The guards of Stormwind are some of the hardest working members of the military. Not only do they combat the external threats attempting to enter our city, but they also face the internal dangers: criminals, killers, and madmen who threaten us. No other unit is more diligent than that of the Patrollers, lead by Knight-Champion Robelin Greatheart.
Communication with the guards is imperative. Often, members of the guard are aware of bigger issues that the average citizen might not know or take into account. Ongoing risks to public health, safety, and more are within the guard’s perview. When civilians take matters into their own hands, acting on behalf of the guard who have legal jurisdiction, it can lead to unnecessary conflict, arrests, and even death.
The Royal Courier reached out to Knight-Champion Greatheart for his input on local affairs.
The Knight-Champion had four simple requests for those calling upon his unit:
Bring in the guard when local conflicts occur, rather than taking it upon yourself to solve.
Individuals should be aware of local laws and respect them.
Forward reports of misdemeanors and other crimes to the guard for follow up.
If a conflict occurs, please stay on site and comply with any requests by the guards. Do not interfere unless asked to by a guard.
Following these guidelines will help build a better and safer Stormwind.
(The Stormwind City Patroller is a guild actively roleplaying as one unit of the City Guard. Interaction is not mandatory. They merely wish to provide more than an NPC guard to roleplay with if desired.
We spoke with the Guild Master, Greatheart’s writer, and here are the things he wanted people who choose to interact with the guild to hear:
“Well to start, communication, especially in large public role play, is key. A good way for people to stay in touch with us, and to easily contact us, is through our community discord and in-game Community. (All found here)
-As guards, we face the challenge of having to respond to multiple people within a reasonable time constraint. A great way to help us make things go smoothly is to be patient. If your post becomes buried, simply and politely ask the responder if they need a repost.
-Our guard guild operates on a consent basis; we aren't here to ruin anyone's RP. If people aren't wishing to interact with the guard, just politely tell us and we'll happily leave. What we don't want is people saying yes to guard-RP and then taking ooc bitterness into ic interactions.
-We enforce Purple Monday's Moonguard-Laws. One such issue that occurs frequently in guard RP is that people forget that Azeroth is not America or insert 1st world nation here. Simple human rights are rather few. Unfortunately, Blizzard has only mentioned a few canonical laws of Stormwind. So when people consent to RP, we expect them to also agree to the Purple Monday laws. A great way to be informed and ready for guard RP is to have read through the Stormwind laws RP documents.
-Above all else, just keep ooc communication polite. We are all real people and we all come onto this game to have a good time together with the community.
-All members of the SCP are required to be respectful oocly and if everyone else did the same, we'd appreciate it!”

Deep in the northern lands known as the Plaguelands, a group works meticulously to see the corruption purged from every blade of grass, every rock, every tree, and every creature. They work tirelessly to restore the pride and good name those wearing the Scarlet tabard once held. The Scarlet Conclave is a unit of holy warriors dedicated to restoring the lands of the North.
The apprehension, I felt as I walked toward the group standing at attention in the center of their base of operations can not be denied. However, by the end of my time with them, I believe these stalwart men and women follow their leader and work everyday to fulfil their desires to improve Azeroth. Misconceptions about who they are and what they do, prompted the decision to interview the members of the Scarlet Conclave. My worries and fears were laid to rest as I got to know these dedicated holy people.
Led by Highlord Crowley Thoranis, the Scarlet Conclave was formed after breaking from the traitorous Scarlet Crusade. Since that time, their mission has been one of protection and restoration.
On the day I visited, eleven members -- Evistara Turner, Marshal Tiberius O'Sullivan, Lorathyr Duskveil, Highlord Crowley Thoranis, Highlady Eirdwen Thoranis, Viglundur, Charles Schacktorn, Baryn Silveraxe, Chaniste Skyguard, and Kael’thallas Nightdweller -- presented themselves to welcome me and share their histories, beliefs, and dedication to their cause.
The history of the Scarlet Crusade is one fraught with good intentions turned bad. The Scarlet Conclave is diligently trying to overcome the problematic past with their good actions and positive attitudes. Highlord Thoranis stated earnestly, “The Crusade started with good intent, to save the people of Lordaeron, and to eradicate the vile Scourge that infest it! And it did work, to some effect, to save some and to destroy undeath. I think it would be a shame to leave Alexandro's legacy in the mud because of what his successors did.”
Commander Lorathyr Duskveil added, “The Crusade was a good organization corrupted by evil and ignorance. We are not. We fight for justice and the Light, not our own prejudices.”
The group was earnest in their desire to discard the negative stereotypes. All of them agreed the idea that anyone wearing the Scarlet tabard is automatically out to murder you is one such misconception that needs to be changed.
Kael’thallas Nightdweller stated, “We aren't a walking talking time bomb, if you meet us in the city or outside of, we aren't going to just murder you. We are people too, and we have feelings that allow us to make friends, connect to people, and understand where they are coming from."
Commander Duskveil added, “The racism and xenophobia of the Crusade is, quite simply, a lie. Look at me, ears long and eyes ablaze, and I'm not persecuted. I'm treated as a brother in arms.”
"Scarlets are more than just humans. I mean even here... we have Dwarves, Elves, half breeds. It's frustrating to be called a racist when that's far from the truth," Mr. Charles Schacktorn shared.
Even the Highlady Eirdwen Thoranis contributed to the misconceptions they would like to be rid of, "We are not racists, or bigoted murderers out for blood at all times. We welcome other races of the Grand Alliance with open arms and have no quarrel with the others so long as they do not abuse us. Light above! If I ever heard that one of my Crusaders had murdered an innocent I would be beyond furious."
From priestesses to fighters the members of The Scarlet Conclave all believe in the mission they share. While coming from various backgrounds, they all agreed serving with each other is one of the benefits and they have found a home within the group.
Evistara Turner, "I was born in Andorhal and I have spent my life as a Priestess serving and healing others in the Alliance since I was forced to leave. I joined because we are working on restoring this land and working towards something I believe in."
Marshal Tiberius O'Sullivan, “Well, my introduction to the order was an interesting one. The short version of it was that I was extremely sick, on my deathbed when I found the Highlord and they cured me. On that day I swore allegiance to the Highlord and the Scarlet Conclave."
