Congratulations, your Nation thanks you.
The countryside outside of the train was beautiful. Picturesque in a way. But Charlee can't find peace in it. She could barely focus on the call of the conductor over the speaker, letting the passenger know they would be arriving soon, she was so wrapped up in her own thoughts.
She was traveling to her new city, to start her new life, with her new job, and her new husband. All of which she had never seen before.
After the great crisis several decades ago, before she was born, that wiped out so many people the nation had to go through a major changes. Work and cities had to be condensed. Conservation measures had to be taken. And, the most radial of all, was rebuilding the population.
It was decided that they would make a better nation. A healthier nation. So spouses were paired based on their genetic compatibility, rather than personality, to produce the best offspring. There had been outrage, at first. But as more children were being born, and healthy enough to withstand the plague that gripped the nation, the practice was accepted as the norm.
Charlee had just recently completed her education in early childhood education and how to be a good housewife. It was actually called Spousal Support Training, but basically it was housewife/mother training. But now that she was finished with her studies, receiving fairly high marks across the board, she was packed up and moved to her match's home town. But despite her high marks Charlee was terrified that she wouldn't be good enough.
What if Kol didn't like her? What if he didn't find her acceptable? What if, despite the tests, she couldn't give him children? Or she couldn't have as many children as her mother? Her mother had five children, four boys and her, and was held in high esteem and took great pride in that.
The train felt like it was slowing and pulling into the station, the harsh final breaks jarring Charlee out of her thoughts. Nerves or not, she got caught up in the shuffle of the exiting passengers and grabbed her carry on bag along with the file on her new match and home and life. She hoped Kol was at least here to retrieve her.
