Things had calmed down lately, after all the shit had gone down with those whispering freaks. The communities had taken the time to lick their wounds, regather - Daryl wasn’t sure how it was all gonna fall when the dust settled, and he didn’t like wonderin’ where he was gonna fit into it all. No place really felt truly like home, so he drifted between ‘em, seeing as much of his family (as much of it that was left, anyway) when he could. The only constant was Dog, who was happily exploring the forest ahead of him. Maybe he’d flush out some game - Daryl wouldn’t mind bringing some pheasant to Alexandria.
It was just a day hunt, somethin’ to get him beyond the walls, and he never strayed too far - ready to be back if he heard the first sign of trouble. The woods were familiar to him by now - he’d spent enough time over the years to be able to find his way through with his eyes closed, and they were usually pretty empty. Most people kept to the main roads when traveling - sometimes herds like to gather together among the trees and trying to outrun ‘em was a bitch when also hopping over logs and through brush.
He was up for the challenge though.
Today was quiet though, just the faint sound of birds and the rustling of Dog through the leaves - he had his crossbow but wasn’t sure if he was even gonna end up usin’ it today. Better safe ‘n sorry though.
He was walking somewhere parallel near the main road when Dog started barking, the sound sharp and alarmed - there was somebody up ahead. It wasn’t the bark Dog got when he saw somebody he recognized and Daryl was immediately alert. Wasn’t sure he wanted to deal with any new people right now.
He crept forward, nearing a slight thicket of trees were Dog was eyeing, hackles raised as he barked. “Quiet,” he muttered, and Dog shut right up, though he stared intently.
“Come on out,” Daryl said, voice low as his crossbow rose.