Commander Duskveil, “I was little more than a skeleton wandering the Plaguelands when I came upon the Highlord some months ago. It had been years since I felt purpose, the Light itself, even the will to live. The Conclave saved me from a certain death, and for that I will serve to the end of my days.”
Highlord Thoranis, "I was one of a few founding members of this Conclave. Myself and one, who is not with us now, Gerard Crawford, deserted the Crusade as it was led by Whitemane, fleeing southwards to Stormwind, where, upon arrival, we formed our group and sought to redeem the Ashbringer's legacy."
Highlady Eirdwen Thoranis, “I was raised in the Crusade. My father joined soon after it was founded, and I spent the vast majority of my life in New Avalon. My mother and I fled to Tyr's Hand after the massacre, then I went on to Light's Hope. They directed me to Stormwind and I met Cr- Highlord Thoranis about two years ago in the graveyard memorial on a dark night..."
Viglundur, "I have not been vith the Conclave for very long. Vhat brought me into the service of the Highlord vas the promise of glory in battle to bring back to my home in the north."
Charles Schacktorn, "My rejoining more formally with the Scarlets was a relatively recent happening. Roughly a month and a half ago. I was... a lost sheep of the herd and had to return to what was once my brotherhood. I was a member of the Crusade itself early in its birth."
Baryn Silveraxe, "When I was takin' a break from me adventurin' I met Gerard n' Crowley, we talked about our mutual interests 'n what not... and, I ended up workin' for 'em. Ah don't regret it one bit!”
Some might question anything related to the former Scarlet Crusade as being too zealous and too radical, however, the members of the Scarlet Conclave were the opposite of the frenzied zealotry the Crusade was known for. Instead as Highlord Thoranis put it, “Our zeal is directed to the Horde, the Scourge, the Forsaken, and any rogue undead. Innocents are to be protected, and a crazed mind blocks fair judgement!” The sentiment was met with nods all around as the group shared some of what they each do to protect innocents and purge the land of any remaining traces of the Scourge.
While not your typical military organization, the Scarlet Conclave is one ready to take up arms to defend when called upon. Their mission is one of protection and providing “a haven for civilians in the face of war, to eradicate undeath, and to secure a sphere of influence in our homelands” as the Highlord stated earnestly.
Joining the ranks is accomplished through conversation with the Highlord or one of his officers. Skills and faith are not a mandatory requirement, but they do help. If there was one negative I could point out about the organization it would be their steadfast determination to keep the Conclave free of Worgen curse and Undeath, but this seems another aspect of their desire to protect coming through. With these two exceptions, the group seemed welcoming and accepting of those with or without faith to their order. When prompted on their current recruitment needs, those with healing capabilities were considered the highest priority to fill their ranks.
For the past two years, the Scarlet Conclave has been working diligently to protect and serve the Alliance. Their deeds a far cry from the hateful acts of the Scarlet Crusade. Through grit and determination, the Scarlet Conclave will break the stereotype of their predecessor and show the world how it should have been all along.
(OOC: The Scarlet Conclave was created by Crowley and a few friends to break the stereotype of the racist and hateful roleplayers typically associated with Scarlet RP. The group is friendly and welcoming to all on an OOC basis. Each of the members present attested to their comfort and how Crowley has created a fun, friendly and safe atmosphere for his guild members.
Evistara Turner: I was connected through Tiberius and I love rp and this guild has been one of the best I have been in. The people in the guild, the rp, everything is great!
Tiberius O'Sullivan: I've always been interested in Scarlet Crusade lore, what it was about and who was involved. When I came upon the Scarlet Conclave they were basically everything good that came from the Crusade, the way it was when The Ashbringer was around.
Lorathyr Duskveil: I had met Crowley through the WRA discord and befriended him over our love of history. I had never actually RP'd a scarlet before, so I jumped on the opportunity to try something new. Been loving it ever since.
Highlord Crowley Thoranis: Me and Gerard leveled up and formed the guild on 3-20-17, and decided to run it as more than a guild for friends.
Highlady Eirdwen Thoranis: I played a forsaken and DK as mains for YEARS and loved the Scarlet lore. I needed a villain for another plot and I made Eerie. My partner had a hard drive fry, so I just joined up with some random freak advertising in Elwynn. That was Crow, soon after the guild was made. Eirdwen grew and I just fell in love. Baryn and I were two of the earliest inductees <3
Viglundur: I have been with the Guild for about two weeks now, and they have been great. I was looking for a place where a character would fit in a Housecarl role, and they allowed me to do so. So far, all I can say is that it's a great place with great people.
Charles Schacktorn: I was looking for some Scarlets for awhile and happened to run across the recruitment drive in Stormwind awhile back, and jumped at the chance. Much more level headed than some of the guilds I'd been in previously.
Baryn Silveraxe: I was a close friend of the founding members of the guild, they pretty much brought me into wow rp and taught me the ropes.
As a Heavy RP guild with a casual RP night every week, The Scarlet Conclave considers itself a religious paramilitary guild with a focus on historical accuracy. The types of individuals they are looking to join their RP are those who RP faithful types. “Military or not, you can be a simple civilian and you'll still be able to play a major part in the guild. We're also looking for mercenaries, even if non-faithful!” Crôwlêy indicated when asked about the type of individuals they were looking to recruit.
The Scarlet Conclave does have a strict policy on the classes and races they will bring in to the guild ICly. Races: Human/Kul Tiran, Dwarf and High Elf, (can be a human or void elf for proxy.) Classes: Paladins, Priests, Warriors, Mages, Hunters, Rogues and Monks.
“Our policy on allies, however, is much more lax. We'll ally with anyone willing to fight the Horde and Scourge.” Crôwlêy added.
From an RP experience level, the guild is ready and willing to teach anyone the ropes around RP, any level and any skill set when it comes to the individual behind the character.
To join, there is an IC and OOC interview required but no formal application is needed. Contact Crôwlêy in game to inquire about how you can be a part of The Scarlet Conclave.
