Connie Willis and Neil Gaiman at the World Fantasy Convention 2011
I'm really looking forward to attending World Fantasy Con in Brighton at the end of October.
My first international con was WFC Brighton in 2014, and it was so much fun - I met wagon-loads of fantastic new people (some of whom were later partly responsible for my move to Scotland) plus finally got to meet friends I had known only online for over a decade.
So for me, this con feels like a celebration of how long I've been doing this, and all the incredible friends I've made along the way.
I plan to be in full party mode - as much as one can be these days. 😁
Not sure if I'll be on any panels yet but I'm not overly concerned about that - I prefer fewer panels as I get quite bad anxiety about them, before and after. I'm there for the good times.
Oh, and I remembered, just before posting, this will be the first time I have a short story (Godskin) up for a World Fantasy award, so I decided to splash out on the banquet ticket. Haaah, I literally forgot (the chance of it winning is...remote... hence the lack of memory)

I'll be at the World Fantasy Con in Calgary this weekend
Yup, I'll be there, doing a reading, sitting on a panel and signing books. So come on out and say hi. Some heavy hitters will be there including Joe Haldeman and Robert J. Sawyer. I'm privileged to count Rob as a friend; we got to know each other at NorWesCon in Seattle in 2005, and have had a great time chatting ever since. Rob even blurbed my second novel; I greatly admire his work (Calculating God is one of my favourite books) and the stunning intellect behind it. Joe Haldeman I don't know, but I met him ten years ago last summer in Calgary. I'd loved his work since I was a kid. In fact, one of the first novels I ever read (I think I was in Grade 3) was his Planet of Judgement. I read The Forever War when I was in my early 20s (which was a while ago) and loved the mind-screw of time dilation. So it'll be neat to meet him again... last time a fan, this time a pro. E-Town author Gayleen Froese will be there, and I've read her 3-Day Novel and found it excellent. So hey, lots of neat folks and things and such and I'm tired so I don't have anything else to say.
World Fantasy Convention and Bakka Phoenix Launch Roundup
World Fantasy Convention and Bakka Phoenix Launch Roundup
I love going to World Fantasy Con. I made a stop in Saratoga Springs, New York as a part of my book tour. The 2008 WFC in Calgary was my first real convention, and it set a pretty damned high bar. This year’s WFC was fun, but different. My plan was to drive down from Toronto with friends as the convention hotel was hell and gone away from an airport (The ChiZine folks make excellent road trip…

Greetings from World Fantasy Con
Greetings from World Fantasy Con
I’m writing this from my hotel room at World Fantasy Con. Last night I did something crazy and walked back to my hotel at an insane hour- 10:30. Kids, a new sign of age is turning in early at a convention and being oh so happy for just flannel pajamas and tea. The Tor party was fun until it reached critical mass, and I was ready for some fresh air and some Netflix.
I’m seeing some awesome people,…

So World Fantasy Con 2013 happened and I was there
Hello everyone! I am home and knackered, I hope you'll forgive me if lack the energy for a proper convention report. Here, have some highlights instead :)
The Best Things:
Spending time with Mike Carey, whom I haven't seen since last year, and is so kind and and absolutely great fun to be around. He did a reading from his new book The Girl With All the Gifts which will be published in January, and it utterly blew me away, it was so tender and heartbreaking and disturbing, all at the same time. I really hope it's going to be a huge crossover hit. I also got to waffle on at him about Journey into Mystery, which was brilliant :D
Seeing all the fantastic people I know from Twitter and only meet up with at these conventions <3
FREE BOOKS
My name is going to be in the acknowledgements in another book! Mark is so very good to me *hugs him* (Previous book was Lord of Slaughter, the third book in the Wolfsangel series. Loki fans really must read this excellent multiple-centuries spanning Viking saga.)
Feeling immense pride telling industry people I'm with Dave's Comics, and they not only know it, but praise the shop and say what a fantastic reputation it has. I mean really. Just, wow. Have I mentioned how much I adore my shop?
The YA panel with Garth Nix, Holly Black, Sarah Rees Brennan, Frances Hardinge, and Chris Priestly. SO QUOTEABLE.
Mini-planning meetings to discuss Nine Worlds and WorldCon next summer, which I will hopefully be involved with as both industry professional (heheee) and programme organizer, most likely about Fandom and/or Comics. Which should be fun. Or mortifying. ;-)
The Not So Great Things:
I am covered in bruises and blisters, my body is still massively sleep deprived and in pain, and I am definitely getting a case of the dreaded Con Crud. The howling wind and rain this weekend didn't help, but it's pretty much an established fact that you will get ill after a con. Yay.
I made an arse of myself in front of Neil. Twice. It's been several years since we last hung out so I guess I should just be pleased he remembered me, but still. So embarrassing.
I was a lonely, awkward panda for most of the convention, saved occasionally by a few nice people for a little while. But mostly totally awkward and shy, and very lonely.
I think for most people it was an awesome convention, everyone who went had a fantastic time and I'm so pleased to know they had fun. I just wish I could have enjoyed the experience as much as everyone else. But then, I'm anxiety ridden and prone to self-loathing, so I doubt there's much I can do about that. :)
But I digress! I only had my phone to act as a camera, which meant hardly anything came out other than blurry and indistinct, but at least there's a few I can post.
The only photo taken during the con that's actually viewable, probably because I was in the front centre row. The graphic novel panel with Mike Carey (Unwritten, Lucifer, Neverwhere graphic novel, etc), Mike Chinn (Starblazer), Christopher Golden (who probably writes most of your favourite tv tie in books and comics, especially Buffyverse), Joe Hill (Locke and Key, excellent horror novels including the most terrifying book I couldn't finish because oh my god the nightmares which is soon to be a film with DanRad Horns) and some guy named Neil. I think he writes stuff. Occasionally. ;-) Lots of good quotes about writing for comics, and the state of the comics industry today - the general consensus was it's a very exciting time for the medium, and I completely agree.
Mike Carey and his lovely wife/writing partner Linda in my shop. They loved it, which made me feel so warm and fuzzy I could have burst.
Mike signing all the things! You can tell that he's smiling, right? God I need a proper camera.
Have a photo of me making an arse of myself while GNeil laughs my ridiculousness.
Books I bought on the left side, free books on the right (I forgot to include Cursed Among Sequels and The Mammoth Book of Steampunk with the freebies, whoops)
Advanced Reading Copies of books being published next year! Especially excited for my friend Liz's book Banished (look at that cover! So pretty) and The Gospel According to Loki, Joanne Harris' first adult fantasy novel. I also received a matching bag with the gorgeous cover on the other side and a whisky glass from the Tor UK 10th anniversary party. I'm surprised there weren't more alcohol glasses being given away, because let me tell you it was flowing freely all weekend. Just FYI, everything important happens in the bar. ;-)
So yes, that was pretty much my WFC. Next convention is Thought Bubble, the biggest comic event in the UK, where I get to meet some of my favourite creators and hopefully hang out with some awesome people. Woooo :D
Just arrived at World Fantasy Con 2013 in Brighton
This was in the goody bag at reception and I haven't even been to the dealer's rooms yet.
