Today I'm a bad person because

I don't agree with dragging Yaniv publicly into the mud because he's guilty of being a predator.

I agree he should be removed from society to prevent harm, I agree that what he did was harmful.

I don't agree with people trying to do justice with their own hands, gathering with pitches and forks to punish someone they think is guilty.

Like, okay, this person being guilty is highly probable, there are evidences pointing to that, he indeed break the law many times stupidly.

What about the next person we do that to?

What if it's me?

What if it's you?

What if it's someone you care about?

How will you feel then?

This isn't justice. This is harassment disguised as justice so it can be socially accepted and encouraged.

I don't believe lashing out on criminals will ever help to decrease crime rates or help victims.

I'm not okay with this.

Via @vanilla-umbrella [original; tweets], a good opportunity to discuss screenshots-as-proof, specifically two problems with it.

1. Removal from Context

While not obvious in what is, itself, a screenshot, @yourSNisawful contains a screenshot of @kat_blaque’s tweet, not a link to it, denying the reader the original context. Without that context, she can fit the tweet into a narrative of progressives hypocritically doubting victims of sexual predators, but in reality this is a fabrication.

The actual context is Kat Blaque’s thoughts on an interview with Jessica Yaniv and Alex Jones:

In this case Google is sufficient to find the context, which you can find from the start of the thread here. What she is actually talking about isn’t doubting victims but doubting screenshots because

2. They’re Trivial to Fake

Screenshots are trivially easy to fake. If you’re criticising something in one you should provide a link to the source. If you, the reader, cannot verify the screenshots are genuine—whether the source is deliberately obfuscated or unavailable, e.g. deleted tweets or private conversations—you shouldn’t accept them as evidence, let alone proof, unless you have some other means to corroborate their contents.

What Kat Blaque is talking about here, in particular, is that faking screenshots isn’t just possible but quite common, and have been used to support transphobic conspiracies and individual attacks. When transphobes want people to believe trans people are inherently predatory, it isn’t unreasonable to doubt that screenshots of some trans person being predatory are genuine (especially someone otherwise unknown to you).

Disclaimer:

Since I know some transphobe is going to manipulate these comments: the falsifiability of screenshots is a matter of fact. Recognising and discussing isn’t a defence of Yaniv specifically (she has provided some in her defence, even) and even if screenshots in accusations of her are faked that doesn’t necessarily mean she is innocent.
