“I look at you and see him, but… not him. Does that make sense?”
“I suppose. But I would hardly hope to be alike to that… person.”
Nightmare snorted, watching with glee as Rior developed something akin to sour-face at his comparison.
Rior had appeared in this multiverse a while back, battered and broken and nearly dead. Despite that, he had still managed to put up a fight, causing the swap Nightmare who had found him to flee. The first time.
The second time, Rior had begrudgingly accepted help from the hooded pseudo-vigilante, only realizing just who he was after he had lost consciousness.
But this swapped Nightmare didn’t act like Arir. He acted like… how Rior might, if Arir hadn’t done what he did. But of course, that was just a generalization. Rior wouldn’t act exactly like this Nightmare. There were some things he did Rior could never see himself doing.
Things such as getting excited over mexican fast food, or coming up with dumb plans to accomplish the simplest of things, or worshipping a chicken. Granted, the chicken was adorable, but Rior could never see himself as impulsive or as street smart as this Nightmare was.
Not to mention, having such close friends like Error and Cross.
Nightmare had told Rior his own story, recognizing him as, from his perspective, a swapped Dream from another multiverse. A Dream variant in his position. Rior preferred to be described that way, instead of being alikened to the Dream in this multiverse.
A variant of himself who had willingly corrupted himself didn’t sound feasible to Rior at first, but after seeing the way this Nightmare could act as opposed to Arir, he didn’t think the omniverse as a whole would ever run out of possibilities for its subsequent multiverses.
But that was all logistics, and the Nightmare of this multiverse had claimed his head to start hurting when Rior tried to explain it.
“Makes sense you wouldn’t want to be compared to him. I mean, the guy’s a lunatic,” Nightmare responded, snapping Rior out of his thoughts.
Not to mention Nightmare’s severe bluntness when it came to others.
Rior hummed in acknowledgement, scrutinizing Nightmare’s face. He had to admit, it was much easier to discern Nightmare from Arir, seeing as Nightmare was a skeleton monster instead of a humanoid.
He moved his brown hair out of his face, his gloved hands being quick to return to his lap. Nightmare’s gaze followed his hands, resting on the golden crown that hung from his waist before flickering back up to his face.
“I haven’t told you my story, have I?”
Rior really didn’t want to. And it must have shown on his face, because Nightmare, impulsive, demanding Nightmare, spoke up.
“You don’t have to.”
And as Rior sighed in relief, his gaze caught on Nightmare’s.
… Perhaps he could get used to this.