I wish to thank the members of The Scarlet Conclave and Crôwlêy for allowing me to interview them and I hope that those of you reading have a better idea of who they are and what they stand for in their RP. A more friendly bunch of Scarlets could not be found!)
Rumors of a construction project north of Stormwind reached the city recently. Speculation abounded on the purpose and the Elves behind the endeavor. I took the opportunity to reach out to the project leader, Jecarde Indo’shar, to clear the air and get to the truth behind the gossip. The city of Caras De’Avalorn is meant to be a neutral one. The idea is to create a city for those displaced, wishing to find a safe haven that feels like home. Both Mr. Indo’shar and Miss Thalryn were eager to speak of the endeavor.
We met at the Royal Courier offices. Upon first impression Jecarde Indo’shar presents himself as a well dressed, well spoken Ren’dorei. His fiance, Cassiele Thalryn, another distinguished looking Ren’dorei, joined the interview, deferring to Jecarde for most questions. Her expertise did come into play around questions of immigration.
Q: What does Caras De'Avalorn mean?
Jecarde: "It means Mountain Ridge of the Avalorn, the Avalorn being the large plot of land that was procured just north of Stormwind. It is completely surrounded by mountains and the only way in or out is by sea or a very subtle passage that leads to the forests just outside of Stormwind city's northern wall."
Q: What is the ultimate vision behind this?
Jecarde: "We feel that, especially given the fact that the Quel'dorei, Ren'dorei, and Kaldorei no longer have a home, it would be of paramount importance to provide a land that we can call our own. What's more, Elves have either been at each other's throats or non-existent in the world theater's stage and I believe now is a good time to bring us all together under one banner in the name of unity and execute the wisdom that we are rumored to have. Lead by example, for the sake of peace. If we prove that it -can- be done then more would likely be willing to give it a shot. At least in theory."
Q: With your proximity to Stormwind, do you worry about your neutrality being called into question? What precautions are you taking to maintain neutrality?
Jecarde: "There will be no standing armies within the realm of Caras De'Avalorn. We will have our peace keepers to make sure that laws are adhered to, but they would hardly be numerous enough to call themselves an army. Should Caras De'Avalorn come under attack, it would be the citizen's responsibility and privilege to take up arms and defend their home."
Cassiele: “Caras De'Avalorn is secluded within the inlet just north of Stormwind with only a single passage made available to Elves beneath the Alliance banners. Those who are neutral or unfortunately still tied to the Horde can only access the Harbors of Caras De'Avalorn by passenger vessel to which they must provide their passport card to even board and then check in with the Harbor Master.”
Q: What of those elves who do hold allegiance to one faction or the other? Are they unwelcome? And what of other races?
Cassiele: "Like you or I, we will always have a sense of home in our hearts. Caras De'Avalorn is to be considered neutral territory. Passport cards are available for both residents and guests alike and must be kept on your person at all times in the event the Champion requests his men set up a checkpoint. Other races are permitted though mainly as guest. Should a non-Elvish individual wish to acquire residency it would be considered under heavy regard and only for special circumstances. Something along the lines of a bi-racial couple looking to put down roots, or a descendent of an Elven race."
Q: What does it take to get one of these passports? How does one gain a passport to visit?
Cassiele: “In order to obtain a passport card one must meet with me to file the necessary documents and have a photograph taken. Currently with Caras De'Avalorn under construction, the best place to meet with me would be courtyard of the Keep. Once construction is complete, we'll open a Registrar's office and be able to create and maintain records there.”
Jecarde: "We plan to integrate a thorough vetting process to make sure that those who would bring harm to our goals or community will not be permitted entry."
Q: What about citizenship? Once you take up residence are you considered a citizen or is there more to it?
Cassiele: “Citizenship of Caras De'Avalorn will only be reserved for Elves, Residency is more for special circumstances. Either of which can be revoked for illegal activities that are against the laws and ethics of the Kingdom.”
Q: What safeguards and laws are in place to attempt to keep that peace you strive for?
Jecarde: "Once people are accepted into Caras De'Avalorn they enter into a contractual agreement with the kingdom. They will adhere to this contract or will be expelled and banished for treason. Some of the laws in this contract are, for example, one resident cannot extort another. That one is part of a set of laws that will be impossible to repeal or alter, even by the high council, and are set in stone. Other laws specifying acts of violence will be implemented prior to the opening of the kingdom."
Q: What is that leadership structure like? Who selects the High Council?
Jecarde: "There are two tiers to leadership within the kingdom. The Curators will hold town hall meetings for the various Houses they represent and they will submit their information to the High Council, who would be responsible for voting any laws into effect, amending current laws, changing policies, so on and so forth. The original High council will be formed primarily by founders of Caras De'Avalorn, though any future members will be voted in by the council itself.
Cassiele: “Ideally these positions are voted in, however Jecarde here will reside as Arbiter, a mediation position to ensure meetings and affairs run efficiently.”
Q: When do you anticipate the city to be ready for habitation?
Jecarde: “We will be having our opening gala next month, actually.”
Q: What else would you like people to know about the community?
Cassiele: “We're just looking for a peaceful home that caters to our ancestors and kin. That's all. There are no ulterior motives here.”
The meeting shed light on the project, the mission, and vision Mr. Indo’shar has for the new community. With the first citizens expected to take up residence in early April, as most of the construction completes, Caras De’Avalon promises to be a neutral haven for all elves.
(In addition to the in character questions, both the players behind Jecarde and Cassiele were happy to answer some OOC questions to help clarify the project.
If someone wants to get involved what are the steps?
Jecarde: Basically contact myself or Cassiele (@jecarde or @cassielethalryn or the Contact Us link on @cda-wra)
The Discord is set up to create the “setting” but you do intend for people to RP in game as well as in the Discord channels, right? And is there a storyline to get involved in?
Jecarde: Right. We're essentially creating, with some of our own stories to guide things along, a space where other like-minded storytellers can execute their own storylines. All stories, besides some of our own, will be community-sourced.
Cassiele: We're essentially trying to establish a virtual city within the game. By blending Suramar and Silvermoon with a hint of Teldrassil. There will be people who actually rp out of CDA via discord, vendors and the like. The Community isn't a guild and thus doesn't provide direct stories. The Community is more of an IC backdrop for your character should you wish to live there.
