NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown!!!

NOAAS Ron Brown is a research vessel and the largest ship in the NOAA fleet. She's the namesake of Ronald H. Brown (1941-1996) who was the first African American to serve as Secretary of Commerce.

Design Notes:

Coat - I gave all of the Thomas G. Thompson class ships* the same ridiculously long coat. The four slits are based on the shape of the freeing ports (the holes at the front of the ship to let water out, i think thats what theyre called):

*RV Thomas G. Thompson, RV Roger Revelle, RV Atlantis, and NOAAS Ronald H. Brown. Ron Brown is the only one of the four who is not part of UNOLS.

Headpiece thing - The hexagonal bits are common to all of the Thomas G. Thompson class ships, based on the shape of the bridge. The "crown" is based on Ron Brown’s yellow mast(s). All NOAA ships use this color for their masts and follow the same overall color scheme.

Outfit - Her tie and vest are inspired by the NOAA flag:

Haven't fully thought out her personality and relationships but overall she's pretty nontalkative. A tired loser secretary when she's not out at sea. Friends with NOAAS Okeanos Explorer, "friends" with RV Thomas G. Thompson. She doesn’t personally know the UNOLS vessels (other than Thompson) but overall has a slightly negative impression of the lot.

the R/V Atlantis is a research vessel operated by WHOI. she is the current tender ship for the Alvin submersible. i started drawing this to celebrate her big return home after four years, but today she departs once again so i guess its a farewell drawing now

i got to see her IRL! my beautiful wife <333 (neil is also there i guess)

her gear is based on those exoskeletons used for lifting heavy things without breaking your back (Atlantis’ heavy duty A-frame is specially designed to lift the 45000 pound Alvin)

NAUTILUS !!!!! <333

Tilly, aka EV Nautilus and Atlantis' streamer crush. She mainly does seafloor mapping and deep sea exploration using ROVs. You might know her from those youtube videos of scientists getting excited over weird sea creatures (example).

EV Nautilus is a research vessel owned and operated by Ocean Exploration Trust (OET). OET was founded by Robert Ballard, who discovered a whole lot of stuff at the bottom of the ocean, most notably the wreck of the RMS Titanic and the existence of hydrothermal vents. His birthday was actually a few days ago on June 30th! Even at 84 he's still the lead scientist onboard the current expedition. Absolute legend.

OET focuses heavily on science communication/education so they livestream their expeditions and do outreach programs. EV Nautilus has special telepresence systems and a live production studio on board to facilitate broadcasting and live ship-to-shore interactions.

Design Notes:

Jacket - The stripes are based on the (old) EV Nautilus merch that Robert Ballard is wearing in a lot of his photos:

Headset - Gamer headset because she's a streamer lol. The "antenna" are modeled after the main mast.

Satellite Dome - Basically every research vessel has one, but I wanted to feature it on Tilly's design because it felt more relevant for her character.

Leg Warmers - The spiky bits are a reference to the Nautilus submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is what the EV Nautilus is named after.

Personality - Basically if you combined a streamer with a grade-school teacher. Very friendly, likes to talk, good with kids.

Hobbies - She likes singing and playing guitar! This is a reference to the songwriter Jim Salestrom (1956-2023), who joined the 2014 OET expedition and wrote an album, Nautilus, about the ship. His music is free to download on his website (link).
