October 31, 2019 In colder weather, the saffron blossoms can take hours to fully emerge, so more often than not, I’m picking in the afternoon to give them a chance to get out of the ground all the way. You can tell by how the yellow anthers are slightly shriveled and starting to look grainy that this flower has been open for a few hours. This was picked at 5:50pm, right at the start of sunset.
