Conversion Corner: XCOM playable races part 4
Another favorite among XCOM aliens for me, next up we have the mutons! Though smaller than the original ones that were part of the initial invasion, the modern muton is nevertheless a mighty being, sporting a powerful muscular body, a ferocious temper, and a warrior’s spirit.
Like the other alien races encountered in the modern series, mutons were brought to earth as part of the invasion force after being rejected as candidates for the Ethereal’s host bodies. It is actually the Uber Ethereal’s description of mutons that reveals the sort of contempt that they possess for their vassal races, viewing mutons are incapable of brilliance or independence. However, despite this, mutons in Chimera Squad have proven quite capable of intelligence, social integration, and empathy and mercy, being shown capable of befriending small animals and choosing to protect other species even at the cost of their own lives. Yes, they do maintain a tribal sort of society of closely-knit familial bonds and spiritualism, but just like western civilization’s past opinions about other cultures, the Ethereals were proven wrong.
With that being said, the Elders did succeed in enhancing the brutal might of the mutons, both in their initially seen form, and in the smaller, human-hybridized form seen later. The most prominent example of this is in the “berserker” variant, hulking, skinless female mutons that have reduced intellect in favor of raw muscle mass and even greater battle fury. However, despite how worked up they can get in combat, it would be inaccurate to label them mere beasts, and are fiercely protective of their smaller kin. Indeed, female mutons in general are described among their own as being fearless, calm under pressure, and striving to bring out the best in those around them. As such, “You fight like a woman” is a high compliment to mutons.
Physically, mutons are powerful, muscular humanoids with forward-set heads on the end of thick necks that protect their spinal cords and other vascular tubing. Originally, mutons had vertical-slit mouths, but in the modern era of Chimera Squad, many have undergone gene-modding to give them more humanlike mouths, perhaps to make speaking human languages easier, as well as putting their human neighbors at ease.
As mentioned above, muton society is tribal in nature, full of ritual and bonding exercises to solidify them into one family that looks out for each other, a fact that carries over in how they bond with other races. Be strongly advised, though. A muton who’s family is threatened, or that has been worked up by injury and frustration, can be extremely dangerous.
