oh also apparently the typos are a turn on too, ive been informed this multiple times
this is not the end-all-be-all of writing tips, let me preface with that. this is just an accumulation of tips i’ve noted on my own in the almost ten years of writing i’ve spent on this app mixed with tips i’ve read and gathered from other people.
but a few pointers i have are
tags: these are incredibly important, they can be as plain and collective as possible or they can be incredibly niche and only applicable to the content you’re posting. but they are important tools and they aid in your content gaining traction and your blog gaining popularity. it is incredibly important to include all possible for the character or figure you are writing more, in my examples i’m going to use chris sturniolo tags. you will find the tag section at the bottom of each new post you create, below the screenshot is of the tag section.
meaning: if your content doesn’t have a named character alongside the figures in the fandom you’re writing for, use an x reader tag; ie: chris sturniolo x reader.
meaning: if your content has a named character alongside the figures in the fandom you’re writing for, use an x oc /x original character tag; ie: chris sturniolo x oc / chris sturniolo x original character.
meaning: if your content doesn’t have anything sexual, triggering, gruesome, bloody, horrific, you should tag it as fluff or sfw. ie: chris sturniolo fluff or chris sturniolo sfw.
meaning: if your content does have anything sexual, triggering, gruesome, bloody, horrific, you should tag it as smut or nsfw. ie: chris sturniolo smut or chris sturniolo nsfw.
read more: this is a tool to help cut the length of your post so that people don’t have to spend absurd amounts of time scrolling, without removing any of your content, all it does is add a “keep reading” button that the reader can click if they wish to view more of your content. the screenshots below show what button to press and how it appears.
abbreviations: do not add text slang, acronyms, numbers, or abbreviations when you are writing in person dialogue. it gives your content an unfinished and poor impression.
meaning: if your character is saying “you’re joking.” to another person physically, do not write “ur joking.”, just write the full word.
meaning: if your character is saying “i’ll be right back.” to another person physically, do not write “i’ll brb.”, just write the full word.
meaning: if your character is talking about numbers, such as “oh there’s two of them.” to another person physically, do not write “there’s 2 of them.”, just write the full word.
descriptive writing + imagery: this is vital, it adds depth and other elements to your story while keeping the reader/s attention. it’s important to include details about where the characters are, what time of day it is, how cold or warm it is. it’s also important to describe what your characters are feeling and their body language. but have fun with it, try out different descriptive words and imagery styles.
pairings/duos/relationships: it’s always good to inform your readers of who will be with who either from the start or eventually in your story. i always add the pairing of the story right underneath the title. ie: pairing: chris sturniolo x fem!reader
synopsis: this is a paragraph that gives your audience small clues as to what your story is about, without giving away every detail. it’s important not to add any plot twists in the synopsis section because you want that element of surprise to still be in effect. i always add my synopsis right under my parings paragraph.
warnings: these are incredibly important! always post these above the read more link as it allows your audience to know what to prepare themselves for, especially if your story is sexually or violently graphic or if it includes triggering topics [ suicide, self harm, vomiting, sexual content, SA, violence, anything disturbing. ] adding proper warnings allows your audience to know whether or not to click out before they start reading. i usually place my warnings right above the read more link so that they can choose to keep reading or not, and so that they have the warnings fresh in mind.
lastly, just have fun with whatever you’re creating. a few good blogs to follow for other writing tips or advice or just anything related to writing are @urfriendlywriter @novelbear @thepromptswhisperer and @love-me-a-good-prompt !!
Here I am again, in my lil bean’s ask! 💛 I wanted to ask you one thing that you like and one thing that you don’t like/wanna improve about your style! Aaaand what’s the most difficult relationship or friendship to write! Hope you’re having the best day 🥰💛
AHH LINDA I AM YOUR LIL BEAN <3 ooooh GOOD QUESTION!
