Today, I am keeping it simple. This is less formal than my usual blog entry but I find it important to get it out.
Sam Altman revealed his plans for WorldCoin and The Orb - a way to verify our humanity in the future.
It was announced a few weeks ago that he was working on a physical product. That was during Meta's announcement on Ray Bans, AR, and VR glasses. People thought it might be something akin to that, or a phone, or something like Humane AI or Rabbit R1.
Turns out it is an iris scanner!
I have so many questions and concerns. But I think that will have to be for a more thoughtful post. For now, I want to say:
Going forward, trust will become a currency. As it is becoming more and more difficult to discern between reality and deepfakes, there need to be ways of verifying who we are.
Does that mean registering our irises in an international, ungoverned database? I don't know if people would be open to that. Personally, it gives me the creeps.
But I will say, it is an important problem that needs to be addressed. I expect to see more innovation on this forefront as opposed to mass adoption.
