Why Is Jellal The Only One Not Allowed To Be A Character?
Honestly I’ve ruminated over this more than I expected to over the past few weeks, and I’ve tried to stay neutral, but I keep arriving at the same conclusion—
I don’t know why, but now every time I actually try to think on Crime Sorcière and Jellal’s involvement, I seriously am not happy with the ambiguity of the narrative’s stance on what he did and did not do at the Tower.
Because everything that follows after just feels outright overkill if he personally had no hand in any of it and was truly just a ‘vessel’.
Because you’re telling me the child who got mind-broken and manipulated at his lowest point; who then lost the entirety of his youth being a vessel and pawn for someone else’s obsession; who was then left for dead after he became redundant; who was then arrested on sight when found with amnesia for crimes he did not know but then is revealed it wasn’t him; and then is taken away to never be seen again—is then broken out by one of the direct perpetrators of his ruin and basically it’s like, “Let’s atone and hunt down Zeref.”
…”Let’s”?
….
I’m sorry, I need to pause.
Zeref—the one he hated at his most vulnerable and raw moment in his life?
Zeref—the one whose name his life was ruined over?
Zeref—the one in whose name he was abused?
Zeref—the one he has years and years of trauma tied to because he was supposedly acting in his name—but never actually was?
That Zeref?
God, I hate being so pointed, but I feel like this is the only way I can get across my concern about him.
Because I just can’t stop questioning now:
Why should he need to atone or be made responsible for this journey as if it was always his personal choice?
This is what I mean by the story not being clear about where he stands. Because if he truly was the all ‘sinless’ sinner that the narrative tries to push every now and then—then him carrying the burden of his perpetrator’s redemption is absurdly unbalanced.
Sure, Ultear wants to repent and she feels guilt, but if Jellal truly had no hand at all in what happened in the Tower or the madness he succumbed to, why is he then being a vehicle for her guilt?
Why is the victim being used as part of the mechanism of the perpetrator’s redemption?
It’s another chain on him, another misplaced weight he has to shoulder alone. Because sure, she gets fulfilment, but what the hell is his role in this if he truly had no blame?
Charity?
I’m sorry, I just can’t anymore.
In order for Crime Sorcière to make sense and Jellal’s involvement to make sense, he has to be accountable to a sufficient degree alongside those he’s with, because otherwise he’s not just misplaced—he’s the most mistreated person in the entire group and no one seems to challenge that.
Because I’m sure no other character would be willing to go through persecution or humiliation or have a literal death sentence hanging over their head just for the sake of keeping peace or trying to forgive and understand the other side.
Nor should they either.
Controversial, but I don’t like how Jellal’s humility and altruism are praised more than they are seen as erosive to himself. It’s kind, it’s forgiving—but to what extent can it be maintained, and what effect does it have on him?
So he’s meant to throw his life away because of the consequences of other people’s emotions?
And then on top of that be made to feel responsible for it?
No.
No.
That’s grossly unfair, and if that is the case then the narrative never stopped being cruel to him, it only stopped highlighting the imbalance.
Crime Sorcière is beautiful in theory, but if each person involved does not hold similar weight, then something so transformative—becomes void.
Because what the hell is being atoned for or redeemed if not truly by yourself?
If Jellal was truly just a victim and vessel, then Crime Sorcière ceases to be a redemption story and becomes a story of a victim continuing to pay for other people’s sins.
Redemption is a personal change. It’s a reckoning. Something that can only happen when in the wrong.
And I know I circle this point a lot, but truly Jellal has to be accountable for the Tower of Heaven to make sense. Not just as a vessel. Not for the story to push it onto someone else’s doing.
It has to be him.
His thoughts.
His drive.
His ambition.
His downfall.
Not just a passenger in someone else’s.
Otherwise it doesn’t make sense, and I just can’t see it otherwise.
It also makes Ultear’s proximity to Jellal incredibly uncomfortable for me. Sure, she means well, but she genuinely has no right to try and make amends through him at his cost.
Though he was broken out of prison, that was yet another decision made outside of his autonomy, another path he was pulled onto that would weigh on him most despite not being his choice.
Because whilst Ultear was a co-conspirator, who is it the Council seemed to remember most as a criminal?
Who was the face of betrayal?
Who immediately invoked disdain?
It’s not her.
It’s him.
And who would the prison break weigh on most?
She assisted, but it’s him they want.
