Day 928
One of the weird things about the cozy game genre is that there are games out there that I think, if I had a child, I would give them this game. It doesn’t mean that game is not for me, or wasn’t meant for my demographic, but rather it is the type of game I think I would have enjoyed as a child, could play as a child, and would have been somewhat educational. It would not have been a full edutainment video game, that is a genre of video game that isn’t done very often or very well, but I would have approved of it.
I was thinking about this as I was playing the Woodo demo. Woodo has been a game I’ve been waiting to see more of since the first screenshots of the game was posted a few years back. Primarily because it looks like everything is made out of wooden blocks and you’re playing within a diorama.
The name was a calming narrator who narrates the story of her spending the summer out in the country as a child. And the game is like a reverse hidden object game, where you’re taking objects and placing them into the diorama turning the wood coloured scene into something more colourful and lively as figures come alive. Everything about it, from the script to the narrator to the story is very much a story that I would have read as a child.
I suspect the ‘moral’ of the story is learning how to adapt to a new situation and finding joy in something different. And there’s nothing wrong with that, that is very much a story I would have read as a child. I would have been delighted at seeing the ducks honk at the little fox as I put the scene together back then. In all honesty, now that I’ve said that aloud, I do hope this developer publishes their story as a storybook. I think it would have made a really good one.
