Day 108: The Anatomy of a Yoga Class
It might come as a shock that Yoga is not my favorite class to teach.
It's hard in a special way.
The main component of asana yoga is the breath, but that's not what mainstream yoga showcases. Since the birth of IG, it's been about the pose, getting 'advanced' and being skinny and flexible.
I've never seen yoga in this way.
It's raw. You feel things. It's hard to turn inward, to focus.
In classes, some people are most consumed with watching other people get into the flows. Some people are unable to keep to themselves because the idea of focusing inward seems selfish or too difficult to face.
So, it's become more of a show.
There's nothing super wrong with this; as a seasoned fit pro, I've come to accept all forms of physical movement. Anything is better than nothing, which is what the majority of people do.
If we're moving, it's good.
The real and raw comes from a flow - a matching of movement to the breath that brings you into a steady state, it almost feels unreal. What is real?
I have yoga professional friends who SCOFF loudly at the state of yoga (which is now consuming the world of Pilates, as trends go) and try to hold onto their idea of "correct" yoga. These are classes I would not take, knowing they do not allow for variations, talking, or breathing too loudly. Really.
Yoga is "for everyone" some of my fellow practitioners exclaim, but when you go to most classes, that is not the case. Most yoga in a group format cannot correctly accommodate everyone. I don't even pretend to have the answer to this issue, it's well beyond me.
I try to offer the best that I can with the tools that I possess. When I know better, I do better.
Yes, people talk in my classes. They fidget. They talk and commentate. They don't match breath to movement. They refuse to use certain tools. They don't like savasana (I have some clients who cannot do it and don't want to sit still).
I've released my expectations of what a yoga class is and choose instead to show up in the way my clients need. This takes experience, flexibility, creativity, and the ability to let go. I've restructured an entire class minutes before it started based on who shows up and the energy they bring with them.
Related: this is why I won't teach yoga for a studio that isn't my own class. They don't pay well for this kind of expertise.
