I'm not a huge gamer, but Microsoft has done a great job coming out of nowhere and taking command of this space. And it's not just about games — Netflix, ESPN and other TV content, all the Kinect stuff, etc. I think they're close to something really special.
Meanwhile, the competition is Sony, a company which has managed to tarnish its own reputation in astounding fashion due to an utter disregard for security. And Nintendo — I'm just not sure what they're doing.
Interestingly enough, both of those guys used to be the absolute dominant players in the space. Microsoft has taken more of a slow and steady approach. And it's paying off.
Not surprisingly, I still think the biggest competition for the living room could end up being iOS. With AirPlay and the forthcoming iOS device wireless mirroring, things are going to get more interesting. And it's only a matter of time until Apple TV gets its own flavor of apps...
