Bruce Banner is this twitching, skinny guy and the kid needs help, Tony decides, and not with the chemistry; he's the classic nerdy loner type with big eyes whenever he's spoken to like he's surprised it's even happening, so Tony will help him out, be his friend. Tony's nice like that, and anyway Rhodey, fuck him, refused to take chem this year because being Tony's lab partner was not helping his grade, or something. 

Before long, though, Rhodey is lamenting the fact that now he has two science geek friends, not one; Tony slaps him on the back and says "Guess you regret not taking chem now, huh," and Rhodey shrugs him off, and Bruce grins like quicksilver, ducking his head. 

But it's not until Tony is shaking his way through a panic attack in an empty bathroom with Bruce's hand on his back; not until Bruce whispers "I get them too," not until Tony finds his hand moving to take Bruce's pulse for when he forgets about it, to make sure he's okay -- he has to be okay -- that he figures out it wasn't much about being nice and more about grabbing onto something and not letting go, because Tony is selfish, hey, no one's ever said otherwise.