Some have compared this to the HON, tell me why, in your own words, it's not that?
Cassiele: CDA has zero voice in Stormwind, the actions of any involved do not interfere or interject in anyone's role play but those who wish to take part. It is race centric, has common sense guidelines in order to maintain communication across and above board. It essentially has nothing to do with Stormwind, it's culture, laws, or ruling body. It's also not just nobles.
The Community theoretically governs itself through the ic positions and curators. Jecarde wanted to make a Ren'dorei only guild, but then opened it to all Elven races. Then he was encouraged to open it cross faction because of the tongues elixir. It was born into a community.
Jecarde: And for the record, I had nothing to do with the HON.
What is one thing you would like to share OOCly about the community?
Jecarde: Visit the CDA tumblr, read this post, and if you still have questions about how, who, where, or what; use the Contact Us link and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.
The Royal Courier thanks @jecarde and @cassielethalryn for the opportunity to interview them on their project. If you’re interested in joining, visit @cda-wra and reach out to them!)
Set on a natural harbor along the northern coast of the Eastern Kingdoms, Dreary Bay Township has become home to a diverse group of individuals. Originally founded by Gilnean’s fleeing their homeland, the township has grown over the last several years to the small bustling harbor town it is today. The Royal Courier spent some time with the Mayor and several of its citizen’s recently to find out what makes Dreary Bay not so dreary.
The collection of individuals met all had come from different locations, but now proudly call Dreary Bay home. From those trying to feel closer to home to those who were just looking for a friendly place to hang their hats, the people of Dreary Bay are a friendly and welcoming group with a strong sense of pride in what they have accomplished together. Fighting off ferals, a necromancer, and even traitors in their midst, the people of Dreary Bay have faced each trial together.
The Mayor of Dreary Bay Township Khallidan Vandenberg runs a town built upon helping others, even opening his own home when needed. “I stayed here to build a new community of friendly neighbors that helped on another, a place they can stay where they feel needed and cared for.” And the others echoed this camaraderie and spirit of welcome.
Still growing, the township has need of able bodies who are used to hard work followed by good times with friends. Guard Captain Bairidict shared the townships needs for both people and supplies, “Grains and livestock is what we could use more of as far as resources go. More manpower for our guard is crucial. Our people should not have to be afraid of leaving their homes."
Two of the residents, we had the pleasure of meeting, indicated they had intended to pass through, but ended up staying because of the friendliness and openness of the town’s residents. “I'm staying because of the hospitality and privacy,” indicated a Mr. Fizzlespark who had recently moved in to town.
And a Pandaren woman who had been investigating spirits around the Kingdom ended up staying to help with the task of taming the wild land around the town, “I cannot think of nicer folks to live with while such a task is underway.”
A home to many, a beacon of friendship and working together, Dreary Bay Township is a safe harbor in a stormy climate. Anything but dreary, the people will make you feel right at home in their refuge on the coast.
(OOC: Dreary Bay Township is a guild founded by two friends who wanted to bring a D&D event style to a town RP setting. Basing out of Keel Harbor in Gilneas, the two host weekly events and welcome all to come stay awhile, enjoy the camadarie, and partake of an adventure or two. An OOC interview is part of the onboarding to the guild, but other than that they welcome any and all who wish to try out a little different type of RP away from the city. Welcoming of beginners and more seasoned individuals, they will take you through their D&D rulesets for events. Stop by on a Friday or Sunday evening or whisper Kallidan, Bairidict, or Rizzele in game for more information!)
Associations of Azeroth: Harboson Company, Investing in Others for Success
By Risri Elthron
Tucked into a corner on the canal side of the Trade District is the Medical Supply store “The Vital Spice” owned and operated by Harboson Company. The Royal Courier spent some time with the owner Elstine Harboson and members of his organization to learn more about the growing business that is looking to aid with economic growth throughout the Alliance.
Entering The Vital Spice, one can see the meticulous care and detail put into organizing and maintaining the medical supply shop. The store itself is covered in plants hanging from the ceiling in various stages of the drying process - the air being influenced by the sage, mint, thyme, basil, and dozens of other herbs and flowers. The counter wielding small boxes, opened to reveal different quality bandages and medical supplies. Operated by three of Harboson Company’s employees, the store open on Saturday evenings selling and taking orders for supplies from individuals and other organizations.
Employing approximately twenty-five individuals, Harboson Company is more than just the proprietor of a shop. The company is a legal fighting force for hire, contracting out to any who wish the support of their elite team. In addition to the contract work, Harboson Company is an investment and trading organization. They look for business opportunities to help support and grow the Alliance economy. Owner Elstine Harboson detailed their interest in investment as looking for opportunities to support new or struggling businesses. “Someone that is just interested in owning their own business, or just wants to sell products. We're very liberal and freeing; our newest client for example only provides us with ten percent of their income and some various trading restrictions when and where necessary; otherwise the store is theirs and we just help promote them and better their business.”
The well-structured family-owned company has both a merchant and soldier branch, with individuals encouraged to develop in their own skills and follow the path suited best for their interests. “The Soldiering Branch is fairly standard, a Bloodsworn acts as a General of sorts, below that is the Captains of a squad, and within that squad are members of the professional paid soldiers. -- On the other spectrum we have the Viceroy who's one simple purpose is to keep the coin flowing and expanding. Below that we have the store owners, merchants, entrepreneurs and so forth - then their employees,” Harboson explained.
Moving up within the organization is based on merit, as Mr. Harboson explained, “We promote based on ambition and willingness to better oneself, learn, and of course lead. Everyone we have in a leadership position has been with us for a long time and served in the field - battlefield or otherwise. I can't say we really have a checklist; it's more we present the need for 'blank' position to be filled and see who steps up; we don't hold hands.”
The individuals best suited to working with the company are those who are not only hard workers but also, as Mr. Harboson described “ambitious, curious - rather than loyal, and dormant. Our end goal is to create leaders that in turn expand the business - we do well when our employees do well. So they need to have a desire to grow and better themselves, really just that burning passion to be something more.”
