Gevin from “Youth Expressions” 20” x 30” film, 2018. - This is one of the images from my senior thesis series “Youth Expressions”. This image, along with dozens others, was not able to be shown in the gallery but I want to slowly upload them to my Instagram. More will be put on @thatjapalgirl in the future. The show is up in the Sella-Granata Gallery in Tuscaloosa, AL through the 29th. Below you can find my artist statement for the show. - Youth is universal, but the way we experience youth differs from person to person. Coming of age from adolescence to adulthood is confusing, complicated and trying in the search of self and tribe. This is no mystery as youth experience has been heavily documented in similar ways and in similar places. Past photographers have documented the lives of youths categorized within subcultures. While subcultures still exist today, they have become more complex with easy access to ideas and information. The defining characteristics of these subcultures have started to change and evolve. As a result, we have access to images of specific subcultures in big cities, but none of the everyday young person. Especially in the South. Youth Expressions is a series of images featuring youth who are coming of age in Birmingham, Alabama. Change happening in Birmingham is evident in almost every aspect of the city, but most excitingly in the youth. The lines between certain groups are blurring through the borrowing of fashion, hairstyles, traditions and mannerisms that we appropriate from each other. Youth Expressions discloses the dissolving of these borders. - #art #film #filmisnotdead #youthexpressions (at Sella-Granata Art Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqxmRv6AXMf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=h1j2nrkpahcm
