Yahoo Axis: The New "Web Browser"
I didn't judge it before I tried it. I judged it five minutes after it installed, because as it turns out, that's all I needed.
This isn't a browser, first of all, it's an applet. It installs as a browser on apple devices (I didn't see an android option) and it installs as apluginfor Firefox. I liked the sound of axis, the video intrigued me: A home page that resembles a cross-internet newsfeed? I like it. An integrated search with live updates and trending topics? I can get behind that.
That being said, it's just incredibly poorly executed.
I created an account, and tried it out. It loads slowly, if at all, on most websites. It's difficult to find. You're required to log in after each time you close the browser, and it provides you with recommended Yahoo bookmarks. It's clunky, and honestly, I have bookmarks and a search bar already. If Yahoo wanted to do this right, they should have focused far less on the mobile interface. Mobile internet use is huge, sure, but it's integral to a process of development to focus on the most important aspect of your user experience: setup and the PC base.
Yahoo took ideas that already exist, and tried to change them, without the wear-with-all to actually create their own experience.
No I don't want a reiteration of my current plugins to exist ALONGSIDE them.
Poorly executed idea that had some potential, but ended up clunky, unoriginal, and wasted the time of my life I spent trying it.
Overall, I don't hate it. I just find it superfluous and unnecessary, at least for the PC. I don't have an opinion on the mobile version because, well frankly, I don't want it. I've got Flipboard for that. This isn't innovation, it's copycatting at its finest.
Had a different experience? I'd love to hear your opinions.