New employees are given a trial period to find their way within the organization. Once the trial is successfully passed, the individual is given the Harboson Contract to cement their employment within the organization, “The contract is there in favor of the employee rather than the employer; we provided monthly pay, plus a signing bonus to last you to the first pay check. Training for the work place was given for free, health insurance to pay for any medical bills within reason and that happened in service, and then of course life insurance that provided a severance pay to your family should the worse come. As we've grown and adapted into much more than just a Company that works primarily with professional mercenaries however, we've looked recently to editing the contract with updated terms.”
Joining in the discussion were Elstine’s wife Scassira, Varro Balisteri and Jarisleif, members of the Soldiering branch, and Ms. Caeliam Flamboisia. Each of the members described an organization that was professional, yet full of camaraderie that gives each of them a sense of purpose larger than themselves.
Scassira shared her thoughts on the organization, “Best, I would say is the way we do approach the other organizations such as the Guard or the like. Offering donations of product, securing business trades and deals. Ensuring our military is supplied and well nourished with medicinal items. It is a feel-good thing, I would say. As for worst, the chaos that can accompany such things as securing those deals. That includes many meetings and a long paper trail, but none of which cannot be managed. Simply tedious work, you see."
Caeliam Flamboisia who joined the company in late January spoke of her role and her thoughts in a kind voice that reiterated her words, “I help the other when they need help of a mage for anything... and because I did want to be stronger for everyone. The best part is to work with a nice company, I must say that we do have many good person here and kind people.”
Jarisleif, another longer term member and main herald for the shop, complained good-naturedly about the lack of permission to swear but that it was made up for in his opportunities to bash heads when an employee was in trouble, “ I usually just clobber things and yell in the streets to keep people coming in the shop. Best part is that Employees always get in trouble somehow so you always have an excuse to fight. Worst part is that I cannot swear whenever I want.”
Varro Balisteri, a new member, shared his specialty and his thoughts on being a part of the company, “I have a heavy hammer that tends to land on the heads of those that disrupt business ordeals. I am looking forward to my signing-on bonus. The worst bits would be...we have an -awful- time 'camping.'”
While not all the employees were available, the sense of the spirit of the organization could be felt in the room as we spoke for more than an hour. A strong proponent of working hard and achieving your potential, Harboson Company is an organization serving all of the Alliance with integrity and honor. Stop by the shop next Wednesday evening for your medical supply needs and if you’re interested in a job, speak with one of the employees for your opportunity!
(OOC: The group is focused on realistic roleplay. A lore friendly, and heavy roleplay guild, Harboson Company does not discriminate on roleplay experience. Elstine expressed his passion for helping new roleplayers “I also really want to stress a huge passion of mine is working with new RPers; so you don't necessarily have to be highly skilled to join; I've also taught several ESL folks, like Deccius the Brazilian; and of course. I've helped Cae out a little too - she's French, but I've dozens of RP students, a few in the guild with us.”
Caeliam a non-native English speaker reiterated that love of the guild and its guild leader, “El is a really good teacher and I have improve a lot with him helping me!”
Elstine shared what he looks for with new members “I'm very particular with my members; we do very extensive interviews OOCly - personally I think it's way more important to have decent people OOCly than anything else. We want a family in guild, we wall want to be close, and to have a good time - and I think we have that, especially now. I think we're all really inclusive, open-minded, but also willing to work; a guild is a lot of work especially a decent one - it can't be a free ride for everyone. Some things have to be done. In short: patient, ambitious/self-starter, eager, friendly, not vindictive/egotistical.”
Varro added, “I think the major attraction to this guild is the change of pace it provides from the typical 'mercenary' guild.”
Elstine was thoughtful about the type of roleplay that is important to him, “I think it's important, and I try to stress it a lot that a lot of people can take it as... Elitism with our style of RP; and to a degree there are plenty of groups that do kinda turn their noses up. We try to act different in that as mentioned, we help new roleplayers out where we can, and try to offer assistance and just generally be welcoming to new folks on the server; it's our community, our neighborhood - we need to take care of it, not try to scare people out. really that's kinda our selling point; I think to most of these guys they were looking for that intense, realistic/logical combat, or that non-handholding feeling on the business side. We really want you to go out and take a dive into things, learn things, and expand not only as a character but OOCly. -- I think the combat is a big draw for people though, as well as the general theme and I'd say... Extremism of the guild when it comes to business. Like, we have a legit document for the employee contracts, and business contracts - we have an orientation guide for new members that acts like an orientation guide that you'd get on your first day of work.”
Scassira added, “I have been told the 'selling point' for us is the immersive feel and realism by several people.”
Varro spoke of his experiences, while still new on this particular character, he had been a member previously and rejoined when he found a character that fit better within the structure of Harboson Company, “Well. As Elstine said earlier, there is an emphasis on realism. At least to a degree. That on top of the actual business that is being run in the background? It's nice. Most guilds usually hire 'mercenaries' to beat people up in taverns and get drunk. There is an air of professionalism to Harboson.”
Elstine added, “I think the dedication of the leadership helps out alot too; so many guilds just roll over that have good ideas and concepts, but the leadership isn't there. We've tried and tested leaders, I've been leading guilds since BC - and all our leaders have been in leadership positions, or are just hard workers.”
The members of Harboson Company were such a pleasure to speak with. Thank you to the members who participated. If you are looking for guild focused on realistic roleplay reach out to Elstine, Scassira or Tideguard to talk about how you could fit.)
Under the trees of Elwynn Forest, sits Fort Integra, home to the Oathsworn Vanguard. A marvel of Alliance architecture and engineering, utilizing the lessons that Stormwind’s builders and military architects had learned in Draenor, Pandaria, and Northrend.
Imposing walls that would not disgrace a lord’s castle rise high into the sky with the banners of the unit draped across the walls. The Field Marshal’s headquarters, a rather nondescript building in terms of decoration but nonetheless larger than the others.
