What to wear: Works Christmas Party
The works Christmas party is a great chance to let your hair down and have fun with the workmates you spend every day with. Whilst we all love a party it’s important to remember that you’re still around your colleagues and management so it’s important to make a good impression.
What you’re wearing to the Christmas party is usually the talk of the office for a month or so before the event and with that being said there’s a lot of pressure to look your best. I’ve pulled together some ideas for what you should (and shouldn’t) wear to your Christmas party.
An elegant event
Most of us rarely get the chance to REALLY dress up these days so it can be difficult to know where to start. It’s always important to know your body shape, if you buy something for the look rather fit it could be really unflattering and be a massive mistake. Once you know your body shape and type of dress you’re looking for then that’s where the fun really begins. This season sequins are in fashion and there are tons of different options available. ASOS has hundreds of sequin dresses so no matter what your style (whether you prefer simple or extravagant) they will have something you’ll love. If sequins really aren’t your thing and you fancy something a little different then then you need to head to New Look, they have some seriously quirky dresses in stock and tons of lace dresses too, including some by my favourite dress making underdogs John Zack.
A smart/casual event
So depending on what you’re actually doing for the event (whether it’s an Italian restaurant or drinks at a fancy cocktail bar) depends on the kind of outfit you’re looking for. The best thing to wear in this kind of scenario is something in the middle ground (that's appropriate for either) – not quite your day to day outfit but not too OTT either. A pair of jeans with a nice party top and dressy heels will be the killer ensemble for any kind of meal or drinks, the devil is in the detail. River Island are a brand that does sophisticated fashion (as I call it) so their going out collection has everything you could need to create that dressy (but not overdressed) look. If you are going somewhere a little fancier and you’re unsure on how to dress then you can never go wrong with a little black dress. Always ensure your LBD is appropriately lengthed and not too revealing; if you’re not sure if it’s dressy enough add some fashion jewellery to complete the look.
The Christmas party tends to be one of the biggest events in a company’s social calendar and can also be the source of gossip for months to come. Here’s a few tips on how to survive the night and avoid being the topic of conversation on Monday morning.
Survival tips
- Don’t show too much skin! An extreme plunge top or mini dress won’t be appropriate for any work event and you definitely don’t want a wardrobe malfunction.
- Try to avoid massive high heels, it’s usually wet and icy outside in December and the last thing you want to do is fall over… if it’s not the weather that does it, it could be the G&T’s.
- Following on from my previous point...don’t drink too much!
- Take a coat, Nobody looks good with goose pimples.
- If you’re thinking twice about whether to wear it, leave it at home. You don’t want to feel insecure about your Christmas pudding necklace all night.
- Ensure any fitted clothing you buy has some breathing space and avoid zip up dresses, you don’t want to risk your dress bursting open.
