I'm just gonna rant here because some comments I saw while looking for a solution with an issue with a program gave me such a visceral reaction... I have to dump my thoughts somewhere. Big rant under the cut...
So I really want to get into video editing, on my pc not mobile. And I really don't wanna use Adobe shit, and there's A LOT of "free programs" around but most lately use a lot of AI or try to push it down our throats... and I don't want those. So the best one, that everyone keeps saying, is Davinci Resolve. And it's free!
But there's a big big problem... one that I keep seeing over and over in programs and websites lately: there's only a dark mode available. No light mode or even not as dark one....
I know the arguments of "it's better for your eyes" or "it's better for energy usage" or shit like that but.... it's not true for everyone.
To me, dark mode is HELL. I cannot read in it. I physically can't. I searched about it in the past, and apparently, if you have astigmatism, there's a high chance that dark mode is absolute hell for you. Here's some sources for it one and two.
But basically, if you put white on a black background for me... it gives me the most horrible eye strain and if I keep at it for more than 1 min, it starts giving me a terrible migraine, it's not a joke. I have to stop looking at it fast or it's horrible. I also get the afterimage of the white text on my eyes for like 20min after, and I cannot focus my eyes properly after reading on dark mode for like 5min. It's very bad.
So, am I saying "dark mode should not be a thing at all!" no. That's not it, ever. I never will say that because I know some people with photophobia or other conditions have the worst time with light mode, probably with symptoms close to mine with dark mode.
What I'm asking for is THE OPTION to have them. Just let me use the one I want!! Give me both!! Let the user chose the one they're more comfortable with! I understand with actual small projeccts that it might be hard to implement (although not as hard as actual features that do more than just the aesthetic). But for big programs and companies??? That monetize it?? or that has A LOT of users... it should be a must :/ or AT LEAST give us the option to change the colour to whatever the heck we want with html codes, if you don't wanna spend time making it look "nice" in light theme. Because if someone wants their editing software to be bubblegum pink, it should be ok too and no one should judge it.
Actually, if anyone has this problem when it comes to websites, I've been using quite often the extension called "Dark background and light text". As you can tell from the name, it's actually made to help make websites into dark mode. BUT it's so well built it can be used for the opposite!!! And only for certain websites and not all of your internet, so if you find a website that only has the option for the theme you can't use, you can just invert the colours ✨ Just with a button, and it stops hurting your eyes ✨ (is it perfect? No, some stuff looks a bit iffy. BUT it allows me to use the website!!) And if you want to personalize it properly for a particular website, you can also do that! Change the colours with html! So useful! So bad it's not for programs installed in your pc :C
But with all that into account, going back to the DaVinci Resolve issue, which was what made me so viscerally mad....
I was looking at the forums and reddit to check if there was any news of a light mode being added, or a way to change the ui manually... even if it was a user made one!!! It's fine if people make it instead of the developers, sometimes it's the option I have.
But what I stumbled upon was.... people shitting in the light mode.... and its users.... Even when it was asked in official ask posts "would you like if there was an option for light theme alongsite the dark one?"... a lot of people said NO. WHY, you are not losing your dark theme??? You're just making it more accessible for people who can't use dark theme???? But the answer was "NO" from a lot of people.
And as I looked more... specially in the threads in the forum asking for light mode... there was people explaining like I did earlier, about eyestrain, about how it's hard to see, about problems with vision. The answers that kept being repeated? "If you have eye problems you shouldn't be in video editing", "maybe you have to accept this isn't for you" and, my personal favourite /s "For colour gradding it's best to have dark theme so you see the colours better, it's known that other themes make it harder/worse".
Wow.... this last one is.............. Let's just.... imagine for a second........ that I have to do colour gradding as a light mode user! Which is only A PART of video editing. And I just oh, can't see properly in light mode!!! Wow, I can just, go to settings, change it to dark mode, do the colour adjustments as I need to in dark. I CAN EVEN TURN OFF THE LIGHTS ON MY ROOM, WOW, SUCH INNOVATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And then, when I'm done, I can go to options and turn light mode back on!!! WOW, SUCH A HARD PROCESS, no one could come up with this idea!! I might even... turn on the lights in my room!!! BACK ON AGAIN, after that process!! WOW, I am such a genious!!! RIGHT? You're welcome for this amazing insight and idea for you!!!
But then, if I have to do the cutting, the audio synch, the organization of scenes, transitions, etc etc etc. ANYTHING that's not important to have exact colour accuracy for, I can do it in light mode! NO PROB, IF YOU GIVE ME THE OPTION TO.
But no, just because they can use dark mode, that most people do use it in the industry, and that it's better for one part of the process... then EVERYONE has to use dark mode or "you're not fit for this, find something else to do", "accept you're not fit for this".
Just.... how are people so entitled to themselves? Such egoists.... Is this considered ableism too? I guess it would be, right? Idk, it's like if you said to wheelchair users/limited mobility people that "if you're not fit to walk well and go up stairs, you shouldn't go around town and visit places. You should just find suitable activities for you instead. Why should we build ramps and elevators everywhere for you?" slkfhaskf Am I overreaching? IT FEELS LIKE THAT MAN.
Anyway... I think that's most of my rant... I just... I had to get this out of my chest... Not tagging or shit because it's not that I want to get into discourse or anything. I just.... pls, understand that not everyone is the same, and just because something is not needed/important for you (or you highly prefer one option), doesn't mean there isn't people who need/is important for them the other option.... JUST OFFER BOTH.
Thanks for reading, if anyone did.... I guess....
