Part 4 of my trip to the ROM!
An epitaph for Yang Shun carved in limestone during the Tang Dynasty, sometime around 693. Yang Shun was a great Chinese general, credited with once saving the life of Empress Wu Zetian. Wu Zetian was one of the most powerful women in Chinese history. So powerful was she that she (1) changed the name of her dynasty half way through it from Tang to Zhou to reflect her presence within it and (2) she invented 12 new characters to replace 12 familiar and widely-used characters as a way to symbolize the beginning of her rule. The letters were discontinued after her death, and the old ones restored.
