I feel Azulon pairing Ozai with Michi but it not working out makes sense than Azulon just waiting for Ozai to be in his mid twenties to marry Ursa first.
Still you know damn well Ozai was like a deer headlights the moment he had to raise a kid as a teen. I feel as a teen he was less cruel, but you know he would have no idea what to do with a baby. Granted most fourteen year old boys would probably react the same.
Given that Iroh is the Crown Prince yet is an infamous womanizer and had Lu Ten extremely late in life at an old age similar to Azulon and Sozin. I doubt Azulon was rushing or worrying about marrying his children especially if he betrothed them early on in their childhood. Maybe, Michi had an older sister that was married to Iroh and became Lu Ten mother? So as a result Ozai became close to Michi and he was betrothed to her as well. Ozai is certainly more of a glory obsessed anti-social warrior prince than his older brother Iroh. So Ozai is very much asexual in his disposition generally despite being straight. Teenage Ozai is basically a glory-hound warmonger that wants to impress his older brother Iroh and father Azulon to an extraordinary, extravagant, and outrageous degrees. So his mind is less focused on girls than battles. However, Ozai has the utmost respect and honor for the Female Yuyan Archers and their competence, effectiveness, efficiency professionalism, and dedication to Fire Nation Royal Family and their military. Michi also became a member of their group and was an excellent markswoman. Unfortunately, Michi and Ozai marriage in their late teens and early twenties ended in divorce due to multiple miscarries with some of the Fire Sage deeming her to be cursed to her lack of fertility.
My headcanon is that a Teenage Ozai (15) met Kid Ursa (5) during his Young Fire Prince Avatar Hunting years. Ursa was forced to become a temporary ward of the Royal Family because her parents were not paying the Imperial Government enough taxes. Obviously, they don’t have a romantic relationship during that period. Basically, Ozai has become a glorified royal babysitter for Ursa. I am obsessed with Teen Ozai meeting a Kid Ursa and being significantly different from each other due to their different personalities and backgrounds. Ozai is colder, ruthless, and vicious because of his imperial upbringing by Azulon. Whereas Ursa is more happy, carefree, and more innocent because of being a young girl loved and cared for by her parents, Rina and Jinzuk. Whereas, Ozai was resented and neglected by Azulon due to his wife and Ozai’s mother Fire Lady Ilah’s death in childbirth. Even Iroh hated baby and child Ozai for quite a time until his teenage years. Ursa gives Ozai a glimpse of what his life and personality could have been if he wasn’t royalty and was loved by his father if his mother survived her death in childbirth.
Ursa was basically the Ciri to Ozai’s Geralt during her time as his ward under his protection. Ursa going to the Caldera Capitol and receiving a blood test is the reason why the Fire Sages found out about her being Avatar Roku’s granddaughter and basically convincing Fire Lord Azulon to secretly betroth Ozai & Ursa until they come of age to re-add Fire Avatar blood to the Fire Lord’s blood since the time of Avatar Szeto thousands of years ago! Azulon saw the marriage of Ozai and Ursa as destined by fate and of course the births of Zuko and Azula as well!