Him the outrage is towards.
And sure she feels guilty for all she has done—
But guilt does not absolve consequence.
And such consequence feels beyond measure to pay for a man who literally lost everything.
At the hands of many abusers; she was one of them.
Troubled, yes.
But it’s abuse no matter how you see it.
Abuse and exploitation.
The name is severe, but so is what she done to him.
And it’s not the kind that could simply be forgotten or worked through. Rather, it has become so entangled in his being that it’s now his meaning of life.
I don’t know.
It just feels too heavy to process if he truly is just a victim, and yet this man who is so intent on justice ends up committing the biggest injustice to himself.
That’s why I just can’t stay neutral on the matter anymore.
I really have tried.
But the discrepancy is glaring.
The loss is exponentially worse on one side than the others, and I can’t look away from that.
I know I’ve said a lot, but I guess what I am trying to say is:
The story wants both “Jellal was responsible but not really” and “Jellal must seek redemption,” when those ideas are not just contradictory—they are irreconcilable.
And for a story that puts so much responsibility on his atonement, it’s absurd that it doesn’t even seem sure of his place in it before demanding it from him.
I know I’m passionate about this, but truly just please try and put any other character in this frame and see how uncomfortable it is.
It’s not that I solely care whether he was responsible or not. It’s that if he wasn’t, then the suffering, punishment, and redemption narrative surrounding him become profoundly unfair.
I just can’t understand why this level of injustice and misery seems reserved for him alone.
And if it’s all for the sake of making the story work, then why is he the only one not allowed to be a character?
Or is that all he’s meant to be?
A sponge for the misery the narrative has no place for, but still needs somewhere to land?
That’s why I can’t wholeheartedly praise him for this ‘nobility’ when it comes at the price of his detriment.
And this is why I can’t be okay with the narrative being ambiguous about his actions. To make sense of all the cruelty that follows in his life, he had to have been cruel himself at some point.
Otherwise it just doesn’t work.
It just doesn’t.
Sorry for the spiral.
It’s just been bothering me quite a bit.
Has anyone else ever felt this way about Jellal’s arc? Or did this post open up a different way of looking at it?
There was such a rude woman at work today!!! She saw my “They/Them” pronoun pin and said “Oh, what, are you plural?”
A little shocked I said, “Oh, um, no.”
Then she started ranting at me for not using Xe/Xem as my pronoun, and when I told her that pronoun wasn’t really for me in part because I feel the grammar of they/them is slightly more intuitive she said, “Well, it’s hard for people like me because they/them is plural. Grammar is fluid and changing, so you should tell people to use xe/xem!”
I was quite flustered at this point, but I was able to respond with, “But if grammar is fluid, then can’t they/them come to represent singular, too?”
That finally got her to stop and go, “Oh...I guess.” and then she left because my coworker finished ringing her up.
I just -I don’t mind explaining my gender identity to people who don’t understand, but it’s so rude to start berating someone (especially someone who’s working behind an info desk/post office combo and can’t leave) because you don’t like the pronouns they use!
ALSO ALSO ALSO: FUCK YOU “THEY/THEM IS PLURAL” People use they/them singularly all the time!!
EDIT: SHE CAME BACK WHILE I WAS TYPING THIS POST and continued to lecture me about the need for new words like xe/xem as I was ringing up her packages! If you like those pronouns so much, use them yourself!!! (I know she doesn’t because she didn’t know how to pronounce or conjugate them and kept asking me how to. Like maybe, MAYBE, that confusion is part of the reason I don’t use them??????????)
There’s something that bothers me but I don’t usually say anything about it because peace is usually the better option. But sometimes people go too far and you just have to say something.
So I was on Reddit, browsing Jerza posts and then I came across a post which I had to double take for when I actually saw what was written.
Someone making a joke about Jellal’s exchange with Erza at the end of Tartaros.
Annoying but nothing new.
But then I actually clicked on the image.
And I was lowkey speechless.
Like I genuinely felt sick reading this.
Erza is here holding space for her trauma, trembling whilst reliving the most darkest parts of her entire life. About being chained up, being humiliated, stripped naked, being put through excruciating torture, reduced to a less than a human being and getting whiplash from her childhood memories.
And some sick person wrote “lmao. thug it out.” as a response?
As Jellal’s response?
I’m sorry but what the actual…
I genuinely have no words to describe how repulsive this is.
