yu fans threats work on everyone except Chen jingshen because he is the only one to pick up on how you fan would never hurt anyone unless they're hurting someone else first. He understood his moral compass and heart of marshmallows. Yu fan cannot stand injustice and takes it upon himself to protect anyone under threat by someone more powerful, but if only he is the one being annoyed , he isn't gonna do anything. Realizing this allows Chen jingshen to boldly show up infront of Yu fan even when he threatens him multiple times, Chen jingshen is undeterred because he knows he is under no danger. This boy will not hurt him.

Yu Fan the Flames, Yu get Burned

Wacky Yu Fan, who is basically Wu’s Kong Rong without the Kong, is once again saying mean things about me behind my back. I should really execute him, but I have shown remarkable mercy so far. I just send him 10 miles South every time he does this. Eventually I’m going to run out of places South to send him and he’ll fall off the planet!

What can you tell me about Yu Fan?

He was a brilliant asshole.

Yu Fan was from Kuaiji. His family had a tradition of government service, but they were also known as the foremost scholars of their home region. When Wang Lang took over Kuaiji, Yu Fan was made Officer of Merit, responsible for recommending local talents to fill the administration.

When Sun Ce attacked Kuaiji in 196, Yu Fan assisted Wang Lang in battle even though he urged Wang Lang not to fight Sun Ce. After Wang Lang was defeated at Guling, they fled to the far south of Kuaiji by sea. There, Wang Lang released Yu Fan from his service and sent him back to care for his family. Yu Fan subsequently joined Sun Ce and persuaded Wang Lang to surrender. He became one of Sun Ce’s personal advisers and helped him establish control over Kuaiji by negotiating with the local powers. In 200 he persuaded Hua Xin to surrender to Sun Ce as well.

Not long after this, Yu Fan was made Magistrate of Fuchun - the home of the Sun family. After Sun Ce’s death, Yu Fan helped maintain order. He prevented officers from leaving their posts to pay their respects to Sun Ce. He also prevented one of Sun Ce’s cousins from making a bid for inheritance. 

Cao Cao tried to steal Yu Fan away from the Sun family several times by offering him position sin the capital, but Yu Fan always declined. He did, however, maintain correspondence with Kong Rong.

While Yu Fan and Sun Ce got along, his relationship with Sun Quan wasn’t as smooth. Yu Fan often contradicted Sun Quan, and Sun Quan resented him. Although Yu Fan served him as a staff officer for a time, he was eventually transferred to Danyang because Sun Quan couldn’t stand to be around him.

Lü Meng held great respect for Yu Fan, however, and requested that he aid the campaign against Jing in 219. Yu Fan helped plan the campaign, and he persuaded Shi Ren to surrender Gong’an. So he was a significant player in the campaign’s success.

Yu Fan was always difficult to deal with, though, and he only got more unpleasant with time. He mocked the prisoner of war Yu Jin and the defector Mi Fang. He also insulted Sun Quan and Zhang Zhao. At one point, Sun Quan was drunk and became so enraged at Yu Fan that he tried to kill him and had to be restrained.

Eventually, Sun Quan had enough of Yu Fan and exiled him to Jiao province. In the south, Yu Fan extablished a school, where he gathered several hundred students. He dedicated himself entirely to his studies, producing a large body of work. He also continued to submit memorials to the Wu court with his unsolicited opinions. He died in exile in 229.

After Yu Fan’s death, Sun Quan brought his family back from exile. Because of Yu Fan’s contributions to the state and to the scholarship of the far south, the Yu family was considered one of the four greatest of Wu. Yu Fan had eleven sons, several of whom held important positions under Wu and Jin.

There’s no question that Yu Fan was brilliant. He was one of the most accomplished scholars of Wu, a reasonably good tactician, and a shockingly good diplomat. He was also a complete asshole, one whose obnoxious behavior verged on criminal insubordination. He might have been one of the most unpleasant people of the age, but also one of the greatest scholars.

on my 4th reread of this amazing book and I'm noticing how much Yu Fan cared from the start. All the beautiful descriptions of Chen jingshen like his smile looking like snow on a spring day and him looking unfazed but handsome in the classroom, all those are Yu Fans own thoughts. He was into him even when he believed himself to be straight, even while he looked at Chen Jingshen with disgust his inner thoughts were still soft for him.

He even cared about his own image infront of Chen jingshen like I'm reading where Chen jingshen starts giving Wang Luan lessons loudly to make Yu Fan maybe pick up some basics and Yu Fan knows he looks tired and disheveled and feels self conscious only because he knows Chen Jingshen is looking at him. This little burnt marshmallow..... Chen jingshen got so lucky.
