A snippet from this week. Featuring Em'het sass.
"What's so funny?" Kyadin asked, returning to the head of the table with his oatmeal.
"You wouldn't get it," Em'het shrugged. "It was an intellectual exchange."
Kyadin rolled his eyes, his mood the only one still sour. "Well, whatever, can't have been that funny if you were the one telling the joke."
Em'het was going to stick his tongue out, but caught the look from his mother and decided maybe one funny act of disobedience was enough for now.
Sorry, my log for this week is so late, it's been a busy start to the week! But back in action for at least a...few hours lol.
I'm done with Black Wings (for now). It's not a full first draft yet. 22 out of 68 chapters are in actual first draft stage, the rest are in detailed pre-draft version. Well. Truth be told about five, maybe eight chapters are not even pre-draft, but... well. They were more difficult than the rest, apparently.
Well, June was almost perfect and July was… not. During the first week I had multiple family visits and didn’t really expect to get anything done (and didn’t), so that was okay, but then at the beginning of the second week I got called into work for a few days. I will get to take a few more days off in August to compensate, but the stuff I was dealing with there was kind of stressful.
And then, at the end of the second week, my dog, who is only three years old, was diagnosed with kidney disease. They caught it early, so he will most likely still be around for a while, but still… that was so depressing that I couldn’t focus on anything. And THEN, it became obvious that our house needs some major repairs, which we more or less expected but had hoped to put off for a few more years. So there are contractors here fixing the ceiling as I type this, and more are coming later in the week. I can barely write with just PWLI in the house, much less strangers, so no writing is happening at the moment.
Somewhere in there I did do some actual writing; in fact, I wrapped up the final denouement conversation with Arthur (like 10000 words), so all that’s left now is to write the final romance scenes for each of the three main characters, and I have a pretty good idea of how those are going to go. I just have to get myself into the right headspace for it.
I hoped I’d have all of the main writing done by now, but I do still have some vacation days left to use in August, and not really all that much remaining to write. Tomorrow is Lughnasadh, which begins the season of harvest and completion. Let’s hope it’s an auspicious time in which to finally bring all these years of writing to some kind of completion.
So, not a bad start to this year overall - Corpse Flower is finished, leaving only one fic remaining in A Year in the Life series. Accomplishment!
The Faerie Ring is my original novel (the title is a placeholder) and I would like to improve on these numbers in February.
A Life Less Ordinary - a fic I have been working on for over ten years (!) and am so close to finishing. I often find the last chapters of longfics so difficult, particularly this fic which is so close to my heart and want to make the ending satisfying. I’ve also been going back and amending the rest of the fic slightly, hopefully fixing any typos and a few flaws. I want to get the last chapter finished and posted this week before I go on holidays, so fingers crossed.
If I can keep this up, and finish at least one old fic or project per month, I’ll be happy. 2019 is the year of finishing unfinished fics!

A personal favorite scene from this week:
“We need to find out what he knows,” Jax insisted. “These people aren’t supposed to be here. They have Te’s banners, so he’s been here, and he isn’t supposed to have been. We need to figure out what he’s using these people and this planet for.”
“These people aren’t going to understand our questions even if we could communicate with them,” Ana cut in, finishing her strawberries had clearly soured her mood. “The longer we stay here, the more danger we put ourselves in. What happens when Te or his guardians come stomping through this town and we have to fight them? How many innocent bystanders are going to get caught in the crossfire? How will you feel when this poor kid gets hit by an errant energy blast that does way more damage than just a light sprain?”
“Ana, I am not having this conversation again,” Jax set his jaw.
Ana glared back at him, setting her own jaw just as firmly. “It was a perspective you may not have considered in your haste to make some big discovery. Listening to the perspective of others is something all good leaders do,” she leaned forward into the table, challenging him. “Wouldn’t you agree?”
“Ana, if you want off this planet so badly, I will gladly send you home right now.” Jax accepted her challenge, also leaning into the table towards her. “Is that what you want? To get sent home for a lecture on not obeying your commanding officer? I am more than happy to provide that for you.”
This is what happens when you put childhood friends who grew up as equals on a team and say "follow that guy you've been teasing and having sleepovers with every weekend for a good portion of your life, but then he disappeared for ten years and now he's back while you were loyal and stayed home and did everything you were supposed to do but because he's older he gets to make the decisions instead of you"
Week 1 has been a great success! A couple of days were spotty, but most days I exceeded my goal, so I'm proud of that! @the-wip-project Stars pleeeaaasseee!! *grabby hands*

And a personal favorite snippet:
“Hey,” Mac whispered across Ana, who was sitting between them. “You want to switch? Eat fast while your mom is gone and she’ll never know.” He winked.
Why would Mac want to switch food with him? Trading yogurt and fruit for oatmeal? Was he crazy? Or was it something more malicious? Had Mac poisoned the food? Laced it with some kind of medicine that would incapacitate him? The look of horror that immediately overtook his expression made Mac tilt his head in his own expression of confusion.

A very productive week, I was possessed by several scenes and ideas this week, hopefully this can continue.

A snippet from this week. This is from the start of the scene leading into the Flash Fiction Friday piece, which I didn't post because of the word limit.
Despite her hands tied behind her back, despite her defeated position, seeing her steadied his mind. The anxious, racing thoughts stilled. Everything would be okay as long as she was near. Nothing could -
A new figure moved into view, blocking out everything else. It was only the back of him. The back of his hooded cloak, the color of ash in a cold hearth. Everything about him was long. He would have been taller than Jax even if they hadn't all been forced to their knees. His long spine was crooked in his old age, forcing him to lean forward.
Em'het pressed his back into the wall, squeezing tears out of his eyes. With one hand, he covered his mouth to keep himself from making a sound; with the other, he clutched at his shawl above his heart. It felt like it was going to explode. It had grown too big, it was cutting off his lungs, it was shaking his entire body with its fast and fraying rhythm. The sound of it filled his ears and made his head ache.
A glimpse of a god was all it took. He strangled the scream rising in his throat. He shoved his spine into the wall to stop himself from running away. He blinked the cold sweat out of his eyes.
And still, after all this panic and fear, as soon as he sees his mom in trouble, he's like "never mind, brb, gonna kill a god"