Within the walls, I had the opportunity to meet with Field Marshal Integra Thundermar, Lieutenant Opal Brightbolt, Major Summy Sparklesprocket, Colonel Ithaeriel Brenagh and Colonel Theodore Bennas. A tour of the base and a few hours of conversation with the group showed why they are one of the strongest military units in our forces today. Going on seven years together, the group has been in almost every major military campaign in those years. The name Oathsworn Vanguard comes from their bond by word to do what needs to be done to protect the people of the Alliance.
A tight knit unit, the Vanguard members each fulfill a vital need for the unit. Lieutentant Brightbolt as the lead Medical Officer ensured new recruits meet the medical standards necessary to be active in the field. Major Sparklesprocket runs the intel section making sure missions are organized and nothing important is missed. Colonel Brenagh leads the tactical division reporting directly to the Field Marshal and Colonel Bennas is the units legal counsel as well as leads the Silver Hand Knights and Gnomish Brigade in operations.
Field Marshal Integra explained the Vanguard as we walked through the base, “We're not a typical unit. As a Vanguard, we're the first into a situation, so moral is something that I try to make sure is positive at all times. We began as a subsection of the Westfall Brigade back with the war against the Lich King. From there, we were divided into our own subsection unit and broken off. With that said, we've been operating for nine years, but have been our own unit for seven.” Serving the Alliance at the behest of the King, they have conducted and been a part of several operations that have changed the tide of war for the Alliance.
The facilities can house approximately 150 of the troops assigned to the unit. Training is an integral part of any military organization, but for the Vanguard’s colonels it's a matter of pride. “Our recruits are put through extensive and intensive training so they become seasoned much quicker than they would be normally. It's one of the things that the colonels’ pride themselves with. Making sure the recruits are stable and prepared enough that they can be relied on the first time in the field.”
Becoming a member of the Oathsworn Vanguard unit, means joining an elite military group. As Colonel Brenagh put it most succinently, “If you've the potential yer in, if not…” Currently, both those with prior military experience as well as those fresh recruits are welcome to transfer into the unit.
Field Marshal Integra explained, “Those that are completely unexperienced can sign up, but naturally they'll get training before ever seeing actual field combat. Recruits that don't measure up are seen as a liability and are removed from the unit.”
The best soldiers are those, “that realize the world is bigger than themselves, and have had to work for what they have. THose that haven't had to do that don't understand what sacrifice and valor actually are.” Bravery, honesty, common sense, valor, courage, the spirit of sacrifice, intelligence, good physical condition and a strong sense of family are all traits the members say will help a new recruit find their place within the unit.
As Lieutenant Brightbolt put it best, “Regardless of what we do here, we're all in this entire thing together. We look out for one another as much as possible.”
The loyalty and sense of camaraderie could be felt as we toured the grounds. Each individual secure in their place within the unit and friendly teasing along the way proved their devotion to each other. They each spoke of how much the group giving them purpose and that sense of family. A place to use the skills and training each of them received both before and during their time within the unit.
One of the key spots within the base was a small marble marker rising out of the middle of a garden. An inscription carved beneath it read “To the Loyal, True, and Brave.” Colonel Bennas explained the significance, “This marker is a memorial to the Battle of the Pit that the Vanguard fought in Draenor. Alongside the Vanguard, several other Alliance units participated in our attack on the Pit of Gorgrond. Due to several logistical and intel errors that were not our doing, the artillery pieces of the Iron Horde were not suppressed before we made our descent into the Pit. It was one of the rare occasions that the morale of Stormwind footmen had fallen. It is a truth that we all carry. Each man and woman that fell there and that still serves the Alliance here today bore love for their people and this world. This marker is the least we can do for them. Especially honored are the few of the Vanguard who stayed behind to help others flee to safety and paid for it with their own lives."
Lieutenant Brightbolt waved away the praise for their service I gave with a heartfelt statement, “We don't do it for the honor or even the praise. We do this because we want to make sure our people--our world--is safe from all that threaten it.”
My time with the Oathsworn Vanguard was well spent and a lovely glimpse inside a high functioning military unit. It was an honor to meet each of these talented individuals.

(OOC: It was a pleasure to spend time with the guild. If you are looking for a fun, military RP guild, Oathsworn Vanguard might just be the one for you. Currently they are accepting of all classes and races, though they note Demon Hunters are on a case by case basis at the moment.
When asked what they wished they had known before joining and what advice they had for a new recruit, the playful side of the members came out. “The cake is a lie, but the cube is forever.” They all agreed during their recruitment process and interview all the details of the guild were thoroughly explained. Opal added, “We're pretty good at letting people know exactly what they're in for right off the bat. I would say if they're looking for a place where they can find great RP, a guild of people that care, and just a place to really call home, then we're the guild they're looking for.”
And Bennas recommends, “The wackiness of the gnomes is something that needs to be experienced.”
So if you are looking for an active military guild with events each week ranging from combat to logic puzzles, with some silly events thrown in to boost morale, the Oathsworn Vanguard may be for you. Check out their guild site here: http://oathswornvanguard.shivtr.com/ to apply!)

In the green hills of Loch Modan, the group known as Doomwatch has set up their base of operations. Once a member of the Alliance military, Doomwatch is now more of a mercenary band, working for individuals as well as the Alliance to deal with foreign issues and threats as well as retrieval of artifacts and relics as hired. Formed at the time the the Burning Legion began invading Azeroth, the name was a play on the Night Watch of Duskwood. A code name from the Alliance Military for their group, it became and rallying cry for the members. So much so, that now, no longer reporting to the Alliance Military leaders, the group carries the name with pride.
Doomwatch has two branches, the Military Branch led by General Ironhands is more of an mercenary outfit, and then there is the Civillians Corps, their Non Military Branch including Artifact Hunting, and Public Relations, which would be led by a Director. Currently the position is open and so the branch reports directly to Doomwatch Chancellor, Lady Dariana Gunrik.
A tour of the base showed the care the group has for what is theirs. The grounds were well kept: a long building with a tavern like gathering space for the group to unwind in or share their meals; a forge for the care of their gear; private quarters and a barracks like accommodations for those in need; and a meeting hall for important messages and mission briefings. As we toured, the Chancellor and General answered questions about the history of the group as well as their personal story within Doomwatch. Two more members of the group joined us sharing their stories as well.
