Tips on a good alien invasion story?
if youre making ocs i cannot emphasise how fantastic the enneagram typing system is. the whole concept is it outlines how different people respond to trauma based on their core fear/desire which is incredibly useful for figuring out solid character motivations and how that affects their actions.
example, lets say theres a character who constantly feels the need to be "top dog". do they control others because theyre scared of being controlled themselves (8)? do they need to be better than everyone because theyre scared of being worthless (3)? do they need validation and security so theyre scared to become an outcast (6)?
example 2, lets say theres a different character whos an avoidant escapist. do they jump between things they find exciting because theyre scared to face pain (7)? do they crave a sense of identity so they withdraw into fantasy and wallow in their feelings (4)? do they block out the world to avoid change and confrontation in an attempt at stability (9)?
for both these examples, despite sharing a main "trait" each type has a different reasoning and in turn different presentation of the same behaviours.
the site i linked is fantastic in that not only does it give genuinely insightful descriptions but also breaks down how each fear/desire manifests at different levels of mental health ranging from their best selfTM all the way down past rock bottom, which is again a really useful reference for a redemption/fall from grace/character growth/trying to keep a consistent characterisation across different situations. so yeah enneagram cool
If you're writting a story and you're already planning out spin-offs without actually having your story properly finished you are setting yourself to failure
Hello everyone, I never thought I'd say this at the big age of 28 but: how to you write good fanfiction and find the courage to share them?
My head is full of idea but i never seem to be satisfied with whatever I write, but I really want to share all of those story with people.
So.. does anyone of you have any tips?
should I write stuff in english even though it isn't my first language?
yeah I know the obvious answer is probably "of course", but I'm still kinda insecure about it... I've always had good grades in english at school but still I've baerly talked to other people who speak english natively or been to a county that has english as it's main language yet. besides, sometimes I don't quite understand how to use some expressions or certain gramatical rules that I should know for writting anyway, if anyone has any opinion or tip, please let me know!
I could never use AI for my writing because I always think, if I'm not interested enough to write it, why would anyone be interested enough to read it?
Guys heres a tip if you want to write complex and kinda toxic relationships that you want people to root for
1-DONT MAKE THE ABUSE ROMANTIC!!!lLIKE NEVER!!!while yes you want to make the caracters likeble dont use the actual abusive and fucked up parts of the relationship to do that the abuse SHOULD ALWAYS BE TREATED WITH A LEVEL OF ACTUAL RESPECT and Even if the caracter has a motive for theyre abuse remember ABUSE IS NEVER JUSTIFYED and the caracter that comited the abuse should always be held acountable in one way or another by the story or other caracters
2-please Lets try not sexualizing abuse….kinda enter into the first Point but its só common in romantasy and those kinda shit that i needed to put it in here…like Lets try to give some respect to the victim at least
3-“but them how am i supposed to make people root for the ship”SHOWN THEM HOW THE CARACTERS ARE IN THEYRE GOOD MOMENTS!!!show that they Mean well but the situation is fucked and even though they could do another thing to solve they were too fucked up or confused to think that!!!show that they care or that they have theyre own motives for doing shit like that!!!and also remember morally ambíguos situations are youre friend in this situation…like for an example forcefeeding someone and taking theyre autonomy IS WRONg but if theyre trying to save someone its still not RIGHT but at least its justifiable…that what is missing in those toxic bad boys of romantasy…theyre missing this kinda of nuance of admiting that abuse is never RIGHT but that it can be UNDERSTANDBLE if you know the how to create the cirscuntance for that
4-also kinda related to the third tip but there are some events that Even if you play with the circunstances SHOULD NEVER BE EVEN UNDERSTANDBLE!!this especially apply if youre taking real life inspirations…i like to thing this is an espectrum…the more fantástical the abuse is the more easy its to justify it in the eyes of the public…remember trying to take real Life things that actually fucked up a lot of people life and trying to make it more understandble will make people MORE DISGUSTED because them it will Sound like youre diminushing these peoples suffering in prol of making youre caracter more likeble.like again theres a diference of making someone canibalize another person in prol of making them live(which is definitly amore fantastical moment)then for example an slave owner buying someone because they want to save them, because in the first case the thing is almost completly fantastical, but them in the other youre actually putting a thing real people do and saying “but what if he has his motives???”which treats the pain of real people as less then the people who abuses them IN REAL LIFE
5-show how the abuse the person did affects the other partner and always remember THE PAIN OF THE PARTNER SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE FOCOS NOT THE PAIN OF THE PERPETRATOR…like the perpetrator can be in pain, or better yet SHOULD, but you should never lose the focos on the victim or what they did to her….remember always MOTIVE IS NOT EXCUSEEE
6-show the flipside aswell, like how the abuser helped the victim and show how the abuser is trying to change to make amends, and actually SHOW THE CHANGE, make the abuser WANT the best for the abused and try to reach that, try to compensate, show the good parts of the relationship, how when they dont make each other worst they make each other better, show why they want to be with each other after all the shit
7-also related to the third Point….lets try to not use power dinamics aswell please…its way easyer to make the love for the two of them to actually stick when they can actually give up and go away them when one of them is bound to the other by some kind of power dinamic…and its even worst if its a real life power dinamic…that why its easyer to accept a woman being the abuser than a man…the real life paralels are minor and therefore easyer to ignore.
8-and at last, remember ambiguos moments are youre friend in this type of situation…maybe the abuser has a magical coping mecanism that hurts the abused….maybe theyre being manipulated, Maybe theyre scared of being abandoned, maybe theyre afraid of the other one doing something stupid….the key of the thing is to make the abuse horrible but the motives or situation understandble
Só yeah thats all if some actual victim of abuse wants to add theyre cents be free to do so(Also be free to say if i did say anything shitty i know how complex this topic can be)
Ps:remember to put trigger warning in youre story
MY OPINION ON CHARACTER STORAGE APPS/WEBSITES
I am looking for an good app to keep my OCs,so I'll be giving you all my opinions on the ones i test.
The order is the order of Wich I tested first.
1- Toyhouse
If you like making very personalized profiles, prefer to focus on drawings, toyhouse is a good option for you,if you known how to code.
The fact that you need a code to enter may be a bum to a lot of people, but finding a code nowadays doesn't seem so hard,so that's not the big problem,if you don't know how to code,or you will have to break your head to learn,or you will have to content yourself with a simple, minimalist,Google doc like profile.
2- Character hub
Easy to use, pretty interface, during the character profile creation they give you options of tabs/questions to make the process easier.
Focus on images/drawings.
Easy to organize.
If you like simple/minimalist aesthetic changes, that's a good option.
Not a lot of options for personalization(basic only color of buttons and the page)
Can be very laggy for mobile.
3-Ocbin
Needs an invitation code, and I didn't liked the interface enough to bother looking for one.
I think the interface is kind of old style,is not ugly, but it isn't my thing.
4- Ref sheet.net
Easy to make an account, doesn't need an invitation code.
Interface is not interesting, not my thing.
Not a lot of options for personalization.
I can't delete the account I made,if anyone knows how please tell me
5-Worldanvil
It's cool so far,the interface is nice and it's easy to use,the only bad thing is that apparently you have to upgrade to be able to make your project private.
A bit annoying to use on mobile.
But the focus is more Worldbuilding than character creation.
6-campfire
It's okay, interface is pretty, easy to use.
Laggy on mobile.
7-Unvale
The interface is pretty, easy to use,the only option of personalization is the color of the character profile.
Kind of a character hub without the lagging.
Will test:
Obsidian
Feel free to suggest apps/websites for me to try.
