In 1991 I asked that question. I was a new PV2, our platoon had been task with doing a training event with SF guys training indigenous fighters.

As we are racking out this SF E-7 says "Break out you Woobies and get some sleep." I asked the SFC why he called it a woobie he looked me dead in my eyes and said;

"Because without it you 'would be" cold.", I still sleep with one to this day.

There really is no limit to the abuse and crimes people will forgive a white person for...

if their sob story is framed with the right cinematography, music, character interactions and editing. I wonder if people think they are immune to propaganda, still under the impression that Kylo Ren, Tony Stark and MCU!Wanda Maximoff were redeemed by their stories.  

These people did legitimately fucked up shit that people are ready to forget about completely because of their Tragic Backstory. Yes I know they had a tough time, they still did that shit. (Mass) Murder, Torture, Mind Control, reckless endangerment... the narrative works to justify or minimize these things. 

It bothers me more because this is the exact structure of a cycle of abuse: someone hurts you, denies and gaslights and justifies, then has a breakdown and makes a symbolic sacrifice to convince you they’ve changed... and then they do it again.

And stories prime you to expect a catharis in this situation, to view this cycle as a character arc.That’s just not how abuse works.

I think a lot of writers use redemption as a surprise twist for dramatic purposes, but that inherently makes the redemption more of a twist than an arc. And that makes it easy to fake, in real relationships. Real change takes time, it takes work, it doesn’t come as a last minute reveal. You have to be accountable to everyone you’ve hurt. And that rarely happens in these stories. certainly not to these three examples. It’s all declarations and symbolic gestures, and no willingness to accept or learn from their mistakes. 

This is also how abuse keeps happening in showbusiness and politics: similar techniques are used to excuse bigotry, sexual misconduct and fascism.
