Today at work #2
An older couple enters the restaurant, shuffling side by side. They stare up at the menu for a while, because the only decision of How Many Damn Chicken Fingers is just too much. Finally they decide and approach me. They order 3 of the largest combo we offer and a single extra finger and a single extra toast.
They tell me exactly where they want this finger and toast to go with their meal.
“Ma’am, the toast and the finger will be placed in a separate box for you” I tell the wife.
That’s not good enough.
Finally they finish ordering and paying. I hand them their cups. The wife drops a cup and picks it up, which I replace for her.
She then hands me a wet wipe to clean my hands because they touched the cup.
“Ma’am,” I say, “I was already about to wash my hands, because it’s protocol.”
The customer will not leave me alone until I accept her wet wipe.
This couple then stands right in front of my counter where I am trying to serve food to others until finally theirs comes out.
They have it for take out (Thank the lord for that) so I bag it following the strict order we do things in. It takes two bags to carry their food, perfectly manageable. But is this couple happy with the way I bagged their food?
Of course not
They stand there in the way of other customers for 5 minutes, which in the fast food industry is a LIFETIME. They won’t let me leave to take other orders because I have to rebag their
Entire meal
For them. I’m the only one up front, so I’m panicking because I have other customers I have to get to so they don’t get mad, but this couple will not leave. Finally I think they’re satisfied and am able to take orders. And then who comes through my line again?
The husband of this couple to order 3 more orders of fries.
Now, I’m sure you can foresee the future as I did in that moment. Sure enough, when the fries come out
They decide they have to rebag their meal again.
When they finally left, I went to the bathroom and cried out of frustration.