So something I really like about my writing style I feel is, something I’ve talked about earlier, is the connection of color and emotions through things like color theory and description. as someone into visual arts and art in general. I’ve always written my writing that way, because emotions and colors have just always been connected to one another for me, so it is just something I love about writing, and I feel I do fairly well :)
Something I really want to improve about my writing style is consistency most likely, which I’ve been improving on for years, but just keeping my writing style consistence throughout the context of the story, staying true to who I am as a writer and not drawing to be like others, just to stay on my OWN consistent path of writing throughout the entire context of the story, but I feel personally I’m improving upon that each time I write, which is good, because consistency is key for many things!!!
And ok! Most difficult relationship....hmmm...
I wouldn’t call this difficult, but I would call it wanting to stay true to two characters I love and wanting to keep them in character but have the ability to trust one another. I’ve been working hard on Joe Liebgott and Hazel Parker’s sort of friends to lovers relationship in The Soldier of Stars and even though it’s not a difficult thing to write simply because I feel they mesh well, I just wanted to make it work in the right way that I wanted it to work since the very beginning.
Their friendship turned relationship is very much based on trust, loyalty, bonds, knowing and understanding one another, that sort of inside joke mentality who can have fun together and laugh together and cry together and just have full complete trust in telling one another things. And by the time I reached their relationship together I wanted to show that their relationship means more than what a kiss can signify. That they’ve built their relationship so much that after they kiss, it’s more just like picking up where they left off, except they can be a sort of ‘thing’ now. But I really tried to get it right and from the comments I’ve received, it seems I’ve done it actually, which means that really working at something I believed in paid off!!
Their relationship for me has always been about trusting one another, something Hazel struggles with and being able to be completely open because let’s be real - they are complete opposites, yet they are one of my most favorite friends to lovers I’ve ever worked on, truly. Just the connection they have with one another throughout the entire context of writing it, I feel I’ve done what I set out to do in the beginning of writing this, as their relationship is one of the important things. I can’t describe how much I love their friendship, turned relationship, it just makes me happy to know that even though I was too hard on myself for making it right, in the end it became what I wanted. I could go on about them I swear, and just everything little thing that led me to believe that they had a good foundation for a relationship together and just AHHHH I love them so much - they’ve been also super fun to write, even if I was extra hard on myself, they were worth it :)
thank you so so much linda, wonderful questions as always!!! AHHH i loved these!! i got to talk about my writing and my favorite couple EVER AHHH they are truly adorable, thank you so so much!!! <3
what’s your writing process like? also i’m so so excited for the next chapter of the neighbor story it’s so hot without feeling awkward and the writing is just perfect!
- 🧝🏾♀️
oh god. my writing process is a chaotic, organized mess. and it differs with each piece of work that i write. for this fic? first i start out with an idea and create a draft for it, then ill seek out my gfs opinion on it and if shes fw it, we'll start brainstorming together. if she's not into it, i force her to think of something and that gets my brain gears working to figure out the rest /hj 🦅🦅
so my standard process works like this:
come up with an idea and brainstorm for it
expand on what ive brainstormed
create an outline
expand on certain scenes included in the outline
write it all out </3
let me actually show you what my process looks like (as spoiler free as possible 💔):
first i start out with telling my gf my ideas (aka i word vomit), then she'll help me expand on them, suggest more ideas, dialogue, etc and ill adjust it to fit my preferences. im also biiig on visualization so i make sure to do research and find pics that can help me envision the scenes i want to write out!
then ill do a general summary for how i want the fic/chapter to play out. (also yes i use comic sans. makes my brain tingle 🦫)
then ill create an outline expanding on that:
then me or my gf will expand on any of the scenes that i have in mind:
and once we're happy with how its looking, i proceed with actually writing it all out 🚬🐟. ill have multiple drafts for one piece of work cause im always adjusting things, adding stuff, or changing my ideas—and things can get really messy so i try making it clean by creating new documents for it lol
something i also do that i suggest literally everyone who writes or wants to write, do as well—is jotting down any thoughts, scenes, or dialogue you come up with that you could use for later!! dont wait till you get to that particular scene in order to write for it. if you can write for it right now, you can use it later and it'll save you so much time.
