I hate to be a bother, but I’m new to the jjba fandom and I don’t know much about in-fandom controversy. Why don’t you support herzspalter and hajnarus? What did they do?

Okay, so normally I don’t discuss stuff like this on my blog, but this point was brought up on the post on the first three minutes of the movie and I actually think it’s worth discussing. I don’t bring this up to so much defend myself as much as I just think it’s an interesting topic.

I didn’t initially wanna touch on the issue of racism cause I don’t feel like I’m educated enough to discuss that, but here’s my attempt to discuss that through my story-focused lens.

Now the more I reread OP’s post, the more I do notice a lot of concerns of the Knuckles tribe - the only obviously Native/Meso-coded species - being portrayed as unnecessarily agro and combative, and I was just focused on all the Chaos junk at the time, so, pfft, yeah, I’m just an oblivious dink there. 

But I really do think the writers are going in a more thoughtful direction with it, on multiple levels.

Before we start getting into the nitty gritty and specific details, I do think, in terms of the passage from the book, it’s important to think about who’s the one thinking about the echidnas and describing them: Sonic. Someone with a VERY distinct bias. Yes, the narration’s from a third-person perspective, but this is also during the scene where Sonic’s personally looking back on it, possibly recalling how Longclaw described them too; we’re in his head, so to speak.

He’s looking back on it with a lot of anger and bitterness because these people chased him down as a baby and a child and took his mother-figure away from him, all for the sake of power. He’s a bitter teenager.

Keeping that in mind, let’s think back to the original games. As a game, this was just this one tribe - as far as we knew - just looking for power to defend themselves, or seek conquest, against their enemies, and swarmed the altar of the Master Emerald for the Chaos Emeralds. At the time, it was just one corrupt Chieftain looking for power, but by Sonic’s time, they’ve all been wiped out.

But the book makes clear that this is multiple “warlords” - quotations pending confirmation, considering Sonic’s bias - in a massive, thriving civilization now. And when you’re dealing with a huge civilization and a thriving culture, you can’t treat it homogeneously like that. And perhaps in the hands of lesser writers, the way they’re currently being portrayed might be rise for concern. 

Me personally, though, I trust them to understand that the echidnas are very Native/Meso-coded and treat the coded-culture with respect moving forward once they get to that aspect of the story. I don’t think the issue is so much how the echidnas are portrayed as much as how Sonic perceives them because of his own baggage.

So in the echidnian culture, based on how the writers handled the movie, I do think they would approach the situation with the echidnas respectfully and delicately in the end. It’s probably going to be a bit more nuanced and personable, in the end. 

After all, you do have Knuckles to think about!

But that’s all just a theory. A Film Theory!

If the other members of the cast were humans-turned-therics, what would they become and why?

Oh this is a good question! :D

Meadow has incredibly high magic potential (even though the elders feared his situation would dampen that) so he would likely also become a highly-magical creature with innate magic itself, like a unicorn.

Benji has never had the inclination toward any magic. Had he been human, born into a human family, he would fall somewhere in the middle (probably around reptile-level) and I could see him being something agile, though relatively docile and without venom. Possibly an iguana.

Ptery, no question, would become the only phoenix theric ever, due to their high magic potential and extreme vanity. Nothing else would do. (And never mind that phoenixes are an extinct species of sapient people. Ptery would somehow find a way.)

Where did therics come from? Did one of the gods create them, were they the result of a rogue sorcerer like banshees were, what? And do you know who the first therics were?

Who are your favorite (musical) artists, and why?

Oh, but there’s all kinds, aren’t there? I’ve been inspired by so many, it’s hard to list them all here. But I suppose I can introduce you to a few!

Kintokk: One of my first loves. A classical group my father used to listen to when he worked. Of course, my father and I don’t always agree on everything. Or... Anything, really. But with music we share a common bond. Kintokk was unique in that they used a lot of drums in a time when strings were more prevalent. I even got Meadow to like them because of that!

The Arken Aur: I think more than anything, this rock group inspired the four of us to form our own quartet. Meadow will claim it’s his idea, of course. He always does. I remember Luka listening to the Arken Aur on her terminal as she worked once, and they had this complicated sound... I can’t explain it, except that I was enraptured. Luka sent me all the music she had, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Mellow Spot Forte: This is a troll group. Rare, for beings who love music so much! And their names are Mellow, Spot, and Forte! They’ve a classical sound with lyrics, sort of like a stage production but with what I’d call value. There’s something behind the music that makes it timeless. And even better, I can sing along to it. Except the one song. You know the one. It’s twenty-six minutes long and it’s got no chorus at all, and it doesn’t rhyme. One day I’ll memorize it, I swear!

And I’m sure I’ve spoken about my love of musical theatre before, which means there’s all sorts of productions I love. Before I grew up, my father and I used to attend musical theatre all the time, though now that I think about it, I’m almost certain it was a method he used to placate me or keep me quiet. Still, if you need a suggestion or two, my favorites are A Season for Fauns and Bears. The latter’s a little odd, but the music is stand-up.
