Hi, hi, happy Whumpmas in July!!

First and foremost, the whumper that I enjoy is the one that serves the whump situation. A whumper could be written to my exact specifications, but if the rest of the circumstances don't line up and I don't feel the whump, it's kind of all for naught in the whump department (though usually adds a lot in any other regard! :)). So! Assuming I also have a whumpee and scenario that fits, here's the kind of whumper I like:

I'm a big fan of more reserved whumpers. I like whumpers that, if they enjoy the pain and suffering they cause, aren't too gleeful or animated about it. (If they are, it's for show, to make fun of whumpee and/or intimidate whumpee/another character.)

The whumper is composed and the one in control. Not emotionless just not exceedingly emotional.

Some examples are:

Hannibal Lector in Red Dragon (and Silence of the Lambs too but moreso Red Dragon imo; he liked taunting Graham more than Clarice I feel)

Helmut Zemo from CA:CW/FATWS

Grimaud from The Musketeers

The Vulture from Spiderman: Homecoming (a good example of one that doesn't necessarily actively enjoy causing the suffering but is still a whumper and fits the type)

hello chips...... do you have any whump on the brain....... any tropes you've been considering.........

i started watching The Musketeers (very slight spoilers) recently and a trope i really love that they use a lot is a character being wrongfully accused for a crime (literally use it in episode 1 😍)

i really love the sort of hopelessness and helplessness of the accused character in that situation (esp for Athos since he's usually such a composed musketeer and leader; i love seeing him suffer ❤️❤️❤️)

oh man there was a really brief but fabulous scene in a different episode where Athos gets on his knees to beg to the Cardinal (who hates the Musketeers) and AGHJSJSISYHSJAHUGSDHGSGHSKSISAISUUSGANSHAHHSUSGDHDHSJSHAJSDGUH it was so good i need to gif that at some point

here are my answers 3 months later... 😅

😱 - Their biggest fear

Ferris: terrible monotony and inescapable boredom, being stuck, stagnant

Riley: not being able to protect the things/people he loves

😊 - Something that always makes them smile

Ferris: children :) Especially during his time as an accountant, the neighborhood kids in his city would always talk to him and rag on him and ask for pocket change. He thinks they would get along well with some of the children in town.

Riley: baked goods, especially lemon cake like his auntie would make. Reminds him of home back East.

🤝 - Are they good with people? Are they able to get along with people and communicate effectively with the people around them?

Ferris: yes, but not so much. He can hold a decent conversation (or a good one when he wants to) but he's a bit more direct and brutally honest than most people. he's not one for sparing feelings when they really need to know. hes got a lot of dry humor and witty sarcasm which he enjoys using.

Riley: very good, makes people laugh a lot. a friendly conversationalist and good at listening to people. he grew up the second oldest child with quite a few siblings so he has been good at talking to many people of different ages and in different situations.

i like a lot of military whump tropes!

one of my favorites is definitely language barriers. i love when two characters are trying so hard to communicate without the aid of a common language, especially if those people are enemies. i love the frantic hand gestures. i love characters doing their best to appear harmless. i love characters being forced to follow unknown orders in a language they dont understand. i love characters trying to establish a tentative peace with only their actions.

that sort of leads me into one of my other favorite tropes which is enemy caretakers. i made a post about this one. language barriers between a whumpee and an enemy caretaker is one of my absolute favorite things in military whump (A Midnight Clear is a great movie for this)

some other tropes i really love are medic whumpee, shellshock and/or ptsd, and forced labor (Land of Mine is a VERY good movie with this)

I've loved it for as long as I can remember. When I was younger I honestly had no idea that not everyone liked whump. To me it was just a perfectly average thing and I never considered that other people didn't have the same feeling. I just sort of thought it was unspoken and obvious, the way a person willingly watching a movie doesn't have to specify that they like movies because duh they're watching one.

It was literally when I discovered "whump" specifically that it clicked and I was like OH. This is a specific thing I like that not everybody else likes. Huh.

ok you got me—what’s White Collar about and why does it look so interesting. You have me…. Intrigued :)))

cauli i am SO glad u asked

basically the story is about this conman (neal caffrey) who teams up with an fbi agent (peter burke) to solve white collar crimes for the fbi

its a fantastic show, its truly special. there's also quite a bit of whump in it (emotional mostly but plenty of physical and lots of threats; thats the whole reason i started the show in the first place, though i obviously continued because i genuinely loved the show)

theres a lot of mystery and puzzling both in each episode (obviously) but overall as well. and id say its definitely unique in terms of crime shows. a lot different (and better) than the other ones out there.

the characters are funny and entertaining but also grounded and emotional

neal himself is so charming and funny and sarcastic and he's genuinely so skilled and quick on his feet i love him

i also really love the character relationships in the show. you have neal and peter who are awesome and so chaotic and you also have neal and his confriends and then theres peter and his wife elizabeth who are the sweetest couple ever and the rest of the fbi agents who have such fun dynamics with both neal and peter

i just finished the show a few days ago (hence the four hundred reblogs of gifsets on my other blog)

highly recommend this show its fantastic

20. what's the most humiliating thing you could do to your/a whumpee? something that'd really break their spirit

Forced to strip or be naked in general around people is a great one. Especially if it's to show off the whumpee's injuries or scars 😍

Begging is also really nice, and I love when it comes from a character that normally wouldn't do so.

A pattern that I'm also seeing here is that it's much more humiliating to do things with other people around, particularly other whumpers or anyone relishing in whumpee's discomfort. (Or perhaps the opposite, people whumpee respects and doesn't want to see them like that)

It reminds me of a scene from Land of Mine (Under Sandet) where one of the characters is made to bark and act like a dog in front of all his fellow soldiers. The characters' discomfort is palpable.

So I'd say the most humiliating thing would be some combination of dehumanization + forced nudity + begging + exposure to people.

🔍 How you discovered "whump" or the whump community

Honestly, I DONT REMEMBER. I always thought liking whump was completely common, like everyone did it, so I didn't pay much attention to it. I think I learned the term from Pinterest whumpblr screenshots. I had seen a lot of similar hurt/comfort, angsty writeblr prompts and advice (though they never used the term "whump") and that led to the whumpblr ones. I may have also discovered it from AO3 when I came across a whumptober fic. I already knew the term before I created a tumblr. But yeah pretty sure I learned from Pinterest.

👕 A favorite style or item of clothing for whumpee to get whumped in

I enjoy whumpers getting whumped in formal clothing, like suits. Maybe a nice coat depending on the character. I love a loosened tie and no longer tucked button-ups. Wrinkled formal clothes and ruffled hair. An appearance that used to be so clean and put together, now messy and flustered. Very nice visual!
