So. I'm here to officially announce hiatus-- not like that wasn't what's pretty much happening before I said so. I haven't been in a good RPing mood in a week or two, and it just isn't fun, trying to force replies. So I won't be on Tumblr in the near future-- not even lurking-- in an attempt to get me off my lazy ass and focus. On things with a more tangible output, which I could be doing this summer. I apologize to all of you, especially the few who are actually waiting for a reply from me. I will be back May, at the latest. Thank you.
Luka has been through an extreme headcanon overhaul or two while I was inactive. So yeah the headcanon page is really outdated. And I don't know when I'll be able to get back on the computer to fix it. So yeah.
To clarify, especially as I'd been using this tidbit more and more in recent RP's, this is how the child-raising system of Luka's place works, and a lot more on general history as well.
I may edit this post in the future to reflect recent timeline developments.
So, the setting of this thing is in a post-apocalyptic city-state. After a war or several, much of the world was bombed town to bare ground, and the use of biological weapons had made travel inadvisable, had it been possible-- a messenger could pick up deadly pathogens, and the technology required for mobile communications had mostly been seized by each country's respective governments.
Humanity huddled together in little, isolated communities, scattered across the globe.
A few centuries later, we see the rise of a city from the ashes of the past. Over time, the inhabitants had rebuilt what they could from the past, though much had been lost and gone forever. They had begun to venture out and expand, though no other sign of human presence has been detected in the vicinity.
Now, they have reached stability, and technologically speaking, are in an excellent spot to begin growing and developing on their own path-- that is, if they can overcome their inner political turmoil.
Biological warfare and much previous tinkering with genetics (to produce, among other things, naturally blue, pink, and green hair) had rendered much of the population infertile. This forced the people to adopt a new system that would maximize their birthrate.
Fertile women would be paid a stipend to carry and birth a child, and fertile men would be paid for each verified viable sperm donation.
Originally, the mothers had the right to keep or give up their children for adoption, but as time passed, this was considered unwieldy, and eventually all children born were raised at a community home.
Now: the setup is this.
With no blood relative to pass worldly wealth onto after one's death (and few friendships were close enough for that), this system was setup.
At a certain age, one may adopt a child from the community home-- the arrangement is based on mutual agreement-- and train him or her as an apprentice of sorts, someone to continue the legacy. Living arrangements depended upon the agreement-- some took it as a sort of day job, others were more immersive.
It works well. Sort of.
More details on a child's life will come later, though that's less relevant to Luka and more to Len.
Let's just say that the societal pressure is immense.
