Rest in peace, Joseph Rowntree. A Quaker and chocolatier, Rowntree embraced the progressive ideals of the turn of the last century, growing his business from 30 employees to 4,000, at the same time providing them with a library, free education, a works magazine, a social welfare officer, a doctor, a dentist, and one of the world’s first occupational pension schemes. He died on this date in 1925 at the age of 88.
