Commandobunker Zandvoorde
Restored in 1987, this German bunker in Zandvoorde Belgium was used as the headquarters for the Division Zandvoorde. A specially trained unit, the 3rd Company of Armierungsbataillone (armament battalion) Number 27, built the bunker in 1916. The unit’s inscribed plaque can still be seen on the outside of the structure.
In 1916 the Front Lines were 5 to 6 kilometers northwest of this location and this bunker was situated on the division’s most important supply route.
Six interior chambers include:
- Sentry watch post - Sentry accommodation room - Two staff officer work rooms - Two staff officer accommodation rooms
It’s a very well kept site, surrounded by Belgian farmland and across the street from what appears to be a lumberyard. I had the place to myself the entire time I was there.
