ive never heard of eternal sonata but you make it sound really good...
i really enjoyed it! it’s a bit of a guilty pleasure bc the premise of “jrpg inside chopin’s dying dream” sounds like the ultimate pretentious indie game and sometimes the cutscenes can drag or the game wants to make sure you really absolutely get whatever point it’s trying to make
but the gameplay is a really fun spin on traditional turn-based combat where you spend your turn by moving around the battlefield and alternating regular attacks and special attacks u can chain with other characters (which sounds complex but the game introduces it v gently) and all the characters play differently and are fun. there’s a neat mechanic where enemies will drastically change form and abilities depending on if they’re in light or shadow. the design itself is gorgeous with beautiful environments and detailed characters contrasting with the drab browns and greys in the real world parts. every chapter has a little history lesson about chopin’s life and music which some ppl might not care about but i found interesting bc i’m a nerd. the dream world plot itself is kind of standard jrpg but with a bit more personal tragedy and parts that echo stuff chopin lived thru irl. the final boss fight has one of my favourite dialogue lines in all of videogames, it still gives me chills now.
it’s definitely not for everyone, if u hate jrpgs or kinda artsy fartsy games u probably won’t enjoy it, but i think it’s one of those games where if it sounds like something you’re interested in it probably is? and it was released like ten years ago so you can probably find it very cheaply.