What kind of joke is this? What’s the funny bit here? Reducing Erza’s trauma to fit in your punchline or what? The fact a woman is breaking and you want to use the man who loves her as meme material to mock her?
This is absolutely disgusting and I can’t believe anyone actually is so cruel to do this to Erza.
Irrelevant if this was meant to be a one off joke or what. This is legit inhumane and I don’t believe for one second anyone who can make a remark like this about a character’s suffering actually cares about them.
Because if you can read that scene and this is the edit you make? You don’t care about Erza. You don’t care about Jellal. You care about engagement at someone else’s expense.
Also just to clear about what this scene actually was:
Jellal didn’t “dip” on Erza.
If people had been paying attention they would realise, Jellal COULDN’T stay with Erza, their circumstances WOULDN’T permit. He’s a literal FUGITIVE.
I wonder if the OP forgot that.
So for him to stay with Erza even for a second longer than he should is actually more likely to endanger her AGAIN or even sign her death sentence.
But I’m guessing OP didn’t want to pay attention to the context because they were too busy trying to land a cheap shot.
Which doesn’t even land because you know why?
OP just showed that they care less about Erza’s pain and trauma than Jellal CANONICALLY did.
And Jellal didn’t even KNOW what she went through. He saw she was upset and tried to comfort her.
He said something to try and placate her.
Because that’s what you do when you love and care about someone.
Whilst whoever this OP was, turned her into a punchline.
The man that OP tried to mock and meme?
Treated Erza more humanely and with respect than this OP did.
I’m sorry I’m just so disgusted.
Like fine, don’t like what Jellal said, don’t even like Jellal as a character or respect him if you really can’t, but don’t try and act your trash OOC take is valid criticism when it’s nothing but a low blow.
Don’t say you care about them, Jellal, Erza or literally anyone, when you’re willing to reduce them to nothing but a punchline and thrive off their mockery for your own benefit.
Sorry guys.
It really was so appalling.
I had to get this off my chest.
Simon Mikazuchi: The Most Over-glazed Side Character in Fairy Tail
I don’t usually do posts like this, and I know I am going to sound like such a b-tch for saying this but like f-ck it.
I don’t get the love for Simon. Like at all.
And whilst I am critical, I don’t usually hate characters. But Simon, he’s one of those few who are the exceptions.
And before you think so, no it’s got to do with the fact that I like Jellal.
It’s because of the emotional weight Simon gets is completely out of proportion to who he was and what he actually did.
Might sound callous, but like—
Yeah, he died?
And?
What else did he do?
Nothing is notable about him except negativity and passivity.
Examples?
He was jealous of Jellal when they were literal enslaved kids
Meanwhile, Jellal probably didn’t even notice because—idk—he was focused on surviving.
He got his face rearranged—literally lost his jaw and his bloody eye—all because he couldn’t wait to until after an ongoing rebellion to be petty about a crush. Like bro—you are in the midst of a f-cking war, people can die if you stop fighting now, your girl you like could be one of them. WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES.
And it’s not a matter about him being a kid, or like teehee a crush. He lacks like perspective period. All of this is happening outside of him and he cares if Erza has crush on Jellal?
Not the safety of his ‘friends’. Not the fact that Grandpa Rob just died (I believe he did by then). Not the fact that if they get captured it’s possible they might be killed for it.
But no.
It’s his crush that’s of importance now.
How tone deaf—
And on that point, did he actually care about anyone other than Erza???
Erza fought for all the little kids. Jellal wanted freedom for everyone.
What did Simon do? Sit next to trauma and stew about his feelings. Like I get it not everyone is going to be a profound like that, but why is everyone acting like he did something.
He literally did nothing.
Then when Erza tries to save Jellal—who let’s remember is being tortured—what does Simon say?
“Do you like him or something?”
HELLO??? I CANNOT.
Someone you know is possibly dying and that’s your response??? Excuse me? (I’m sorry I won’t say this guy is Jellal’s friend because he is not.)
This isn’t love. Not in any form. It’s insecurity cosplaying as concern.
And then let’s take in consideration that Erza was tortured to the point that she lost her eye. And now Jellal is in that same space and hasn’t been seen since. A good friend would be like “we need to get there quickly.”
They would haste on his behalf.
But Simon doesn’t haste.
He hates.
And you know the guilt Erza has for not getting there quick enough to save her friend. You think Simon stalling her doesn’t like lowkey play into that?
