Welcome to Lambertvale
I forgot to regale you all with my weekend experience with the green bathrobe lady of this weekend. So this past weekend, I went to City Market with Mike to grab a cup of coffee and some waffle wedges for breakfast. I'm still half asleep, but not too asleep to notice that a middle-aged woman in a bright mint green bathrobe is in the way of my coffee-seeking path. She's standing behind her chair, and looking directly at me, her elbow bent, her hand extended into a peace sign.
I look at her questioningly, expecting her to get the idea that my procession in her direction is actually an attempt to get to the coffee pots behind her. "I'm peacing people for the New Year," she proudly declares as she continues to stand in my way, smiling at me. I note that her hair is a wildly unkempt mass of auburn on her head. "Oh?" I say. I'm not sure what else to say to that. "Excuse me, I just want to -" I start to explain my coffee-laden desires, but she interrupts me. "I think peacing people is a great way to start the New Year," she insists. "Everyone should do it." She holds her two extended fingers proudly before me. I begrudgingly flash a peace sign back, and start to wonder if I'll ever get to the coffee bar. When I continue to shift my weight, looking around her to the coffee, probably looking mildly distressed, she reaches over to the countertop and grabs what looks to be a vintage Ronald McDonald toy featuring a child-like Ronald reclining in an inflatable pool chair. She holds it out for me to see. "Isn't he adorable?" she giggles. I nod, reassessing her green bathrobe, wondering who had let their unmedicated mother out of the house this morning. I start looking around to see if anyone else on the premises seems to feel responsible for this woman, and am briefly relieved when a younger woman comes over to greet her, but she's just as quickly gone, and now the green bathrobe woman is putting the Ronald McDonald toy in my hand, despite my protests. "Give him to someone who will enjoy him as much as I do," she says. "I...don't know anyone who would," I protest, but she doesn't seem to hear me, and instead goes on about how cute it is again, taking him out of and putting him back into my hand to point to the tiny details on his figure as she elaborates on her adoration. When I finally concede to giving him away to someone else who will also enjoy him, she immediately changes her mind, takes him back and says, "You know....I think I'll keep him. I'd miss him." I nod and try to smile encouragingly as I had no interest in taking the toy to begin with. I'm hoping this is indicative of a closure to the conversation, and try to step around her again At this point a group of four teenage boys who also seem to want coffee come up behind me. The green bathrobe woman immediately greets them with a peace sign which they questioningly return. As she starts grabbing their attention, I finally manage to slip past her to the coffee. Coffee bliss is had, and I make sure to take the long way around the store to avoid another encounter as I head back towards the door to pay and leave, head down, hands tightly around my cup, nearly drowning my face in the stuff. Behind me, I can hear her going on, "Look at him! Isn't he adorable?!"
