Qualcomm picks up Palm, truck-load of other mobile patents from HP
Qualcomm has purchased a large batch of patents from HP, raising a number of questions for one company while seemingly wiping the hands for another.
In a press release, the companies said the sale was aimed to "further enhance the strength and diversity of Qualcomm’s Incorporated’s industry-leading mobile patent portfolio."
The portfolio includes roughly 2,400 granted patents and pending applications related to HP’s Palm, IPAQ and Bitfone technologies. Most of those – 1,400 – are from the US, while 1,000 are from other countries.
However, they didn’t spill the beans on how much Qualcomm paid for the IP.
Big plans, maybe
The announcement says most of these patents cover technologies like "fundamental mobile operating system techniques."
There are no clues as to what Qualcomm plans to do with these patents, besides the press release’s vague promise that they "will enable the company to offer even more value to current and future licensees."
Qualcomm has been riding high in recent years, as its Snapdragon brand processors are powering top smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One, and many others.
HP meanwhile has done its darndest to wash itself of Palm. The company sold its operating system, webOS, to LG early last year. There’s no word on how Qualcomm’s purchase will affect LG’s webOS-based Smart TVs, if at all.
According to Recode.net, HP will retain licensing rights to the patents.
We’ve asked Qualcomm to elaborate on its plans for this portfolio and will update this article if we hear back.

Intel goes back to school with Android and Windows 8.1 tablets
Intel has never shied away from supporting education, and now the company has used the BETT education expo in London to unveil its latest pair of ruggedized tablets designed for younger students.
First up, the Classmate PC is a 10.1-inch Windows 8.1 tablet that’s been fitted with rubberised corners to make sure it survives being slung about by rowdy youngsters (ed: well almost).
According to Intel, its rugged design allows it to withstand falls of up to 70cm and the product is both dust and water resistant. It’s all in the name of protecting what lies under the hood, which takes the form of a Bay Trail-based dual-core Celeron N2806 CPU clocked at 1.6GHz.
The Classmate also offers the option for a touchscreen display for the first time alongside a fully rotatable webcam. On the lookout for other potential markets, Intel is gearing up to release the device in Windows 7 and Linux variations later this year.
More rubber = more fun?
Joining the Classmate is the 10-inch Education Tablet, which runs on Android 4.2. Cladded entirely in rubber for easier handling, its other child-friendly features include a power button that apparently ignores accidental presses and comes with a pen-like stylus.
Powered by a dual-core Intel Atom Z2520 at 1.2GHz with hyper-threading technology, it gets a 3D visual boost from Intel’s Graphics Media Accelerator engine that supports 1080p video output. It also features front and rear cameras, optional 3G support and an average 12-hour battery life, according to Intel.
Both models, which are geared toward science lessons through the inclusion of snap-on magnification tools and a temperature sensor, are slated for release later this month.

Apple wins key autocorrect victory in Samsung patent dispute
Samsung and Apple are about to go back to court, and Apple is already coming out ahead in pre-trial proceedings.
Judge Lucy Koh, who’s been dealing with these two companies’ bickering for years, has granted Apple two victories against Samsung as the March trial approaches.
One has to do with an autocorrect patent held by Apple; Judge Koh determined that Samsung’s Android smartphones like the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Note, which use a system that guesses which words users are typing and displays its guesses in real time, do infringe on it.
Samsung will now need to prove that Apple’s patent is invalid in order to win in March.
Autocorrect this
The other blow relates to a Samsung patent for syncing media between devices, which Judge Koh ruled to be invalid.
She reportedly agreed with Apple’s arguments that the Samsung-owned patent added too little to systems that existed before it to be considered valid.
That means Samsung will have only four claims left to fight over when the March trial arrives.
Alternatively, Apple and Samsung might find a solution when they duke it out privately in February, though considering how pointless their settlement talks have been in the past it’s more likely this case will go to trial in March.
One of a kind
It’s also come to light recently that Apple has been insisting that any settlement it reaches with Samsung has to include an anti-cloning provision.
What this means is that Samsung would be prevented from "copying" Apple products in the future.
Considering this years-long battle is at least partially based on Samsung’s assertion that it doesn’t copy Apple products, we’re guessing that hasn’t gone over well with the Korean company.
