Xombi house ad (circa June 1995)
The comic is called Xombi and no I can’t explain what on earth this is
Of the original Milestone Media lineup, the only ones I’ve read some of are “Static”, “Icon”, “Hardware”, and “Blood Syndicate.”
However, one I was always aware of was “Xombi”. But I didn’t know what it was about until now, reading through this lovely Milestone compendium I got for my birthday.
I was going in blind, only thing I kind of knew was that the guy was maybe immortal?
Yeah, that’s kind of the premise, but that’s the most normal thing about this comic so far?
All of the aforementioned non-Xombi comics are based squarely in sci-fi. Icon is an alien, Hardware is a tech genius, Static and Blood Syndicate were created by experimental tear gas.
Even Xombi is the way he is because of nanomachines he was developing.
So why is our guy getting rescued by a rabbi with some homemade golems? Why is he now allied with “Catholic Girl” and “Nun of the Above”?
Obviously superhero worlds do some wild stuff and magic is not off the table, but after the first four intros, Xombi took a bit of a flying leap into magic with a heavy dose of real religions.
Honestly? I’m here for it. Milestone was about uplifting minority voices and pushing boundaries and a nun whose punderful codename is “Nun of The Above” kind of slaps and I wish I came up with it myself.
And this is a rare one not written by the man myth legend Dwayne McDuffie. One John Rozum is responsible for this funky corner of the Dakota-verse.
Oh oh oh, I just got to the precursors of the apocalypse. They were called the Stableboys of the apocalypse before they were officially announced as precursors.
Dispute, Symptom, Entropy, and The Barrenness
these guys are the War, Pestilence, Death, and Famine we have at home.
Xombi comic covers are funny because sometimes they draw him super buff and he has blood all over his chest and he's supposed to look super badass and then you open the comic and it's like "this is David a hapless victim of science and magic, having the worst day ever for the 34th day in a row"
