It called out to him again, that voice, the lingering feeling that sat in his heart their entire journey.
His body began to feel lighter; as if he was flying. But, where? He was doing something important just now, right? His body ached and his mind felt shattered alongside his heart. This feeling wouldn't shake off, it would cling to him like an insect or parasite, sucking away at his sanity until all that was left was a shell, screaming, crying.
With a quiet moan he awoke in his bed, but something felt off. Groaning quietly as he got up he looked around in the darkness as it must of been late at night. His door creaking open quietly as a small voice called out to him.
Before he could question it a light began to shine as they held a candle, showing their face. It took him a moment but, this didn't make sense, it looked like her; yet she was so young.
The small voice squeaked out with a sniffle.
"I had a bad dream again, can I..sleep with you? I'm kinda scared."
Staring at them he'd nod, shuffling over some to pull over his covers.
Hearing his answer she'd grin happily, wiping the few tears that stained her cheeks. Placing the candle on a nearby desk Aqua blew it out before climbing into bed with him, immediately nuzzling into her friends arm.
"Thanks Terra..sorry for being such a baby, but the monsters might come and, I'm scared. I'll protect you from the monsters some day too! When we both become Keyblade Masters, we'll always protect each other."
Aqua's voice still sounding small, the familiar tone that stuck in his mind for so many years. At the last moment sounded, older, more mature and the figure next to him felt larger. Arms wrapped tightly around her waist as Terra began to choke up.
"I know you will, Aqua, we'll always protect each other."
Bit by bit his grip loosened, his body feeling light and the feeling of flight returning to him. Waking again, Terra found himself out of breath on his knees, was his Keyblade summoned? It was never this heavy before.
"Come on Terra! You can do better than that can't you?"
Staring across the way there she was again, it was Aqua, he was sure of it. But why was she so small? How were they both younger; as these thoughts lingered something inside him began to spill out; he was angry, annoyed, he wanted to win.
His voice boomed out, darkness spilling out from his as a blast shot forth from his Keyblade, nearly missing Aqua whom screamed and rolled out of the way.
"Wha-..no!..Aqua, I'm sorry! Please don't tell Master Eraqus, I-.."
Reaching out a hand to them as she sat on the floor, frightened at the sight of her friend.
"..You promised, Terra..you promised you wouldn't let it win."
Dropping his Keyblade the young male could only stare in confusion as Aqua suddenly pounced on him, looming over with tears pouring down her cheeks, as they dripped on his face Terra felt his mind fluttering again.
"Come back Terra, please, come back-..you promised you wouldn't let that side of you win..
We both aren't masters yet, don't go!...Terra!!"
He wanted to speak, to say something, but that same feeling came back to him even stronger then before. Finally, he awoke, his body continued to ache and Aqua was still with him, holding him.
Looking down at his hands he saw they were dripping with blood, who's was it? It couldn't of been Aqua's and Ven, he was no where to be found. Weakly he'd tilt his head forward to see a gaping hole in his chest.
It went through him, their former Master's Keyblade. He got in the way, to protect his friend. To keep his promise they made so long ago, that's what happened.
Keep her safe from the monsters and the darkness, from yourself. Then sleep, you kept your promise dear prince.
"Terra?..Terra!!, you promised-..."
