Paradise X: Heralds #1 (2001)
new video from 8h of Suzuka, Colin and Valentino (shirtless ofc) celebrating their win!
andy pettitte and mike mussina stretching before the 2001 w.s.
i watched the 2001 Budapest hungarian language single-cam proshot of Elisabeth available here from 2-7/12/25, cast and thoughts below the cut!!
Cast (as far as I could find):
Seres Ildiko(Elisabeth), Szabó P. Szilveszter (Tod), Dolhai Attila (Lucheni)
Biggest thing about this recording (not production) was the recording quality. it was a single cam proshot from 2001 and came with all the hallmarks of it. video quality was only 360, audio mixing wasn't great (people got drowned out a lot), and the visual and audio both warped a few times. you need to listen to this with both earbuds in (if you're listening on earbuds).
standard Hungarian blocking set design etc.
Some numbers were sped up or slowed down. wie du and sie passt nicht were sped up and der schleier fällt was slowed down, all noticeably. there were probably others but I don't remember them off the top of my head.
she just casually fell into a split during wie du. iconic. this sisi (series ildiko) seemed too old for the younger parts in the opening sequence.
I liked Dolhai way better as lucheni than rudolf. from what I understand he was a sort of emergency understudy for this performance, though take that with a grain of salt. he seriously looked like antonio Banderas in Evita. like seriously. I think that was the inspiration.
this Sophie's (I wish I had a better cast list but idk who she was I'm sorry) hair reminded me too much of the women who used to go to my church when I was like ten for me to take her seriously.
really enthusiastic oboe at the beginning of so wie man plant und denkt. I liked the backing but it drowned dolhai out and he got off. neat ensemble blocking when fj takes sisi's hand.
simple blocking for nichts ist schwer, I liked it. the music did a little added lyricless interlude for them to get on this thing where they didn't do anything but sing the last verse, and it felt like they could've sung it on the ground. audio glitched :(.
the bells before alle fragen were confusing. kids held her train and her dress was almost designed to completely cover her. neat ideas and allusions there.
the costumes couldn't decide what decade it was; some were the full hoop skirts of the 50s, some way later into the bussels of the 70s and 80s, some servant costumes were full eighteenth century.
typical hungarian wedding dance, circle over here.,circle over there. here I write: "this was not the age of the Viennese waltz for you to just do circles around the living room. I want billowing skirts."
szabó opened der letzte tanz by dancing with Elisabeth. sang the first verse that way. it was interesting. standard arrangement. he sang the hell out of it (I mean I expect no less from szabó). the todesengels were really distracting. I couldn't find her in the blocking (this was a recurring theme, might have to do with the single camera nature, but I also couldn't find szabó in the blocking for am deck der sinkenden welt).
I didn't like the way her hair was piled on her head. it made her face look short and her look older. it would have look better some other way, especially when she's younger, I think.
sophie reminded me of Angela lansbury. "ich möchte—" "nein" was done really well. sophie was clearly mad working up to it and when Elisabeth asked it she just snapped "NEM!" really fast and loud and short. liked it
the piano at the beginning of ich gehoer nur mir was really dense and sharp (not melodically, like. dynamically?). strong and almost classical high notes. i'm not sure if this Elisabeth was classically trained, but it felt like it. she ran around the set more during that number.
people were constantly taking pictures during die ersten vier jahre, bringing her different things to hold. first production i've seen with a parrot. her baby was passed around behind Sophie. the camera clicked like in other Hungarian prods, though at one point one of them was late.
szabó has a wonderful voice for this part. I could listen to him forever. I write "omg szilveszter" four times in my original notes.
static chairs for die froeliche apokalypse. I liked the spinning wheels more. but I liked the choreo.
