Worldbuilding June 2018 Day 1: Sensory Check-In

Hello, followers! Hope you’re ready for another June full of creation and concepts.

As always, check out the official prompt for today!

I love the worldbuilding June prompts, but I often find myself overwhelmed thinking about things on a global (or universal) scale. So this year, I’m going to focus on the little things. The details that may go otherwise forgotten. Simple, short prompts, meant to be answered in a few sentences, but also intended to bring other questions about your world to the surface!

If, by the end of this month, you don’t have a completely fleshed-out world, don’t worry! The blank spaces are fun to fill in as you go, and flexibility makes it so you don’t have to triple check your notes every time you add something to the setting.

Anyway. Without further ado, here’s the prompt for today.

Using all five senses, describe an average adult from your setting. Let the sense details guide you as you elaborate on this individual. If they smell like fish, why? If they look like they don’t get much sun, why? If they have a voice that’s accented in a certain way, why?

Worldbuilding June Day 29: Dear John

Hi builders! We’re almost done!

Today’s official prompt is about communication.

Let’s get personal. Pick one of the individuals you have described in this setting and write a letter from them to one of the following:

a dearest friend

a hated enemy

a long lost love

someone they need help from

a family member

Consider how the letter will be sent - some communications are faster than others, and the content of the letter should reflect whatever method the sender is using.

Worldbuilding June Day 14: Fine Dining

Hey everybody,

I know I said day 13 would be the last late post, but you may have noticed the official prompt for yesterday never came out! So I’m going to go ahead and post my prompt and fill in a link later.

Today, let’s talk about food. Think about what the common cuisine is in your land, and factor in various economic tiers of living that may affect what families have available to them. Are you thinking about it? Good. Let’s get to the prompt.

Write a seasonal menu for a restaurant or tavern in a typical town or city in your world. Include at least three each of appetizers, entrees, desserts, sides, and drinks.

Worldbuilding June Day 20: Arm Up!

Hey, friends!

Today’s official prompt is about weapons and armor in your world.

Let’s consider how widespread weapons are in your setting. Does every household have one? How expensive are they? Today, write a brief description of three sets of weapons and armor: one for the richest and most powerful person in your setting, one for someone who has never seen battle but knows how to use their weapon, and one for someone who has had to fight for survival. These descriptions can be brief, and it’s possible that one or more of these people doesn’t have a weapon, or their weapon is their hands. Take into account their differences!

Worldbuilding June Day 24: Guinness, or Someone Like Him

Hi all!

Today’s prompt is about unexplored places.

I want to branch off of this prompt a little and talk about unexplored feats. Who are the world-record holders in your world, and what kinds of records are they setting and breaking? For this challenge, choose three of the following:

a world record involving physical prowess

a world record involving mental prowess

a world record involving endurance

a world record involving appearance or body modification

a world record involving mundane travel

a world recording involving magic

a world record involving an amount of items collected

Detail when the record was initially set, who holds it now, and the statistics that go with that. If you like, consider new contenders who are trying for world records!

Worldbuilding June Day 19: World-Shaping Conflicts

Hey there everybody!

Today’s official prompt is about war in your world.

Rather than focusing on methods or militaries, let’s talk history. Make a brief list of significant wars in your setting, along with a one sentence description of what the war was fought over.

Worldbuilding June Day 15: Legalities

Hey everybody! We’re all caught up!

I’ll add in the link to the official prompt later.

Today, let’s talk about the ruling structure of your world - in a small snapshot, of course. Think about laws - written or unwritten - that exist in your world. Consider why they exist, what the punishment for violating them is, and if there are any exceptions to the rule. Think about who enforces them, whether or not they might change, and how long the law has been in place.

Pick one of the following:

the most important law in a given society

a silly, outdated law

a controversial law

a recently implemented law

Write the law itself, the punishment for violation, and write why the law exists. Keep in mind that some laws are more like unspoken tradition or taboos - it doesn’t have to be law as we know it.

Hi everybody!

Today’s official prompt is about jobs and work in your setting.

Let’s talk about specific professions today. Think about whether people own their own businesses, work for others, pick up whatever work they can, etc. Pick on of the following:

the most valuable job in your setting

the most reviled job in your setting

the most sought-after job in your setting

the most dangerous job in your setting

Write a brief description of this job as though you’re hiring someone for it. Include the average hours spent working each week, the typical duties, and salary and benefits.
