A Bright Opportunity || Xerxes and Nate
All week, he's thought of this moment. As he was at his current job, he worked without complaint; though it was really no different from how he normally worked. However, his strides were more confident, and one could tell that there was an air of excitement in the way he moved and carried himself. And it was true, he was very excited.
Nathaniel asked to only work a few hours this day so he could head out to the firehouse to speak with Andy. After having helped Xerxes and Breanah prior, the former encouraged Nate to speak with his boss about volunteering. He knew it would be cutting into his working hours dramatically, and he'd have to make a lot of changes, but he wanted to do this. He wanted this job, and he wanted to prove himself to more than just these two new, great friends that he could be more than what society had pegged him as. He was not a criminal, he was an average human being who just wanted to help and to live.
After getting home, he showered up and changed into the best clothes he had. There was only one outfit he had that didn't look worn or old, and it was this one that he wore whenever he needed to make a good impression. His hair was brushed neatly to one side, as opposed to just ruffled up with his hand as it normally was, and he even made sure to clean his shoes up. Everything was going to be as perfect as he could make it.
It was a much longer trip back into the city than he had anticipated. Of course, this all had to do with his restless nerves, since he just couldn't stop fidgeting the entire bus ride to the firehouse. Once outside the building, however, Nathaniel could feel nausea taking his body over. Maybe this was a bad idea. They'd take one look at his desperate features, the nervousness in his voice, and then... his record. This was what would hold him back for the rest of his life. He /killed/ three people according to the law, and while he knew he hadn't done it, he let them all get into that car drunk, and he wasn't sure which one was worse.
But no. Nate hadn't done all this practicing with keeping his voice steady and limiting his use of the utterance 'uh' for nothing, so he made his way inside, keeping his arms casually by his side, as opposed to the safety of his pockets, as he looked around at the others. "Hey, u-- I'm lookin' for Andy. I spoke to 'im some weeks back, just comin' around to talk to him."
"I'm bad at introductions, but if it's any consolation, I'm an expert with goodbyes."
I. Xerxes hung on to his father with his tiny fingers, refusing to let go even as his father stood up and started heading the other direction. A cry escaped his lips, the very same cry he’d emitted on that first night his father had been away. It was only until his knuckles had gone white and his fingers started to ache did Xerxes let go of his father. For the meantime, they had said goodbye. Little did the boy know it was once and for all. II. "Get your head straight, Xerxes," he whispered to himself, "it’s not like you’re going to marry her." III. "Death? Death? I laugh in the face of death. I—I— I mean, death isn’t all that scary wh—when you think a-about it. No, d-death doesn’t, uh - scare me. N—not even a little bit. I—I mean, people d-die. But life go-goes on. Th-There’s only so much I— we - can do ab-about it." IV. Being a firefighter was one hell of a job. Almost three years ago, Xerxes had been only in it for the sake of jumping into burning buildings. Between having had to stay at home with Peyton and going to school, its thrill was the only thing that kept him alive during the first few years of staying in Annapolis. However, the longer he stayed, the longer he enjoyed it. Firefighting had grown on him, almost like another limb that he wouldn’t be able to live without.
V. Xerxes ran a hand through his hair as he finally turned the music off. He kept his eyes on the radio, afraid of what he might see in Peyton. “I’m trying, okay? I’m trying to make things better!" his arms grew tense in the anger he tried so hard to control. “Do you think this is a walk in the park for me? This is hard for me too, Peyton."
VI. “I’m sorry — it’s just that inanimate objects with eyes scare me. No— don’t laugh, I’m not kidding," he watched Nicole curiously, waiting to see how she would react. “I don’t know. It’s been that way since I was a kid. Stuff like that beat the crap out of me! I mean look — those eyes are nitpicking every part of my subconscious. They’re judging me!"