Lady Dariana Gunrik, joined after her brother and hearing about the group’s vision and mission to protect Azeroth, “What keeps me here is that I have put a lot of effort into building and keeping Doomwatch strong, as it’s leader. I love the vision Doomwatch has, for it is also the Gunrik’s vision and vow as well, protecting Azeroth.”
General Ogrimskar Ironhands, after the events in Northrend found Valerian Gunrik within Stormwind and stayed on, “fer me...its a purpose. Is not often a fella like me...after Northrend...tah find a group willin tah take me on...make me part o' tha' family. An' now tha' I am tha' General...its my job tah keeptha' family safe...tah be tha' fella watchin out fer em' all. Even as they watch out fer me. I fight cause I gotta...but...leastaways I'm fightin fer a good reason eh?”
Sir Sebastian Lightheart, champion and honorable Knight joined almost a year ago, “What drew me here at first was work and being able to serve...though I came to view most as my family....and you can't leave family no?”
Ms. Maygann Daggerfall, one of the newest members to the group added, “I've been here for a month I could say, I say I was drawn to the kindness they all seemed to show one another and I didn't really receive that in the past, their family like structure is what keeps me here for sure."
With hard work and dedication, promotional opportunities are available in Doomwatch. Currently, there are several open positions that Chancellor Gunrik would like to fill. “The Civilians Corps would be led by the Director but we don't have one yet, followed by the Ambassador who runs the Public Relations. On our Military side there is the Arcanist Conclave which still needs an Archmage. We are looking for a Director that can work extremely well and in synced with me and the General (Ic and ooc) Someone who will not cause issues with and willing to work for the best of the Doomwatch, As the General is my Second in Command, the Director would be my third in command in a sense, so it is vital the Director is someone who is able to work well with both me and Oggie here. Public Relations Ambassador will be the one who needs to ensure Doomwatch recruitment process goes smoothly and able to handle social gatherings with the public.”
The General gave his thoughts on what he was looking for on the military side, “I'm always hopeful fer more soldiers...nae showboatin fighters mind ya. Real soldiers who know how tah follow orders, chain o' command. I have a sore spot for braggards an' narcissists.”
Lady Gunrik added, “We try to avoid those who have a hard time following orders, We definitely wouldn't want someone who always wants to destroy Azeroth, And we are also looking for those with the same vision as us, protecting Azeroth and defeating the Burning Legion.”
(OOC: Doomwatch is looking for people of every class and race. “Every class is welcomed. Every race as well. We don't have limitations on classes. We have everything from pallies to warlocks. And we have had RPers with every skill level. In fact one of our officers came to us with NO skill in game RP. I taught her and now she's one of our best.” Ogrimskar stated. “Be prepared for some very unique personalities and viewpoints. Diversity is strong here.”
Annyana added, “Everyone is very welcoming and here is a great family that will always look after you.”
Sebastian gave his thoughts for those looking to join, “I would like to wish the people who join feel welcome and maybe like family....a very strange family...where the aunt has fel green eyes and horns.”
As for joining the Doomwatch group? Ogrimskar explained, “We have a short IC interview with one of the officers. Get the hiring process over so people can jump right into RP. We let people know up front the basic rundown of guild rules, That way no surprises. We absolutely will work with new people to RP or WoW in general.”Except for the “tacklehugs” that no member is immune from.Whisper either Annyana or Orgrimskar or mail them and they will respond. Every single person in Doomwatch can recruit, however.)
Doomwatch, a group of like minded individuals hoping to protect Azeroth from the dangers that threaten our happiness and lives. A happy yet dedicated bunch of men and women who stand together under the Doomwatch rallying call. Seek them out whether you need a little extra muscle, are looking for a job, or just a fun bunch to share some stories around the fire with.
(A big thank you to Annyana and Orgrimskar and the rest of the Doomwatch folks for spending a few hours with me!)
Associations of Azeroth: Amberstaff Coalition, “The Wizards of Ambermill”
By Risri Elthron
Set beneath the great purple dome, Ambermill in Silverpine Forest is home to a group of individuals known throughout the lands for their magical arts, Amberstaff Coalition. The group which prides itself on accepting any and all who wish to learn about the schools of magic and encourage members to become experts in their chosen school, has existed since the days of the Troll Wars over 2,500 years ago. Originally known as the Order of the Amberstaff, the Archwizard Purdue took on the mantle of leadership shortly after the death of the former leader, renaming the association to Amberstaff Coalition. Since then, the group has grown to over 130 individuals with both magi and martial types filling the ranks.
Individuals from all over Azeroth and Draenor have joined the order. The Royal Courier spent time with three of Amberstaff’s members, Keeper Helasar Moonblade, Captain Aacer, and Valoo Ironclad. Keeper Moonblade, one of the Amber Wizard apprentices provided a tour of the grounds and gave some background on the prestigious organization.
The grounds themselves consist of several buildings, the main hall and library, housing for the Amberstaff personnel, and a lab. The entire compound also hosts several elementals who serve the members as guards and assistants. Overhead the dome provides a warning system and protection from any hostile incursions. “This dome is only a remade version of the original which was sadly destroyed upon the invasion of the forsaken in this region. The ward is now maintained by a generator,” Keeper Moonblade shared during the tour of the facility.
The name Amberstaff came from both the staves wielded by the magi within the group as well as the practice of Ambermancy, “It is the practice of taking multiple schools and types of magick and forming it into one. This is the practice of creating the amber spells that only the most experienced of amber wizards are able to do.” Helasar explained.
The Amberstaff Coalition works to balance not only magic but also relations between the Alliance and Horde. Keeper Moonblade shared this neutral stance as “Accepting all who are willing to put aside their differences and study the Arcane. Under the dome, we do not recognize the political beliefs or structure of each person.”
Within the Amberstaff Coalition opportunity for advancement is possible with hard work and dedication. “The hierarchy of the Coalition goes as this: The Arbiter of both trees of the guild is at the top slot, and that is the official rank that the Archwizard holds. The officers of the guild make up the Council. The best of each magickal occupation such as the magi, shamans, and the such, with an exception to monks, hold a spot upon the Council. Next is where the two branches fall into place. Of the Magickal tree, the ranks from highest to lowest go as Instructor, Adept, and Apprentice. From the Martial tree, the ranks from highest to lowest are Amber guard, Regular, and Pledge.”
