November 7, 2018 Welcome Mikela! We are beside ourselves excited to welcome Mikela Rigney to our Women’s Program as an instructor and guide.  You will begin to see more of her showing up over the next few months as she gets herself ready for the spring season.  You can read a bit more about her on our guide profile page here. Steelhead are on our brain as we move into the winter season but as we speak many of the rivers for chrome are a bit out of shape with more rain coming.  The Skykomish has a few fish in right now as does the Klickitat and Grande Ronde.  Not a ton of fish but some and there have been some of these magnificent fish looking up for skating flies which is maybe the most exciting way to connect with one.  Watch for flows to drop here shortly and be ready to get on the water! The Yakima River had a slight bump in flow and was tainted with some color from some of its tributaries as a result some of the rain we have received lately.  It is on the drop and the fish are still very active towards BWO’s and smaller streamers on the swing and strip.  We have been spending a ton of time lately exercising our trout spey rods of choice being the Thomas and Thomas DNA 3wt and the Loomis IMX Pro 3wt, both of which are nothing short of a blast to cast and create a very different perspective of this fishery.  Come by and get caught up on the latest. Puget Sound has been having some good and difficult tides.  Super high water forces you to find access where a back cast is possible which is yet another reason the trout spey has been so much fun because the new lines from Scientific Angler and Airflo which are integrated shooting heads make fishing the Sound possible with this set up completely possible.  Salmon are about finished for now which means the SRC’s are super comfortable and curious so this is a great time to be on the water with baitfish patterns.  Our final thought here is as we move into this time of year, when all the rivers are puking chocolate milk which is going to happen, the Sound is just sitting there with clear water and fish waiting for something to do so get to know it NOW. Moy Tung Kung Fu Women's Workshop - RVA Jan 13-15

A Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu workshop for active Moy Tung-lineage women students will be held at his Richmond, VA Main St school, from Friday, January 13 through Sunday, January 15, 2017. Free Women's Self-Defense Seminar - RVA Sat, Jan 14 from 12-3p

The Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy is hosting a free women's self-defense seminar on Saturday, January 14 from 12-3pm. Richmond-area women are encouraged to come and learn authentic Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu martial arts training for self-defense.

I started doing Ving Tsun because I recently became interested in anime, and they're so cool because the characters can fight and defend themselves. I was really weak, too lazy to work out, and I probably would have gotten robbed or kidnapped if someone tried to do so.

I've been doing Ving Tsun (wing chun) Kung Fu for less than 5 months, and I already love it so much. I've learned so much in such a short amount of time. Being a young small female in college, there are a lot of dangers out there, but because of Ving Tsun, I'm not afraid of those dangers the way I used to be.

It has given me power and strength that I never thought I'd have as someone who's only 5' 2” and who doesn't work out. It's cool to feel strong as "the little guy," and Ving Tsun is just really cool in general. I'm so glad I started, and I don't feel like I'll ever stop.

Self-Defense Open House for Women at Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu

The Richmond Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy Women's Program is hosting an open house Saturday, October 22 from 12:30 pm to 4 pm. At 1 pm and 3 pm there will be kung fu demonstrations, followed by brief introductory lessons for interested women. The event will be held in the kung fu school at 1324 W Main St, Richmond, VA 23220 – a few blocks West of VCU, in the heart of the Fan District.

All Richmond-area women are invited to come meet our Women's Program instructors and students, have refreshments, ask questions, view the demonstrations and even learn some Ving Tsun Kung Fu! The Richmond Academy has separate classes for Men, Women, Kids and Teens; this open house is by and for women interested in any of these programs.

I have been training Ving Tsun kung fu at the Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy in Richmond, VA for the last 2 1/2 years. My husband and I joined together when we decided to stop talking about our mutual appreciation for martial arts and decided to take part. I was familiar with the Moy Yat Kung Fu Academy here in Richmond from taking some classes there with my Dad in middle school. Ving Tsun was the style I immediately gravitated towards when I began my search for martial arts schools in the area.

One of the things that initially drew me to Ving Tsun is that it was named for a woman! I've always been really impressed by this part of the style's story and love that by becoming part of the Moy Yat kung fu lineage I felt like I was actively participating in the style's history. I also felt a certain amount of responsibility as a female student, in a male-dominated sport to be thoroughly committed to my training and help to carry on her legacy.

Training in traditional martial arts has benefited in me in many ways - some I did not expect! I spend a lot of time working out, but kung fu challenged me on things like balance, the importance of proper breathing and not always relying on my physical strength to get the job done. The conditioning can be tiring and can target muscle groups and joints in ways that will surprise you - but I personally always walk away with an over-all feeling that I have contributed to a positive in my own life.

I feel safer as a general rule walking to & from places on my own; my senses legitimately feel more keen. I feel more prepared to handle altercations because I have learned not just to fight but to walk away, and how important letting go is. Practicing the forms has also become a great way for me to relieve stress. Hard day at the office? Concentrate on your breathing playing a few forms at your own pace, it's a great way to wind down, re-center yourself & train kung fu at the same time!

Several months back myself and some of the senior & younger women at our school began training separately on Tues/Thu as part of a women's training group. This group focused on movements in kung fu that our sigungs & sifus felt were especially important for women in training/combat situations. We incorporate more varied conditioning to help strengthen problem areas and learn movements specific to our class outside of regular class work.

Not to mention it's been wonderful to bond with other 'warrior women' in our school & program! Over-all, since beginning the women's training my kung fu has become stronger, I have been able to identify & correct problems in my form and have generally just been ENJOYING my training. I hope more women will join us in celebrating their strength and let Ving Tsun become a part of their own fitness routines!
