The info packet on his new wife had not even begun to prepare Loki for the reality of meeting her. ...him? Shane. He was still convinced that there had either been some critical error in the spousal allocation system, or that the universe had simply decided it was no where near finished playing cruel tricks on him. How could their genetics possibly be deemed an optimal match? Surely, even in spite of the nation’s population crisis, there must be some exceptions to viable candidates?
‘This would have never happened to Thor,’ Loki grit his teeth behind the thin pressed line of his lips. Wondering how in hell his family was actually going to react when they met... Shane. His father had lectured him about ‘every citizen being important to the future of the nation,’ when Loki had expressed concerns over the info packet, but what would he really think once he got to know his new ‘daughter’-in-law? Would he stick to his ‘We must set an example to the country,’ political spiel then?
It wasn’t as though there was no logic to the match. They were both the children of well known and respected military figures, though of a markedly different flavor. Loki’s side wielded old money and political influence as well as a history of high rank. Shane hailed from a Hero of the People, and that blue collar roughness chafed at Loki’s finer sensibilities. Still... he’d have been making the same arguments as his father not long ago, so he’d better try to make a go of it before doing anything rash.
And they’d been given a generous opportunity for a good start. A veranda state room on a luxury cruise. The setting was romantic, the close quarters very intimate. And whatever other concerns Loki might have, there was certainly something alluring about Shane. Frightening, but...
He tried to relax, sipping at a gin and tonic as he looked out over the waves, waiting for Shane to finish dressing for dinner. Loki half expected his new partner to come out wearing a tuxedo, just to clash with Loki’s own finely tailored suit. He felt like he was back in middle school, waiting for his faculty designated date for the spring formal. He just prayed tonight went better...