I called this fj sideburns because man did he have some. he was ok. good voice, good on the lower parts. I don't remember much about him.
this Elisabeth kinda looked like Audra macdonald. stay with me.
here I write: "DEATHCHENI IS REAL AND TRUE"
I didn't really like the milch choreo. (at the time of editing I don't remember but if I wrote that I didn't like it i'll take my word for it)
the camera only focused on her during ich will dir nur sagen, only panned out at the end so I couldn't really assess the blocking. I think they used the same pose I really liked in the 2007 Budapest at the end.
there were three things on dolhai's kitsch tray.
rhythm on erzebet was weird.
RUDOLF'S FUCKING BALL WAS ALSO IN THIS PROD
nichts nichts gar nichts was really slow. it was ok. again, she seemed classically trained. I like her better older than young. audio warps again.
here I write: "this sophie's name is Sandra. she got a pedicure with her nieces last Saturday and had to wait for half an hour longer."
she just screamed maladie.
bellaria was a well placed park and bark, but this Sophie didn't really get across that she was sick/dying. I was confused as to whether she died at the end.
staging was good for die rastlosen Jahre but they walked really slowly
old age makeup was pretty well done but oddly placed. fj just randomly goes white between bellaria and die rastlosen Jahre. Elisabeth just had two stark white stripes in her hair (obv I understand the difficulty of finding a place to apply it though).
I'm pretty sure this Rudolf would've gladly spent the entire show lying on the floor. every time he fell on the floor (and he fell on the floor a lot) he stayed there for five or six lines and another cast member had to yank him up. did he just. want to chill on the floor. I respect that.
standard hungarian blocking for die Schatten. i loved how death got on his knees at the end under Rudolf like he was praising him.
here I write: "szilveszter hanging out all cunty like" I think I was talking about verschwörung?
she was totally doing a seance during wie du reprise. and accidentally summoned the ghost of her very alive father? was he just normally there?
standard Hungarian song order so hass came directly between wie du reprise and wenn ich dein spiegal waer
I always love the hungarian ensemble, especially in an eight role show
rudolf's voice was more baritenor than it was straight tenor, but I found his wenn ich dein spiegal waer pretty effective. he falls to his knees at the end in front of her and she goes down like she's about to talk to him (I love it when the sisi's pretend they're about to talk to him) but just lifts him up. she really got across that Elisabeth sees herself in him and doesn't know what to do like she didn't know what to do when it was her. it was. it was really good.
ok so they're doing the mayerling and everything's going on all normal like and then he gives death the gun and they kiss for five or six seconds and szabó just. holds the gun in the air and drops him. no gunshot noise either, so it was probably on purpose, but still weird. also something weird was going on with the blocking and choreo at the beginning of the number.
always like the mourners during totenklage. the way that their lives are completely publicized. totenklage was almost a classical aria. interestingly enough, I didn't really get her sadness across until the very end. she just shouted at him at the end of it (yk the bit where she shouts at him. well she hit full volume) and he grabbed her from behind.
I always trust a Hungarian prod to pull through on todcheni. lucheni tried to sell to death and death just looked distraught and walked off. again there were like three things on his tray.
I love their boote in der Nacht bench. it's so sweet. is she doing this up the octave? he trips and she catches him. i'm gonna die.
couldn't find death in the blocking for am deck
she just falls down and dies. no stumbling. just dies. standard Hungarian blocking for der schleier fällt, but she's on the same thing she is for rondo. recording glitches bad for on the last chord.
ultimately pretty solid. standouts were the cast and some of the blocking. not great things were the audio and visual quality (but again to be forgiven because it was. 2001).

Marxist Revolutionary Girl Hoshiko, v2 by Silent Angel (base by Beth) (2001) An incredible work of artistic and political genius. Seriously, I love ALL of Silent Angel's dolls because they have so much personality, and this is a great example. Who else would add busts of Marx and Lenin to their fashion doll?? All the clothes are nicely rendered and I love the unique palette (extremely muted for S.A.). It's a pity that Beth's original doll seems to have vanished from the web.
You can find this doll on KiSS Cafe.
