Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte [WLM] Dwarf Galaxy
Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte
Named for the three astronomers instrumental in its discovery and identification, Wolf - Lundmark - Melotte (WLM) is a lonely dwarf galaxy. Seen toward the mostly southern constellation Cetus, about 3 million light-years from the Milky Way, it is one of the most remote members of our local galaxy group. In fact, it may never have interacted with any other local group galaxy. Still, telltale pinkish star forming regions and hot, young, bluish stars speckle the isolated island universe. Older, cool yellowish stars fade into the small galaxy's halo, extending about 8,000 light-years across.

Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte [WLM] Dwarf Galaxy
This dwarf galaxy stretches roughly 8,000 light years and is the most remote galaxy in our local group. Astronomers think it may have never interacted with another galaxy. Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte is named after three astronomers crucial to its discovery.
In the wilds of the Local Group, a lonely galaxy stays set apart
This scene, captured by ESO's OmegaCAM on the VLT Survey Telescope, shows a lonely galaxy known as Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte, or WLM for short. Although considered part of our Local Group of dozens of galaxies, WLM stands alone at the group's outer edges as one of its most remote members. In fact, the galaxy is so small and secluded that it may never have interacted with any other Local Group galaxy -- or perhaps even any other galaxy in the history of the Universe.
