I read fan fiction, quite a bit of it. I sometimes review, but not often because I am usually reading on a mobile device and it takes a lot to type out a full review on those devices. However, I do review from time to time. I almost never review to simply tell someone I don’t like the work. If I don’t like it, I don’t read it. I don’t waste time reading stuff I don’t like when I’m reading for pleasure in the first place. That would give the opposite effect!
Anyway, I sometimes get a reply from the author, usually a thank you or a response to a question I asked. It is rare, but sometimes I get a reply from an author that makes me wonder on which planet they live or if someone did “bad” things to their cereal that morning. This is about one of those. I was reading a Harry Potter fiction by an author with a very distinctive, quick, dialogue driven style. I enjoy it and all of her works for a range of reasons, but mostly because the stories are fun, somewhat original twists on the canon story, and the rapid pace of her writing. So, after reading her works for several years, and placing her and her work on my “favorites” lists, I write a review. Here it is:
I am glad you are continuing with the story. I'd like to see Harry heal, and move into a relationship and graduate ready to go fully into life post Hogwarts.
A comment about your writing style. It is you. Don't change your style (as you've said you won't) for others. The only big suggestion would be to make sure that speakers and subjects are more clearly indicated than you do now. There are too many times I have to go back and trace the back and forth dialog to figure out who said what and what is going on. This happens when you have either not indicated a speaker by name in a while or when you use so many pronouns in place of speakers, subjects, and objects of sentences that the reader can be thoroughly lost and have to work to figure it out. Many readers of fanfiction, and fiction in general, do not want to work while reading for pleasure.
Other than the usual copy edit advice I give when I choose to actually review, this is probably the most pressing issue with your writing.
Stylistically, I enjoy the change from other writers, and the rapid pace that develops in the story because of it. I have you on my favorite authors list, not just followed authors. I have read almost everything you have written on this site, I believe. I look forward to more.
Not too bad, right? Actually, I say that I enjoy her work and have her on my favorite authors list.
Her reply: (I’ve put in symbols to avoid spelling out words I prefer not to have in writing. Other than that, this is all her wording with no edits on my part.)
Oh god, poor little baby cant figure out if it doesn't say Harry said, who is talking. Please stick to see spot run books. You are obviously not ready for above grade 1 stories. I write for adults.
You are a pathic cow. You think you are some god. When you deem to review? Oh saintly goddess we should pay for the honor. take a flyng leap off the tallest building. No one gives a rat sh*t what you think. You pathetic cow manouer.
You don't like my style then here is a f*cking clue, STOP READING. I write for FUn, go F * C K yourself with a hot poker.
A little over the top, yeah? So, what happened next, you ask? Here is what happened. I logged on and tried to private message a reply, because surely there was some mistake. I find that her private message function is blocked. Many authors do that. So, I go to the fiction and to the reviews, and write a response to the review/reply. Here is what I said:
Wow! What a crazy response you wrote to my generally positive review. I said I like your style. I said don't change it. All I commented on was that sometimes I can't follow who is saying what. And this is what I get from you (and I can't reply via private message because you have that blocked)...
(I then inserted the reply to my review here...)
As I said, wow. I will remember that you don't actually like constructive suggestions, just accolades. I will continue reading because I do actually like your stories. Which I said in my review, but that clearly means nothing to you since I dared to have actual advice from my experience in editing (as my job for pay, not just for fun to help out). I do hope this was more a reaction from not being in a good mood than your regular response to suggestions.
But wait, there’s more! She has blocked me from being able to review at all! So, crazy, huh? I thought about posting her name publicly, but I really don’t want that. Just a friendly warning to all who review and comment on fan fiction, sometimes authors get very nasty with the reply, especially if you aren't gushing.
