i’m just gently gonna place this here .

yuichiro is clever , but he’s not book smart at all . it’s shown over and over again throughout the series that he knows little to nothing about things most teenagers would know . he doesn’t know history . he can read and write in latin . he can speak japanese . however , he doesn’t know kanji and he spells things out phonetically . he’s never really gone to school ! so his lack of knowledge is understandable . as far as the manga has revealed , he’s only gone to school when guren decides to punish him at the beginning of the series . so , it can be assumed that he’s gone intermittently throughout the four years guren’s watched over him .

but he’s very good with riddles . he can solve problems and make intellectual leaps --- he caught asuramaru in a lie at least one time . he isn’t easily fooled into believing things ; this is why asuramaru can never trick him into giving up his body . he allows himself to be led on by his friends . he plays the idiot card on purpose . he doesn’t bother learning the names of people he doesn’t care for , but he’s observant of his surroundings . 

he allows people to assume things about him , not because it works towards some end goal , but because he doesn’t care if people think little of him . he’ll never know how to do algebra , but he can survive in a fight , and as asuramaru mentioned , he’d probably do even better than he already does if only he’d keep his emotions separate from his life .

yu : what kinds of things are you remembering ? asuramaru : hmmm , that i think i like that sky . yu : the sky is pretty , yeah . asuramaru : and that i think i like the sun . yu : the sun is bright and shiny , yeah . asuramaru : you’re mocking me , aren’t you ? yu : huh ? why would i ?

in conclusion , never expect much out of yu when he opens his mouth . he tries !!! ... and fails .

i mentioned once before that yuichiro chose to give up his life for guren   ( multiple times )   but it was also for guren that he first used the trumpet of the second seraph . he gave up his humanity all while saying ,   “ i don’t mind as long as i can protect my family . ”

it was also guren that stopped the progression of the demonic possession that started directly after this decision . guren is also the one guiding yu in using the seraph’s strength . i think it has less to do with guren wanting to use him as a tool  ( although that’s part of the reason ) , but more that he realizes that yu won’t stop destroying himself to avoid feeling hurt &. abandoned again . he’s giving him the ability to control the seraph &. in turn have the strength to protect everyone around him . i also don’t think it’s a lie when guren tells mika that he’s trying to save yu . 

so , on that note , i’m going to smother myself because i have so many feelings about this dysfunctional family relationship . like , the relationship between mika &. yu as well as yu &. his friends are all important . but yu throws himself away time &. time again for guren . aslkfj .

this is the moment that yuichiro gives up the idea of relying on other people . he’s lost so much in his short life that he realizes he can’t go through losing another person . even if it means not being able to work with his friends anymore , even if it means getting himself killed or giving up his humanity , he’d rather those options than to lose the person that’s come closest to being an actual parental figure . all he’s ever wanted was a family &. to be loved ; guren’s given him that , in his own harsh ways .

also , yuichiro is blunt and he bulldozes his way through all parts of his life . he does what he wants and he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks . the occasions where he stops to listen to someone else are rare and far between . he isn’t respectful . he won’t use titles or honorifics . honestly , he might not even understand them , considering the majority of his life was spent as an experiment or in a city where japanese was not spoken . BUT ! even if he does understand honorifics , he wouldn’t use them . he thinks they’re a pointless token of respect .

he is not delicate or sensitive towards people . he’s annoyed easily . he’s grown up in a world where even the strong can die . he doesn’t believe in coddling people . he is angry constantly ; he’s learned to hide it behind smiles and stupid antics , but he’s still angry . and he still feels the crushing weight of guilt from letting his family die . it’s no wonder he goes to such lengths to protect his new family . he doesn’t understand people that don’t fight . he looks at the civilians the army protects and he doesn’t understand . he looks down on them a little bit . this is why he hated going to school . how could he possibly get along with people that don’t want to put their lives on the line to protect themselves and the rest of humanity ?

i honestly love how yu is not the strong stoic type that refuses to admit when he hurts , &. even exaggerates by saying ouch when someone flicks or slaps the back of his head . he complains about things hurting when they shouldn’t hurt &. then complains louder when he does get hurt ( for instance , when crowley slams on the brakes in a later chapter &. yu hits his face on the seat in front of him ) .