(these are all dialogue that i may or may not use 🙇🏻♀️).
and that's pretty much what my writing process looks like ₍ˆ ̳ , ̫ , ̳ˆ₎. as for smut? thats a whole other different process.
Hello, I just want to ask an advice I’ve been on this blog/playform for around 1-2 or so but my blog nor my works has gotten really much attention and I want to ask how to boost one’s presence here but like due to school I had an infinite hiatus, also I’m kind of shy to interact sometimes with other writers that’s why I keep my knit here small😅 but well I’ll take in any advice. Thank you in advance Sam💜
first of all, hello, nice to meet you lol! i’m not much of an advice person, but i can give you some tips that may help!
1) try to post consistently! i know school drains a lot of people, myself included, but if you post consistently, that drags followers and mutuals in!
2) tag your posts properly! i didn’t know how to do this in the beginning so i went to a blog i was following at the time and copied what they had in their tags (ones that were relevant)! for example, if you write a mark smut, tag it #mark lee smut, #nct dream smut, #mark lee x reader, etc. you can use mine as an example if you’d like!
3) make your blog aesthetic. this is kind of a shallow one, but i tend to see that followers like a pretty/simple/aesthetic layout. when i first started, i drew inspiration from other blogs, but now i just do my own thing lol. whatever is pleasing to the eyes.
4) remember that you’re writing for you! the followers and engagement will sorta come naturally after that. just write what you want, okay?
5) try and make mutuals! i know this is scary but it helps! having friends on tumblr that will read, like, and promote your work really helps!
there is probably more but this is all i can think of right now! i hope this helps<33 if you’d like, let me know your @ and i’d love to become mutuals!!!
A tip for people struggling to start their first draft; try starting with a line of dialogue! You get to start the draft with some easy, immediate momentum, as you’re already right in the middle of some action, and you have your next sentence prepped, i.e. the response to said dialogue.
Here’s some examples from my own fics, if you need it!
“I’m sorry if I’m wasting your time.”
“Rest assured, Mr. Blackwood, this is a part of my job.”
“Oh, uh, Martin is fine.”
~
“You had better have a good explanation for yourself.”
“Uh …”
Jon held up Martin’s report on the Mansell case, which he had turned in earlier that day. Martin’s stomach sank. Oh, yes. That.
~
“It’s getting late, Jon.”
Jon glanced up from the pages of North Essex Cold Cases 1970-75 to see Martin standing in the doorway of the archives.
~
“Thinking of buying it?”
Martin leapt back with a startled yelp, dropping the suit jacket’s price tag. “Jesus Christ, Jon, what are you doing? I thought you were buying the groceries.”
~
“This is so exciting,” said Martin, tapping the steering wheel with his fingertips. “I’ve never been on a road trip before, you know.”
“And you still haven’t. This isn’t a road trip, this is an investigatory excursion on behalf of our place of employment.”
An important thing for writers and readers alike is to remember the existence of soft metaphors! Using words that are understood and common language to describe or explain complex concepts like space magics.
Example of this I use myself is with my Awoken Eyahn, I often say she can hear stars singing to her, because of personal flavor headcanons for earthborn awoken I have. When I write that I do not at all mean she literally hears songs, or music, or noise. It’s a much deeper, much more personal connection, she can feel them in a way I can’t explain or describe, and she as the character with the voice equally cannot due to rudimentary vocabulary, so we call it singing and hearing to make it quickly understandable to the reader.
If you inspect the Books of Sorrows you can find some of this too, like when it talks about the Desthsingers singing apart reality or meddling with death itself. Of course there is the literal pretense there, they use chanting and singing in their rituals, but also they are working with forces we don’t understand and don’t have vocabulary for. So we just call it singing and accept there is something more at work there than simple words. Or when Oryx Takes things, we know he doesn’t just literally pick them up by the scruff of the neck, he sends them somewhere, does something and brings them back. Yet we have a very simple word for it, taking.
Using complex words to explain simple things is a neat way to spice up writing, but equally is using simple concepts to explain complex things, or things that don’t translate well between alien languages or cultures.