Keeper Moonglade shared how he came to be a member within Amberstaff, ““I was in Stormwind in search for a job and a new way of life other than prowling among the outskirts of Darnassus. I found the Archwizard on the Cathedral stairs, back when he used to openly recruit on the streets. That was the start of this adventure. I needed not to be convinced, for I joined on my own interest and accord. I was willing to start a new part of my life, and the idea of a magickal order peaked my interest to an extreme.” His focus within Amberstaff to teach and mentor arcane students as well as assist the Archwizard with public relations. “I tend to study the Arcane in my free time, for one can never truly master the magickal arts. I mostly do the things that the Archwizard needs done, or anything extremely beneficial to the Coalition as a whole, take example of my Stormwind recruiting sessions.”
Captain Aacer and Valoo Ironclad joined Keeper Moonblade after the tour to discuss how they joined, what they did for the coalition and why someone would want to join the ranks of Amberstaff. Captain Aacer was a lone adventurer who happened upon his now wife Ivory a long term member who convinced him to join. Mr. Ironclad was recruited by Captain Aacer after the recent Winter Veil Tournament hosted by House Matheredor.
As one of the two directly reporting to the Archwizard, Captain Aacer detailed his responsibilities, “I lead the less magically-inclined of our bunch. For me, that entails the leading of the vanguard, as we are the first and last line of defense for our magi, who often times are in the back. As for training, generally I run our agents through practice sparring with myself and adjust their skills appropriately if I see issue. I'm also in charge of seeking those amongst our ranks for the position of Amberguard, which are the most skilled and elite of the Martial Tree. Since the Broken Shore though, they have been few, as we suffered many casualties during our charge at the Broken Shore.”
Mr. Ironclad told his story of joining, “I think I fall under the martial tree, Captain Aacer here was what drew me to the Coalition. I ran into him at a charity tournament a few weeks back, we fought and he won. I wanted a rematch though, so about a week ago I ran into him outside of Stormwind and challenged him to a rematch, he won again, but that’s alright cus it was a much better fight. After that fight we realized we were both big contenders in the Brawler's guild when it was active, and he convinced me to join the Coalition.”
Upon the question of why someone would be interested in joining the Amberstaff Coalition, Captain Aacer spoke passionately about doing something bigger than yourself, “I think the thing that would attract people to the Coalition, would firstly be the attraction of learning more about the magical world around us. Deeper than that though, it is the attraction of doing something bigger and better than yourself. We fight the Legion at its forefront, which for many martials is more than enough to wake up on the daily."
Keeper Moonblade added, “We give a shelter to those willing to study of the magickal arts. Even the controlled practice of demonology is allowed, if they have the proper licenses and such required to legally summon demons. We also provide a safe environment that we use to commence multiple studies and the sorts under the dome of Ambermill.”
The newest member Mr. Ironclad also voiced his enthusiasm of Amberstaff, “I'd say if ye want to fight the Legion it sure is better to do it with a good group of lads at yer back, hah! But nae, The Coalition's treated me well so far, and they've got a good goal.”
Loyalty and trust in the Archwizard was expressed best by Captain Aacer, “I have faith in the ability of Alranon to lead the Coalition into the forefront of situations and get all of us out. He pushes his hardest to care for everyone around him, and attend to every individual he encounters. That stress can take a toll on a man, and he handles it well."
Mr. Ironclad added his approval of the Arbitor and Amberstaff, “The archwizard certainly knows what he's doing and I think we can do a lot a' good work on the isles.”
“Amberstaff is a unit. We are a cooperation of individuals who seek something greater. We look out for one another, so don't be afraid to ask for help. We're all there for you.” Captain Aacer stated proudly.
Keeper Moonblade summed up Amberstaff as “We have a family-esque style of how we treat those in the Coalition, and we have an accepting community within.”
The Amberstaff Coalition is currently looking for more individuals to assist in their pursuit of knowledge of magic to protect and serve Azeroth. If you have interest in joining, seek out Keeper Moonblade or Captain Aacer for more information.
(OOC: Amberstaff is very accepting of all characters, as Helarsar states: “We accept basically everything, however, any character with any DnD alignment that ends with -evil is not allowed in the guild. I recruit about every other day in the mage district as well. For the magickals I recruit, I ask a series of OOC and IC questions to determine if that person is fit to join the guild.”
Aacer adds, “Well of course we look for mages by the bushel! If you're even slightly interested in magic, waddle on over. As for classes, what Helasar said. Contacting us through whisper is really good! We have two criers who walk through the Mage District everyday proclaiming Amberstaff's name. So that is a really good RP starter. We'll get you set up with an IC interview with either myself if you're a martial, or a wizard if you're magical.
Some additional OOC considerations for joining into Amberstaff, Aacer encouraged newcomers to not be shy, “Having some level of lore knowledge is nice, but we have no issue at all with teaching them and informing them on the lore they need to build a really neat character!” You can expect, “A very loud welcome in guild chat (OOC chat), our discord information, and a waiting new bundle of friends.”)
Amberstaff Coalition is an association working within Azeroth to improve the lives of all citizens. The Archwizard Purdue had this to add, “My people are my family. They are the only thing that keeps me alive. Without them, I would have tossed myself off Dalaran years ago. I lead them because I need them as much as they need me. I give them guidance and share my knowledge, my home, my smile. My people are without equal. The best in all of Azeroth. Captain Aacer and Champion Blackwool can slay any foe. Wizards Helasar and Elias could crush any sorcerer. I unite them because I know under me we can become legends.”
(OOC Note: Once again thank you to Helarsar, Aacer and Valoo for your time, the tour and the excellent RP interview! You let me figure out a few things about how this will work going forward so thank you for being my guinea pigs. Thank you @alranon-purdue for agreeing to letting me do this. I will be reaching out to more GMs in the coming weeks and months about being featured. Please bare with me as I’d like to keep this at a slower pace than the People of Azeroth column which we will be starting up again soon.)
