In a tough labor market, workers often have fewer options for job-hopping, and employers can rethink what benefits they offer.
UK Companies ‘Must Offer More to Workers or Face Exodus’
"Companies need to offer higher pay, a shorter working week or enhanced benefits to prevent an exodus of unhappy staff over the next 12 months, research has found. A survey by Autonomy , a thinktank specialising in the future of work, concluded that improving working conditions was vital for sectors suffering from acute labour shortages."
"In the wake of a report suggesting almost one in four workers were considering quitting their jobs in the next few months, the Autonomy poll of more than 1,000 workers in the care, transport and logistics, and hospitality industries showed:
41% were considering leaving their job in the next 12 months.
Low pay, long working hours and poor mental health were often cited as reasons for dissatisfaction.
The majority of those considering quitting had been offered no incentives to stay by their employers.
Workers in these sectors reported that a pay rise, shorter working hours for the same pay and better in-work benefits such as holiday pay and pensions would stop them from resigning."
"UK job vacancies are at a record high, reaching 1.1m in the latest data reported by the Office for National Statistics, and Autonomy said shortages of labour had had a severe impact on business, leading to a loss of clients and income through an inability to deliver services and products."

Legislators reach deal on school building, worker benefits
Florida legislators racing against the clock on Sunday reached important budget deals on everything from school construction to pay raises to state workers. Legislators reach deal on school building, worker benefits
Obama to expand overtime pay for workers.
The Obama administration plans to raise the wages of millions of Americans who work more than 40 hours a week by requiring employers to pay them overtime.
Workers who earn as much as $970 a week would have to be paid overtime even if they’re classified as a manager or professional, based on draft rules described by President Barack Obama in a blog on Huffington Post on Monday.
Many employees now receiving as little as $455 a week, or $23,660 a year -- below the federal poverty line for a family of four -- aren’t entitled to overtime pay because they are classified as managers.
“A hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay,” Obama wrote. “That’s at the heart of what it means to be middle class in America.”
The regulations would take effect in 2016 and extend overtime pay to about 5 million workers, according to Obama. Workers in retail stores and restaurants are among those most likely to be affected.
Obama has been stymied by Republicans in his attempts to get Congress to raise the federal minimum wage at a time when income inequality is emerging as an issue in the 2016 presidential campaign.
The new rules, to be issued by the Labor Department, would be the broadest action by the administration to bolster middle- and lower-income workers, whose wages have stagnated since the recession. Obama is scheduled to discuss the economy during a trip to La Crosse, Wisconsin, on Thursday.
Under the Bush administration’s 2004 rules, exempt executives must supervise at least two employees and management must be their primary duty, though there is no requirement covering the amount of time they spend on management tasks. California state regulations, by contrast, require more than half of an employee’s time be spent on management duties to be exempt from overtime pay.
The rule change has been long anticipated and under attack from Republicans and some business representatives.

Chipotle Will Give Its Employees Paid Sick Leave, Paid Vacation And Tuition Reimbursements
I’ve never eaten at a Chipotle. Not even once. But now that’s going to change. While conservative businesses cut hours to skip out on paying for health insurance and want to deny services to same-sex couples, progressive food chain Chipotle is taking the steps to treat their employees like they do their CEOs: paid sick leave, paid vacation, and tuition reimbursements. Stating July 1, not only…

Enterprises TV and the Sick Day Debate
Some American employees receive paid sick days. Some do not get that same benefit. For those that do not get paid sick days, workers feeling under the weather come in to work. Enterprises TV reviews why giving workers paid sick days is a smart business decision.
Low paying jobs like those in grocery stores, fast food restaurants and the wait industry can be a good way to earn a paycheck. However, they often come with no benefits or very little benefits. One perk which is usually left by the wayside are paid sick days or paid personal days. Employees in these fields that do not feel well, have the flu or a cold, will often come to work. The need to work to get paid is more important than taking a day or two off, without pay, to rest and get well. Now imagine if these workers were offered paid days to stay home and get well.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the worst food-borne illnesses originated from contaminated food handled by sick workers. Enterprises TV learns that while this fact is alarming, food borne illnesses can be prevented if employers, cities, and states created a sound paid sick day policy or created laws which protect workers. When workers from every industry feel they can safely take a sick day or two to get over a bad cold or the flu, without having to sacrifice pay, they will use that time to get well and return to work. This is how paid sick days used to work before employers starting cutting beneficial paid time off. America needs to get back to what it was before.
