This site was constructed with a specific purpose in mind - to help handicapped people travelling between Geneva and Barcelona. Handicapped people document and take pictures of the road obstacles they encounter. Together these documentations create a virtual city map that helps handicapped travelers plan a smooth journey through the often rugged city terrain. Although it doesn't sound like web art, it does bring attention to society the plight of the handicapped. It also forms a unique online community of people in a specific region who unite through their disability.

picidae.net

Formed by Swiss artists Christoph Wachter and Mathias Jud, picidae.net works to override online censorships of countries like China, Iran, and Africa. It operates by posting images of html encoded websites.  This way, it is impossible for them to get banned because it is structured with pixels, not machine readable code. This piece of web art's main purpose is to help make information accessible to people who otherwise would have no access to these banned sources.

Eva and Franco Mattes - software virus

The Duo Mattes created a software virus called biennale.py that spread around computers around the world. It worked by reproducing itself endlessly and by multiplying itself by “using the human mind and the media hysteria as its reproductive machinery” (Mattes). Their goal was to show that it a virus wasn't just a destructive program but that its existence depended on the actions of humans. It became such a serious problem that it eventually had to be eliminated by the anti virus software maker Symantec.

computer glitches by Glitchr

This follows the same concept as a previous post I made about computer glitching as art. Instead of obstructing facebook however; this artist, who goes by the name of Glitchr, exploits bugs he finds on the social media site. That way when a user clicks on certain things, the user 'unintentionally creates a series of unexpected glitches'. He turns the clean lines of Facebook into visual chaos. Developers of Facebook quickly spot these glitches, but this only inspires Glitchr more to find more glitches to exploit them and make more web art.

computer glitches by Sayuri Machima

Machima is one of many internet based artists tired of Facebook's uniform and static design. To change this she experiments with computer glitches to break up the monotony. She creates color fields of opaque blue and white that cover her profile page and obscure pieces of information such as a commenter's name. In doing this she makes her Facebook "fail at what it was made to do".

The Agony and the Ecstasy by Parker Ito

Parker Ito is a multimedia internet artist who held an art display called "The Agony and the Ecstasy" in a gallery. Even though it's not originally based on the internet, it still relates to web art because it deals with the way objects are presented in a gallery versus the way they are presented online. Ito got this idea to make artwork that was 'undocumentable' and he used reflective material in order to do this. He would spray water and paint onto this reflective material. This presented multiple unique viewing experiences based on lighting and whether the art was photographed or not.
