HEY okay was anyone going to tell me that the protagonist of one of my favorite podcasts (Girl in Space) was confirmed to be ace instead of just Frequently Headcanoned As Ace or was I just supposed to figure that out myself??

(From one of Werner’s comments that I tracked down on Twitter presumably yes, I was supposed to figure this out myself, but I’m so used to characters who are coded as aspec Never Actually Being Aspec [and especially with aro characters, having those characteristics completely erased in favor of a romantic subplot] that I’ve basically given up on anyone being ace/aro unless it’s explicitly stated. Don’t get me wrong, I had my hopes after the ace pilot merch went up, but I didn’t want to get too excited, especially since the last comment I’d seen from Werner on the subject was that X was still questioning her identity [which is, y’know, totally understandable and also cool]. Moral of this story is that I should apparently use Twitter, because this is the second time I’ve learned a podcast protag is ace after the creator has specifically confirmed it over there and nowhere else [Rudyard Funn of Wooden Overcoats, another excellent podcast, being the other case]. Alternative moral is to please use the word “asexual” [or, while I’m on that note, “aromantic”] in your story’s canon if you’re able to do so because if you try to write asexuality [or aromanticism] subtly it’s very easy for people to erase it—I might write up a longer post on this later, but Penny Stirling explains the reasoning pretty well over here.)

Anyways, 3/4 of my favorite audio dramas have canonically asexual characters and 2/4 also have canonically aro characters, which is a) utterly fantastic, and b) a sign that my aspec spidey senses are on point, because I started listening to each of them before any aro or ace characters had been confirmed.
