"As a matter of fact, I do. You're my best friend, the only one I've got, and not too long ago you confessed to being in love with a woman currently being held hostage by a hostage by a species from the dawn of time. As gentle and sweet as Lauri is, I do believe she would kick my ass if I didn't check in on you." Madeleine came to rest beside her friend and held out the second mug of coffee, a small smile on her face as she hoped Xandra would see the tiny thread of humour in her words.

"Besides, Ellie gave me an extra break now that the majority of the wounded are stable and resting, so I came to bug you so I don't go crazy with the paperwork in my office."

“Why would you say that?” Xandra -> Lils (meant curiously!)

"I spent my early years on Granddad's knee, listening to his stories of aliens and the strange man in a blue police box who traversed time and space. It inspired my love of history, the whole reason I chose to study archaeology and anthropology simultaneously," Lilia paused, taking a sip of lukewarm tea from the flask she brought from home, noting the curiosity of the scientist before her.

"The way people live their lives, the cultural and historical influences and ramifications fascinate me. While I may lack the social graces most anthropologists have and use for their work with the living, the dead don't mind if I'm a little blunt or get my phrasing wrong. So when I talk to the living, I like to ask how they like to be addressed, what their pronouns are, and to please not be afraid to correct me if I get things wrong. It is basic respect for my fellow humans, or at least my way of showing it, Xandra."

"Of course I did. What are bitchy blonde bombshells for if not to be an eternal pain in the arse for our brunette counterparts?" Regina couldn't help the deadpan tone of her response as she shifted slightly under the temperature-controlled unit for the avary in Xandra's lab.

"But in all honesty, Xandra, in the time it took you to get your shit together and date Lauri, I had been through four relationships and more one-night stands than I will ever admit. I mean this with great respect when I say you have the courage to face life and live your true self. Not all of us have that courage, darling."

“Ow! That fucking hurt!” Xandra -> Mads

"I did warn you! Sharp sting, did you not make the connection to incoming pain, or has your coffee not kicked in yet either?" The rueful chuckle that accompanied Madeleine's words could have been seen as harsh by outsiders, but the redhead was certain Xandra had known her long enough to see the fondness and amusement beneath it all.

"You will be glad to know that was the last one. Do you want to hang around for a bit? Your lovely lady will be turning up shortly, and I'm sure she'd appreciate the moral support. Don't worry, I'll be gentle."

Madeleine flipped the light on in her office, cigarette clamped between her lips, unlit for the moment, but that wouldn't last long with the shitstorm that was the wave of patients affected by their scaly acquaintances. It pissed her off to no end the way the whole damn situation had played out, and now she had to sit and watch good men and women recover from a nasty toxin and the burns from weapons far more advanced than their own, too.

There were still so many people unaccounted for, and Madeleine had been keeping an eye on the lists of missing personnel, one name still a constant on that list, one she fervently hoped would be found soon. For Xandra's sake, if anything. She cleared a seat for her friend and patted it gently, perched on the lip of her desk and tucked her cigarette behind her ear.

"Look, Xan, I love you, you're probably my closest friend, so I have no qualms in saying this. You've just admitted you have feelings for Lauri, and we don't know if she's alive or dead. If she comes back alive, I will personally strangle you if you don't make a fucking move with her once she is on the road to recovery."

"Holy shit, look at you! Laurie is one lucky lady!" Madeleine whistled with a proud grin as she saw her best friend dressed up to the nines for the evening, "You got everything? Phone? Keys? Wallet? Mace?"

Her questions were half serious half joking, they had both pulled the short straws for this fundraiser but Madeleine remembered what some of these rich knobs were like, especially with a few drinks in them.
