Wednesday, January 26: Xysma, “We Just Came Inside”
Xysma lived a few different lives throughout their roughly 15-year existence, with Lotto arguably representing the apex of their stoner phase. “We Just Came Inside” felt like a world away from the grindcore and death metal of their first couple records, but its swagger and groove still sounded organic, and it wasn’t at all incidental that Xysma maintained a mostly stable lineup the whole time. The track had the crunch and bite one might associate with grindcore, but Janitor Muurinen growled and howled more than snarled, and he definitely sounded like he was much more interested in getting that booty than dissecting cadavers. Basically, “We Just Came Inside” was just a whole mess of fun that coincided with the brief ascendance of Kyuss and basically existed as a Finnish counterpart. At the same time, as multiple stoner acts proved, the sustainability of this approach was questionable, which likely explained why Xysma pivoted again, this time to a poppier sound, on their next and ultimately final record.