But yeah let’s go on about how great Simon is.
And then he dies. He dies in a scene that was never about him in the first place—just to add extra trauma to Erza.
Even as he dies, what does he say?
“I’ve always loved you.”
Not : “tell the others i’m sorry.”
Not : “save him.” (Let’s be real at this point I don’t think he cared if Jellal was saved or not)
Just : “Remember me.”
All whilst coated in that same insecurity, self absorption and narcissism he’s had as a child.
He’s not thinking about that Erza is going through it. That she just got betrayed. Nearly sacrificed. No he just wants her to remember what he felt.
He doubted her capabilities when it came to Jellal and this confession feels like a lowkey punishment for that.
Like “Look at who you loved and what he did, but I’m the one who truly loved you.”
But does that actually read as a confession of love? No. No it does not.
It reeks of his same bitterness he’s had throughout but is being given a pedestal because he’s dying in her arms.
It wasn’t a declaration of love. It was an attempt to one up the man he couldn’t beat, even when the man was steeped in delusion and insanity.
It was the final guilt trip.
A desperate play to be the one remembered.
And I guess it worked out in his favour didn’t it? Because Simon wouldn’t be remembered out of his own relevance. He’s only remembered because of those who are actually relevant carry his name.
For all he is, his character feels off. And not in a way that’s mistaken.
He’s weird.
Icky.
Bitter.
And most importantly selfish beneath the quiet act.
He didn’t lead.
He didn’t change anything.
He didn’t save anyone.
So why does the fandom act like he’s a fallen saint?
And do you know what hurts most about this? About Simon and his connection to Jellal?
Jellal mourns Simon like a brother.
He carries the guilt of killing him so hard, it drove him suicidal. He carries Simon’s name, his memory as he mattered to him. Like he was someone who stood by him—someone who tried.
But let’s be honest here:
If the roles were reversed, would Simon have done the same?
Nothing in canon says he would’ve.
When Jellal descended—when he fell into madness—
Did Simon try to do anything to stop it? Did he try to speak to him? Even try to remind Jellal of who he was?
He didn’t step in. He didn’t even say “we need to help him.” He didn’t even try to reach him.
He just watched and then decided:
“Oh, he’s evil now.”
No protest. No struggle. No heartbreak.
Just judgment.
Maybe even contentment.
And it’s just tragic because Jellal remembers Simon with sincerity.
But Simon?
Simon never saw Jellal as a brother. He didn’t even see him as a friend. He saw him as a threat. A rival. A problem.
So it lowkey hurts to see Jellal carrying grief for this man like it’s a sacred thing—for someone who would have never carried him back.
Simon died and Jellal is mourning his name years after like he lost blood. If Jellal died? Simon would be the first one to light the pyre.
He was not noble. I’m tired of hearing people say or act like he was.
He was insecure, jealous and forgettable.
A side character who watched people suffer and only stepped in when it served his own feelings.
Simon Mikazuchi wasn’t a hero. Wasn’t even a martyr.
What he was, was a selfish opportunist—quiet, calculating and emotionally strategic.
For a better word: a snake.
Yet despite all that, he was still a walking L.
A loser from the beginning to the end.
Didn’t love Jellal. Didn’t even love Erza imo.
All he loved were his insecurities and his self pity.
And someone needed to say it.
Bruh, not Rujinu and Babyjinu being called "too vanilla"
If a ship is "too vanilla" for you, sorry to tell you but you're not trying hard enough 🥀
Meanwhile I keep thinking Babyrumi should eat Jinu alive (??
Edit: starting to believe Jinu ships in general are called "basic"... I don't get it tbh. Twt sucks really bad sometimes :///
Guys, specially fans of the games, do you think Nocturne is actually gonna make Maria a love interest for Alucard after the time skip?
I don't ship them at all, I'm actually dreading it since episode 1, BUT- it's disturbing me the amount of people I keep seeing that make comments about "Maria's new dad/grandpa" when it comes to Alucard... It feels really weird knowing they might become an item
Also they barely interacted for them to make those comments and it's obvious from the finale that Maria is crushing on him. If there's someone here who deserves to be called Maria's new dad/grandpa is Juste and Juste only imo
Quick, how do I convince people to ship Babyjinu??
Oh boy, would I have to finish that Polysaja headcanons post I had let rot in my wips???
